Sam Loyd
Samuel Loyd January 31 April 10 ) was an American puzzle author and recreational mathematician Loyd claimed to have invented the famous fifteen puzzle . He also authored a number of chess problems , often with witty themes of solutions. Following his death, his book Cyclopedia of Puzzles was published ( One of his best known chess problems is the following. White is to move and mate black in five moves against any defence: Loyd bet a friend of his that he could not pick a piece that didn't give mate in the main line, and when it was published in it was with the stipulation that white mates with "the least likely piece or pawn". Loyd called the problem "Excelsior" after the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow . The solution can be found by clicking on the above diagram.

Very rare first edition, privately printed, of the catalogue of the library of Lord Overstone, in a fine association copy: the library of Lockinge, the estate given by Overstone to his daughter and sole heir. Lord Overstone's library was purchased in large part from the estate of John Ramsay McCulloch in 1864. McCulloch, who had founded the libraries of the House of Commons and the Board of Trade, was an ardent and enthusiatic collector, as indeed was Overstone. They were firm friends and had collaborated over Overstone's project to reprint scarce economic works, later known as the 'Overstone Tracts'. The Overstone Library, c. 8000 printed volumes, was subsequently bequeathed to the University College Reading by Overstone's daughter, Harriet (1837-1920). Harriet had married Lt. Col. Robert James Lindsay in 1858, on his return from distinguished military service in the Crimea (he won the Victoria Cross). He took her name, becoming Loyd Lindsay, and they moved to Berkshire where they had been given the Lockinge estate near Wantage by Lord Overstone himself. Lindsay was created Baron Wantage in 1885.

Lasker - Loyd - Liga

Review(s) AN OUTSTANDING IMPROVISER Samuel Loyd (born Philadelphia 1841, died Elizabeth 1911) was the founder of the modern thematic chess problem. His extraordinary talent came to light very early. Already in 1856, a year after he began composing, Loyd astonished the chess world with numerous thematic discoveries, involving the doubling, regrouping and interference of pieces, line vacation, and unstalemating of the black king. Irrespective of the genre, Loyd's problems are characterised by difficult introductory play, clever and original combinations, and, as a rule, light construction. Preface

Loyd, Sam - Britannica.com Loyd Biography Loyd 2 Mover 10 Loyd Chess Problems from Greekchess.com. Loyd Bio in French. Sam Loyd Homepage Focuses on Loyd's mathematical contributions. Sam Loyd earned worldwide renown through the development of puzzles, including chess problems. Loyd was born in Philadelphia in 1841, the youngest of 8 siblings. He began playing chess regularly in 1855, and over the next two years made his entry into problem creation with a splash. As a 16 year old, Loyd served with Paul Morphy as a contributor to Chess Monthly Loyd held a variety of jobs in his life: plumbing contractor, owner of a chain of music stores and newspaper columnist. He was also a magician and ventriloquist, and a friend of P.T. Barnum, the famous showman. However, his talent was displayed through the creation of puzzles, earning him the nickname "The Puzzle King". Loyd developed the game known as Parcheesi, which became an international fad. Another example of his work was the famous 14-15 puzzle, in which the solver must rearrange numbered tiles inside a box frame. While none of Loyd's chess problems ever created an international fad or made him a lot of money, they are recognized by knowledgeable observers as the work of a genius. Perhaps his signature traits were the injection of humor into problems, and his tremendous imagination. Loyd anticipated problem themes that would first become popular 50 or more years later.
