Seine Schulzeit absolvierte er in seiner Geburtsstadt, bis er 1870 für ein Studium der Mathematik und Physik an die Universität Leiden ging. Im Februar 1872 nahm er die Lehrtätigkeit am Abendgymnasium in Arnheim auf und bildete sich autodidaktisch weiter, so dass er 1875 promovieren konnte. Auf Grundlage der Maxwell -Theorie erklärte er in seiner Dissertation " Sur la théorie de la réflexion et de la réfraction de la lumière " die Brechung und Reflexion des Lichtes. Nachdem er 1877 eine Professur auf den mathematischen Lehrstuhl in Utrecht ablehnte nahm er 1878 einen Ruf auf den ersten niederländischen Lehrstuhl für theoretische Physik an der Universität Leiden an. 1892 gab er eine erste Erklärung des Michelsonschen Versuches durch die Lorentz-Kontraktion. Encyclopedia Entry for Hendrik Lorentz Dictionary Definition of Hendrik Lorentz Hendrik Antoon Lorentz July 18 Arnhem February 4 Haarlem ) the winner of the 1902 Nobel Prize for his work on electromagnetic radiation Lorentz attended primary school in Arnhem until he was 13 years of age when he entered the new High School there. He entered the University of Leiden in 1870 but, in 1872, he returned to Arnhem to take up teaching evening classes. He worked for his doctorate while holding the teaching post. In his doctoral thesis for University of Leiden (1875), Lorentz refined the electromagnetic theory of James Clerk Maxwell to better explain the reflection and refraction of light. He was appointed professor of mathematical physics at the Univiersity of Leiden in 1878. During his time there he was primarily interested in a single theory to explain the relationship of electricity, magnetism, and light. Lorentz theorized that the atoms might consist of charged particles and suggested that the oscillations of these charged particles were the source of light. This was experimentally proven in 1896 by Pieter Zeeman , a pupil of Lorentz.

Spacetime Lorentz Transformation Lorentz Transformation This transformation derives its name, of course, from Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1853-1928), a Dutch physicist. Unlike the Galilean transformation, the Lorentz transformation involves a change of spatial distance and a change of time interval between two inertial systems. For a simple case where the new coordinate system is moving with constant velocity v along the x-axis of the old coordinate system , the transformation is as in the figure, where y' = y and z' = z. In general, the Lorentz transformation allows a change of the origin of a coordinate system, a rotation around the origin, a reversal of spatial or temporal direction, and a uniform movement along a spatial axis. If a physical law remains the same under the Lorentz transformation, it is called "Lorentz invariant". The Lorentz transformation will result in a stationary observer recording an effect equivalent to the Lorentz contraction when observing an object in uniform motion relative to his system of coordinates. Einstein showed, however, that this effect is due not to the actual deformation of the body in question, as Lorentz had originally supposed, but to a change in the way space and time are measured.
