A THREAD OF YEARS
John Lukacs
490 pp. 6 1/8 x 9 1/4
Cloth ISBN 0-300-07188-4
The distinguished historian John Lukacs has been described as "one of the most powerful as well as one of the most learned minds [of the] century" by Conor Cruise O'Brien and as "one of the most original and profound of contemporary thinkers" by Paul Fussell. Here Lukacs presents a series of fictionalized vignettes of daily life as experienced by ordinary individuals in the United States (although Lukacs takes us to some European countries as well), each in a year from 1901 to 1969, and each followed by a short dialogue in which the author argues with an interlocutor (who may or may not be himself) over why he has chosen to develop a given scenario in that particular year and what its significance might be. The period represents the life of a single man, K., which Lukacs weaves in and out of the text and through which can be traced the leitmotif of the book: the decline of Anglo-American civilization and of the ideal of the gentleman. The book is primarily a work in the history of manners and mores, a delightful-and poignant-succession of sketches that brings the reader into the inner and often undeclared life of individuals and places them in the larger dramas of historical process in this century. "I have read this book with unflagging interest and pleasure. Original in form and substance, it is history as it might be lived and again as it might form the subject of conversationsolid food for thoughtful minds."Jacques Barzum

Multidimensional Statistical Analysis and Theory of Random Matrices
Proceedings of the Sixth Eugene Lukacs Symposium Editors: A.K. Gupta and V.L. Girko This volume contains the papers from the Sixth Eugene Lukacs Symposium on ``Multidimensional Statistical Analysis and Random Matrices'', which was held at the Bowling Green State University, Ohio, USA, 2930 March 1996. Multidimensional statistical analysis and random matrices have been the topics of great research. The papers presented in this volume discuss many varied aspects of this all-encompassing topic. In particular, topics covered include generalized statistical analysis, elliptically contoured distribution, covariance structure analysis, metric scaling, detection of outliers, density approximation, and circulant and band random matrices. This volume will be of great value and interest to researchers in the above fields. 1996; xii+386 pages

Professor
Eugene Lunn, since 1970 professor in the Davis Department of History, died on March 14, 1990 at the age of 48, after having long and courageously suffered from cancer. He is survived by his wife, Donna Reed, who holds a position as Lecturer in the Department of Comparative Literature at Davis, and by the children of his marriage to her, Benjamin and Rebecca, as well as by his daughter Rachel, born of his previous marriage to Myra Glasser. His death is a grievous loss to his many friends, colleagues, and students, as well as to the historical profession, which he deeply loved and to which he made scholarly contributions of great value. Professor Lunn was born on September 24, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of George and Edith Maslow Lunn. In 1962 he graduated from Brandeis University and in 1968 he received the Ph.D. degree from Berkeley. After teaching two years at Reed College, he joined the Davis faculty as a modern European intellectual and cultural historian. Even though NoiseFactory is based in the UK, most prices here are quoted in US dollars - the slightly longer shipping time is usually more than made up for by considerably lower prices in America. Buying goods online is just as easy in dollars as Sterling, because credit card transactions are automatically converted to local currency at the prevailing exchange rate. In fact, online dollar purchases are cheaper even than getting your bank to generate a money order, because banks typically charge extortionate conversion fees, whereas credit cards usually charge none at all. To buy a book or CD in dollars, just fill out the online forms provided - the rest happens automatically. Further Reading History of Mathematics > (page 4 of 25)

O’NEILL IN HUNGARY: A LETTER January 9, 1977 Dear Professor Wilkins: At the MLA Annual Convention held in New York on December 26-29, I read the Preview Issue of The Eugene O’Neill Newsletter . I am delighted with the plan to establish a Newsletter in which O’Neillians “of academe” and “of the proscenium” will have a chance to exchange their views on an American dramatist of international standing. Since O’Neill’s dramatic scope is truly universal, it is little wonder that O’Neill scholarship also has an international character. There is a great deal of interest in O’Neill in Hungary, too. His greatest plays ( The Emperor Jones Desire Under the Elms Mourning Becomes Electra The Iceman Cometh Long Day’s Journey Into Night A Moon for the Misbegotten A Touch of the Poet , and More Stately Mansions ) have been translated into Hungarian. Among the one-act plays, the early

A WEALTH OF RICHES AND A CHALLENGE: A REVIEW [Because of its great importance to all personal and library collections of O'Neilliana, Eugene O'Neill: A World View , ed. Virginia Floyd (New York: Ungar, 1979, ix + 309 pp., $14.50), deserves to be reviewed "up front" and at length, and not be relegated to a brief mention in the "Reviews and Abstracts" section. Hence the autonomy and placement of the following review-article by Professor Paul Voelker. Ed.] The newest collection of essays on Eugene O'Neill and his plays, Eugene O'Neill: A World View , edited by Professor Virginia Floyd of Bryant College, will be welcomed by all dedicated O'Neillians. The collection is a most positive contribution to O'Neill studies. It is to be hoped, however, that the book will reach a larger audience, for this collection is much more than the sum of its parts. It is, indeed, a challenge to the American cultural establishment to give O'Neill and his drama their due and to give both the American theatre they deserve. The volume contains nineteen contributions, divided into three sections, each comprehensively introduced by the editor. The first of the three, entitled "A European Perspective," is itself worth the price of the volume. It is here that the cultural challenge is most strongly madeexplicitly in Floyd's introduction and in an essay by Timo Tiusanen of Finland, and implicitly by the other eight essays. One thing immediately clear is the geographical breadth of O'Neill's appeal. Here we have contributions from Sweden, Finland, England, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, and the Soviet Union. (At that, one must regret that there are no contributions from the Orient; perhaps this exclusively Western world view can be expanded in later editions.)
