Rimangono, così, 13 pesci piccoli e soltanto 3 pesci grossi.

Surprising discovery in known Loyd's #3
In 2001 there was organized international match Slovakia-Ukraina in 4 sections. In #3 section there was set theme: change of set model mates in #3. My enthusiastic colleague Daniel Novomesky searched a bit among known older problems and he has made a shocking discovery - if we turn the solution of Loyd's castling tanagra #3 into set play, we get another correct threemover, with analogous set play, try and solution. Just watch the things in motion... A bit unfortunately, the judge of the competition put his problem to the last "Slovak" place, thus it was free and quickly published.
(A few weeks later...)
As it was partially expected, this discovery was too shocking to be real... and it was indeed fortunate for Slovakia not having Daniel's problem placed higher. What happened? I recently received an e-mail from Michael Lipton, one of leading orthodox miniature experts. He writes: "Novomesky's version is anticipated. It was published first by A. J. Taffs, American Chess Bulletin 1960, alongside Loyd's original New York Albion 1857 ... The twins are in Colin Russ's miniature collection, no. 369. ... Note also there is a lovely Shinkman 3er (no. 240 in Russ) that can be twinned to all these by Zeroposition ... Also an old 3er by J. Hane (publication?) that is not on a par with the above fine problems, but really just a cute trick - but another relation."

Samuel Ussery and Nancy Stokes Hurt Samuel Ussery, Jr. was born ca. 1780-1785 in Lunenburg Co., VA and died bef 1835 in San Augustine, TX. He was the son of Samuel Ussery and the grandson of John and Mary Ussery . On Feb. 11, 1801, he married Nancy Mary Stokes Hurt in Lunenburg Co., VA. She was born between 1779 and 1786 in Lunenburg Co., VA and died after 1841. Samuel and Nancy traveled quite a bit before settling in Texas. From Lunenburg they went to Clairborne Co., MS (ca 1824), then to Louisiana, possibly in Winn Parish or Natchidosis Parish, then settling in Texas. Michael Ussery, a descendant, believes Samuel and Nancy brought their family from Chicot Co., Ark to Texas around 1832. They settled in what is known as "the redlands", in far East Texas. The family had land near San Augustin, which is on the Camino Real "The Royal Road" - that went from Florida, through Louisiana, to San Antonio, TX. This area was known as being a very "rough" area to live in, and they were not referring to the land. Many of the early leaders of Texas, including Gen. Sam Houston, leader of the Texas revolutionary army, lived there at the same time. ( Info provided by Michael Ussery ussery@airmail.net)

Great American Composers
December 30, 2001
Today we bring you two chess problems by America's greatest composers. Both problems have something important in common. You must solve at least one to achieve the day six goal.
Samuel Loyd William Anthony Shinkman
Samuel Loyd

New York Albion 1857
White to play and mate in three moves
Sam Loyd's biographer, A.C.White, calls this "one of the world's most famous problems". Loyd, who published the problem before he had turned 16, referred to it as "a neat little position". You will need a tiny bit of lateral thinking in order to solve it.
This is a beautiful, almost architectual position. Another great composer, Werner Speckmann, mused that "one might think the the rules of the present-day game of chess had been especially invented to produce this problem". Unfortunately a second solution (or "cook") was later found. But for once this does not seem to have destroyed immortality of the problem.

The Steinitz Gambit
Last week's "Excelsior" problem struck a chord with many visitors. We were asked by some to display another famous Samuel Loyd problem: the "Steinitz Gambit". As in the Excelsior, here, too, Loyd composed the problem mainly for the purpose of creating the most preposterous and incredible solution imaginable. Here is the position he came up with.
Samuel Loyd, Checkmate ( 1st prize) 1903
Mate in three moves Once again, dear visitor, you are invited to study the position and decide:
which is the absolutely worst move white can make?
That is the solution of the problem! The solution is given here. If you are interested in story of how the problem was originally composed and why it came to be know as the "Steinitz Gambit" you will find that here.
