by Herb Kane April 23th, 2003
(Out of 4 stars) "The Right Stuff" is a movie about the courage of seven men aiming for the skies to be one of the first Americans to step foot in space. We also see Chuck Yeager (Sam Shepard) flying a bullet-shaped Bell X-1 rocket plane (October 14, 1947) to be the first man to break the sound barrier in a flight over the Mojave Desert. Later the race is on to put a man in space and we see how seven pilots go through endless testing to prove their emotional and physical capabilities for the job - which oftentimes is laced with humor during tense times. Their wives don't exactly take on their passion. One backyard barbecue scene displays how the pilots love flying and the wives are distressed by the high accident rate (a one in four chance of dying). I especially like the brave attitudes of the pilots - like when they confront the designers to make a porthole in the spacecraft so they could see. They made the designers feel like monkeys, which at the time many would have preferred to use on flights instead of humans. Roger Ebert said in his review, "Seen now in the shadow of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, 'The Right Stuff' is a grim reminder of the cost of sending humans into space."

CHANGES IN U.S. PATENT POLICY AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
My name is Roger May. I am an Assistant General Counsel at Ford Motor Company and I have worldwide responsibility for Ford's intellectual property matters.
I have come here today to voice Ford's support for changes made in U.S. patent policy through the GATT implementing legislation. Specifically, the patent term changes provided much needed stability and predictability in our patent system.
As you well know, Ford is an international organization conducting business in many countries in fact, more than 200. Ford employs more than 330,000 people worldwide, including 180,000 in the United States with manufacturing facilities in 14 different states.
Ford is a technology-driven company employing over 17,000 scientists and engineers in the U.S. alone. Ford's success in its core business - automotive - is based to a very great extent upon our ability to find new ways to make building and driving our vehicles easier on the world around us, from researching alternative fuels and reducing waste from our plants, to using recycled materials in the cars and trucks we produce. In fact, Ford is a leader in the production of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), with more different types of AFVs on the road than any other automaker. Together, methanol, ethanol, electric, natural gas and propane offer the potential for reduced tailpipe emissions and increased energy security in the United States.

Nearly 200 students walked across the platform in front of an audience of about 2000 on Sunday, May 18, and returned to their seats as bona fide holders of college degrees. Speaker Bill McKibben, author and environmental activist, warned of global degradation and urged the graduates to make ecologically healthy choices. When decisions must be made, he said, “Ask the right set of questions, not if this is the cheapest way to do something, but is it the best for the revivification of the planet.”
Senior speaker Nick Cowdrey (pictured above) expressed his gratitude for what he has gained at LSC and thanked the faculty for “never loosing sight of your purpose here—to give us an education. But you have done much more than that. You have cared about us and become our friends.”
Elizabeth “Betty” Hatch, who graduated from Lyndon Normal School in 1940, received enthusiastic cheers from the graduates when she rose to accept the Distinguished Alumni Award from Alumni Association president Katie Sanderell Gadapee.

The names of interviewees who have participated in more than one of these projects are repeated on this list to highlight this fact. Names of those with multiple interviews done by the same project are repeated when terms of access to their various interviews vary. Otherwise, the name of an interviewee is listed once even though he or she may have given more than one interview. Interviews which have been completed and accessioned into the Library's collection are followed by an alphabetical symbol in parentheses describing their status and terms of access. Those interviews without a symbol are in various stages of processing and therefore are not yet available for research unless specifically authorized by the interviewee.

Roger Morris. "A Tyrant 40 Years in the Making," New York Times, 14 March 2003
Seattle March 14, 2003 On the brink of war, both supporters and critics of United States policy on Iraq agree on the origins, at least, of the haunted relations that have brought us to this pass: America's dealings with Saddam Hussein, justifiable or not, began some two decades ago with its shadowy, expedient support of his regime in the Iraq-Iran war of the 1980's. Both sides are mistaken. Washington's policy traces an even longer, more shrouded and fateful history. Forty years ago, the Central Intelligence Agency, under President John F. Kennedy, conducted its own regime change in Baghdad, carried out in collaboration with Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi leader seen as a grave threat in 1963 was Abdel Karim Kassem, a general who five years earlier had deposed the Western-allied Iraqi monarchy. Washington's role in the coup went unreported at the time and has been little noted since. America's anti-Kassem intrigue has been widely substantiated, however, in disclosures by the Senate Committee on Intelligence and in the work of journalists and historians like David Wise, an authority on the C.I.A. From 1958 to 1960, despite Kassem's harsh repression, the Eisenhower administration abided him as a counter to Washington's Arab nemesis of the era, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt much as Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush would aid Saddam Hussein in the 1980's against the common foe of Iran. By 1961, the Kassem regime had grown more assertive. Seeking new arms rivaling Israel's arsenal, threatening Western oil interests, resuming his country's old quarrel with Kuwait, talking openly of challenging the dominance of America in the Middle East all steps Saddam Hussein was to repeat in some form Kassem was regarded by Washington as a dangerous leader who must be removed.
