Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
(a) Any wars etc.
(b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
(c) Major discoveries of the time
(d) How did this mathematician change history etc.

Bogolyubow, Gnedenko y Sobolev

Nina Karlovna Bari
November 19, 1901 - July 15, 1961
Written by Giota Soublis, Class of 1998 (Agnes Scott College)
Nina Karlovna Bari was a woman whose contribution to mathematics was great. She lived in a period when mathematics started to become more and more popular in Russia. She gained the respect from all mathematicians of her time not only because of her work but also because of her excellent personality. Bari was considered to be the principal leader of mathematics at Moscow State University. She helped many students earn their Ph.D. and improve their theses. She did everything she could to give to others the spirit of her work. Besides mathematics, Bari had other interests too. She used to hike and be a tourist and she really liked poetry and music. Her death on July 15, 1961 was a lost to all mathematicians. She was a special person and even now is known and remembered for her marvelous work.

I would like to elaborate a bit on the (apparent) strangeness
(experienced by Bill) of the statement
    (1) "CH holds for closed sets".
I'm far from being an expert on these matters and hope that those
aficionados of descriptive set theory (or even "set theoretic real
analysis") may have more to say.
CH asserts that the cardinal card (IR) is the cardinal NEXT to card
(IN). Formulated in this way, it is not obvious how to connect CH with
statements like (1). However, CH can be stated in many different ways,
the easiest being the following: (2) For every subset X of IR, CH (X), where It became well known (after Cohen's work) that one cannot prove CH (X) for EVERY set X of real numbers on the base of the traditional axioms of set theory (ZFC). However, long before that many mathematicians

    MOSCOW ADVENTURES, 1988-89
Sergei and I shared an adventure one snowy Sunday evening in Moscow. After stopping at a restaurant (apparently run by the Academy of Sciences for its members-I never understood these things) for a snack and a beer, we entered the Metro and were stopped by a militsioner (police officer) Looking back on it, I realize the consequences could have been unpleasant. I'm not sure just what I'm officially allowed to do (this is still the Soviet era). My Frostline jacket and galoshes mark me as the obvious foreigner. The accusation, however, was against Sergei, who was told he was drunk (which was decidedly not true). With my American instincts, I thought humility would be in order when dealing with the Russian police. Sergei, the native Muscovite, knew better. He grew indignant and told the policeman that his colleague Dr. Cooke from America, could vouch for his sobriety. In my bookish Russian, which always amused my Russian colleagues, as if someone you met on the street spoke like Nicholas Nickleby, I said, " "

Restoration of the Russian Academy of Sciences In 1991, in connection with the changes that occurred in the political, social and economic situation in the  country, including the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the formation of the Russian Federation, the Academy received a new status in 1991 and was given back its old name: the Russian Academy of Sciences. [Decree of the President of Russian Federation of December 2, 1991]. Academician Yuri S. Osipov was elected President of the Academy.
The scientists of the Academy made great contributions to the development of practically all directions of modern science. Developing the traditions of national scientific schools, the researchers of the Academy enriched many areas of theoretical and applied mathematics. Studies of Ivan M. Vinogradov and his school into the theory of numbers, as well as research into the theory of functions carried out by the school of Nikolai N. Luzin gained wide international recognition. New approaches were proposed in the theory of differential equations and functional analysis, in the theory of probabilities, algebra, topology, mathematical logic, and in the mathematical theory of optimal control (Andrei N. Kolmogorov, Sergei L. Sobolev, Ivan G. Petrovsky, Lev S. Pontryagin, Anatoly I. Maltsev, and others). Substantial contributions to the development of applied mathematics were made by Mikhail A. Lavrentyev, Mstislav V.Keldysh, and others. A number of problems related to mathematical applications in mechanics, economics, physics and technology were successfully solved.
