    Using Reverse Polish (Postfix) Notation
    by Stephen R. Schmitt
    Introduction
Several conventions exist for the evaluation of arithmetic expressions. The rules of algebra have been used for centuries and is familiar to most everyone. In the 1920's, Jan Lukasiewicz developed a formal logic system which allowed mathematical expressions to be specified without parentheses by placing the operators before (prefix notation) or after (postfix notation) the operands. Prefix notation is known as Polish Notation after the nationality of Lukasiewicz. Similarly, postfix notation is known as Reverse Polish Notation (RPN). In algebra, or infix notation, operators appears between operands: In prefix notation, operators precede operands: In postfix notation operators follow operands: RPN is easily implemented in a computer since it can be performed using a data structure called a stack. In a stack, objects are added to the top and removed from the top. This is sometimes called last-in, first-out or LIFO. As a postfix expression is read from left to right, operands are placed on top of the stack. Operators are applied to the operands at the top of the stack.
    RPN algorithm
A stack-based algorithm for evaluation of postfix expressions is:
  • Get a token (operator or operand) from the input text.

Jan Lukasiewicz [ ] was one of the mid-twentieth century's many luminescently creative middle-European mathematicians. This "Postfix Notation Mini-Lecture" [ ] explains some of his relevance to the theory of computing languages. "PN" in this context can mean either "Postfix ..." or "Polish ..." It's possible that Knuth and HP, in different ways, had hands in popularizing the "Polish ..." reading. See also Parsing Polish notation Updated 31 Jan 2004, 19:00 GMT Lukasiewicz Revisions

    Polish notation
The term you selected is being presented by searchCIO.com, a TechTarget site for CIO professionals. Polish notation, also known as prefix notation, is a symbolic logic invented by Polish mathematician Jan Lukasiewicz in the 1920's. When using Polish notation, the instruction (operation) precedes the data (operands). In Polish notation, the order (and only the order) of operations and operands determines the result, making parentheses unnecessary. The notation for the expression 3(4 +5) could be expressed as x 3 + 4 5 This contrasts with the traditional algebraic methodology for performing mathematical operations, the Order of Operations. (The mnemonic device for remembering the Order of Operations is "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" - parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction). In the expression 3(4+5), you would work inside the parentheses first to add four plus five and then multiply the result by three. In the early days of the calculator , the end-user had to write down the results of their intermediate steps when using the algebraic Order of Operations. Not only did this slow things down, it provided an opportunity for the end-user to make errors and sometimes defeated the purpose of using a calculating machine. In the 1960's, engineers at

First Announcement and Call for Papers
The year 1996 marks the 40th anniversary of the death of one of this
century's foremost logicians and historians of logic, Jan Lukasiewicz. In
this year the Joint Session of the Aristotelian Society and the Mind
Association will be held in Dublin, where Lukasiewicz spent his last years,
and we intend to use this occasion to celebrate the work of Lukasiewicz at a conference on 8-10 July 1996 in University College Dublin, immediately after the Joint Session. The conference is being organised by the Department of Philosophy UCD, and the European Society for Analytic Philosophy. The programme will consist of plenary lectures by a number of invited speakers and workshops consisting of papers of 30-40 minutes duration.
