April 21, 1997 The Theory of
Riemann Integration
Through the work on calculus, particularly integration, and its application throughout the century was formidable, there was no actual ``theory'' for it. The applications of calculus to problems of physics, i.e. partial differential equations, and the fledgling ideas of function representation by trigonometric series required clarification of just what a function was. Correspondingly, this challenged the notion that an integral is just an antiderivative. Let's trace this development of the integral as a rough and ready way to solve problems of physics to a full-fledged theory. Leonhard Euler (1707-1783) and Jean d'Alembert (1717-1783) argue in 1730-1750's over the ``type'' of solutions that should be admitted as solutions to the wave equation D'Alembert showed that a solution must have the form For t =0 we have the initial shape f x Note: Here a function is just that. The new notation and designation are fixed. But just what kinds of functions f can be admitted?

Olga Taussky-Todd was a distinguished and prolific mathematician who wrote about 300 papers. Throughout her life she received many honors and distinctions, most notably the Cross of Honor, the highest recognition of contributions given by her native Austria . Olga's best-known and most influential work was in the field of matrix theory, though she also made important contributions to number theory.

Furtwängler ’s Advisor: C. Felix (Christian) Klein Ph.D. Universität Bonn
Felix Klein is best known for his work in non- euclidean geometry, for his work on the connections between geometry and group theory, and for results in function theory. However Klein considered his work in function theory to be the summit of his work in mathematics. He owed some of his greatest successes to his development of Riemann's ideas and to the intimate alliance he forged between the later and the conception of invariant theory, of number theory and algebra, of group theory, and of multidimensional geometry and the theory of differential equations, especially in his own fields, elliptic modular functions and automorphic functions. Klein’s Advisor 1: Julius Plücker Ph.D.

Lifshitz and the Vilna Goans There are a number of Lipshitz (etc) families appearing in book "Eliyahu's Branches, the Descendants of the Vilna Gaon and His Family" (published by Avotaynu). Treina Vilner, daughter of Shlomo-Zalmen Vilner( the son of Eliyahu Goan of Vilna) and Rikhel Kissin was born c 1776 in Vilna, Lithuania. She married Tsvi Hersh Lipshitz. The Lipshitz, Grad, Segal, Olkenitsky, Helman, Gurwicz and Kushilevky families are descended from this branch. Shlomo-Zalmen's brother Avraham, b 1765 married Sarah Mindes Lipshitz, daughter of Noakh "Mindes" Lipshitz and Minda Pesseles., Chaim Freedman Petah Tikvah, Israel email: chaimjan@zahav.net.il Lifshitz and fashion Ralph Lauren changed his name from Ralph Lipschitz Lifshitz equation Rudolf Otto Sigismund Lipschitz born nr Konigsberg, Germany 14 May 1832 died Bonn, Germany 1903 Lipschitz carried out many important and fruitful investigations in number theory, in the theory of Bessel functions and of Fourier series, in ordinary and partial differential equations, and in analytical mechanics and potential theory. Of special note are his extensive investigations concerning n-dimensional differential forms and related questions of the calculus of variations, geometry, and mechanics. This work in which he drew upon the developments that Riemann had presented in his famous lecture on the basic hypotheses underlying geometry contributed to the creation of a new branch of mathematics.
