Ph 10 Geschichte Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (1853 - 1928) niederländischer Physiker und Mathematiker dar. Hendrik Antoon Lorentz wurde am 13. Juli 1853 in Arnheim geboren. Seine Schulzeit absolvierte er in seiner Geburtsstadt, bis er 1870 für ein Studium der Mathematik und Physik an die Universität Leiden ging. Im Februar 1872 nahm er die Lehrtätigkeit am Abendgymnasium in Arnheim auf und bildete sich autodidaktisch weiter, so dass er 1875 promovieren konnte. Auf Grundlage der Maxwell-Theorie erklärte er in seiner Dissertation " Sur la théorie de la réflexion et de la réfraction de la lumière " die Brechung und Reflexion des Lichtes. Nachdem er 1877 eine Professur auf den mathematischen Lehrstuhl in Utrecht ablehnte nahm er 1878 einen Ruf auf den ersten niederländischen Lehrstuhl für theoretische Physik an der Universität Leiden an. Im Jahr 1892 formuliert Hendrik Antoon Lorentz eine modellhafte Theorie der Leitfähigkeit und der magnetischen Eigenschaften von Metallen, welche von der Existenz beweglicher negativer Ladungsträger in den Metallen ausgeht. Sie wird später als Elektronentheorie bezeichnet. 1895 führt er die nach ihm benannte Lorentz-Kraft ein.

Feb. 4, 1928, Haarlem), Dutch physicist and joint winner (with Pieter Zeeman) of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1902 for his theory of electromagnetic radiation, which, confirmed by findings of Zeeman, gave rise to Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity. Lorentz was appointed professor of mathematical physics at Leiden University in 1878. In his doctoral thesis (1875) he refined the electromagnetic theory of James C. Maxwell of England so that it more satisfactorily explained the reflection and refraction of light. Although his work in physics was wide in scope, his central aim was to construct a single theory to explain the relationship of electricity, magnetism, and light. Although, according to Maxwell's theory, electromagnetic radiation is produced by the oscillation of electric charges, the charges that produce light were unknown. Lorentz later theorized that the atoms of matter might also consist of charged particles and suggested that the oscillations of these charged particles inside the atom were the source of light. If this were true, then a strong magnetic field ought to have an effect on the oscillations and therefore on the wavelength of the light thus produced. In 1896 Zeeman, a pupil of Lorentz , demonstrated this phenomenon, known as the Zeeman effect, and in 1902 they were awarded the Nobel Prize for their efforts.

Hendrik Antoon Lorentz.- físico matemático holandés, y último gran representante de la física clásica y precursor de la nueva, reunía a la lúcida lógica del matemático virtuoso la aguda intuición que le permitía ver escondidas realidades en los símbolos de las teorías. Profundidad y claridad a la vez distinguen las ideas de este eminente innovador. Profesor a los veinticinco años de la Universidad de Leyden, en Holanda, se convirtió, durante los dos primeros decenios del siglo, en inspirador-guía de toda una generación de investigadores. Nació en Arnhem, Holanda (Países Bajos), el 18 de julio de 1853. Hijo de Gerrit Frederik Lorentz propietario de una guardería infantil y su esposa Geertruida van Ginkef. Cuando él contaba con cuatro años de edad, su madre murió, y en 1862 su padre se volvió a casar con Luberta Hupkes. En aquellos años, la enseñanza que se impartía a los niños y jóvenes era bastante rigurosa y sacrificada, ya que los horarios de clases muchas veces se extendían hasta el anochecer (se aplicaba en algún sentido el método de Dalton) y, fue bajo ese régimen de estudios, que Hendrik Antoon Lorentz adquirió los conocimientos de la enseñanza básica. Por ello, cuando en 1866 se inauguró el primer establecimiento de enseñanza media (H.B.S) en Arnhem, Lorentz, como alumno talentoso que era, ingresó a ese establecimiento de inmediato al tercer año. Al finalizar su quinto año de estudios medios y de haber recibido durante un año formación sobre los clásicos, se incorporó a la Universidad de Leyden en 1870, donde obtuvo su licenciatura en matemáticas y física, recibiendo el correspondiente título en el año 1871.
