Courtesy Collège de France Jacques Louis Lions Jacques Louis Lions was born on May, 3, 1928, in the city of Grasse, in southern France. He died on May, 17, 2001 in Paris. He was buried in Grasse, his all time home town. To the official administrative world, he will be remembered as the founder of the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique INRIA [2] born from IRIA in 1980, and that he shaped for the next 20 years although he remained its President for only four years (19801984), the President of the CNES French space agency (1984-1992), the President of countless scientific bodies, including the French Académie des Sciences (1997-1999) and the scientific board of the Office National de la Météorologie, and the inspirer of many more initiatives. He was made Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur, an extremely high distinction. But to his co-workers and friends, he will be much more remembered as a man of great vision and wisdom, always available when you would need his advice, with a solid sense of humour even in serious situations and a great care for individuals. He was such a nice personality that his charm would operate on everybody around him, from clerks to angered union leaders, who would feel that they had really been listened to and taken seriously. This man, who accomplished more in any time span than several of us together, never seemed to be in a hurry. One should also notice his keen interest for international cooperations with less developed countries. He is also quoted as the first French mathematician (together with Laurent Schwartz) to get in touch with the Italian mathematical community after World War 2, a typical instance, together with his very strong involvement in the Global Change program including its political aspects, of his active, though always modest, concern for peace and friendship in this world.

LIONS D'OR Pierre-Louis Ginannerini Lions d'or 1998 La presse se fait l'écho de notre manifestation La République des pyrénées le 25 mai 1998 Un homme de passion Homme de culture et de passion, Pierre Louis Giannerini a reçu le Lion d’Or 98. On a mis plus particulièrement en relief son éternel combat pour la liberté d’expression. C’est en présence de nombreux invités et amis dont Bertrand Loustalot-Forest, conseiller général du canton d’Oloron-Est que Pierre-Louis Giannerini a reçu des mains de Maître Fabre, président du Lions Club d’Oloron, la superbe récompense de cette association. Un Lion d’Or amplement mérité comme en témoigne le parcours de Pierre-Louis Giannerini. Maître Fabre devait en tracer les grandes lignes, mettre aussi en exergue l’importance que devait revêtir une telle distinction. « Après Louis Haure pour le festival, Martine Boyé, championne toutes catégories du sport oloronais et Philippe Bézier, représentant le fleuron de l’industrie locale » précisera le président du Lions, « nous récompensons un homme de culture ». Il ne manqua pas d’énumérer les nombreuses créations de ce professeur d’histoire tout en soulignant son talent d’écrivain. Pierre-Louis Giannerini se déclara heureux de recevoir cette récompense. « Cela me fait très plaisir » ajouta-t-il. « J’espère que mon action en sera confortée. » Il devait également rendre hommage à tous ceux qui ont participé avec lui à la création de nombreuses associations. Faisant référence à la défense du patrimoine, il ne manqua pas de dire que souvent il s’est trouvé en opposition, à l’image de la lutte actuellement menée pour la survie au quartier Sainte-Croix des platanes de la place Saint Pierre.

X-Passion n°11 Maths App Pierre-Louis LIONS Pierre-Louis Lions, normalien, chercheur en mathématiques appliquées, est professeur à l'Université Paris-Dauphine (où il dirige le Ceremade) et à l'Ecole Polytechnique. Il a reçu en juillet dernier la Médaille Fields. Un autre Français, Jean-Christophe Yoccoz, a également été primé. De quand date votre décision de faire de la recherche ? De la fin des classes préparatoires. J'étais à Louis-Le-Grand, et je savais que -sauf accident- j'aurais le choix entre l'Ecole Normale et Polytechnique. Mon choix d'aller à Ulm correspondait à une volonté affichée de faire de la recherche, et à la curiosité d'"aller plus loin". Comment avez-vous choisi de faire des mathématiques appliquées ? Y a-t-il un lien entre vos travaux et ceux de votre père ? Pourriez-vous dresser un panorama de la recherche en mathématiques? C'est mission impossible. Il y a un accord quasi-unanime pour dire que les maths sont dans une période d'expansion, d'explosion: il y a des nouveaux sujets mathématiques dans tous les sens. Les maths apparaissent bien sûr dans la physique mais aussi dans la chimie théorique, l'économie...C'est en effet un outil indispensable à la quantification de toute science. En même temps, en mathématiques "théoriques", on s'aperçoit que de grandes synthèses s'opèrent, synthèses qui ont d'ailleurs parfois leur origine en physique. Ceci permet d'élucider la structure des liens qui unissent diverses théories mathématiques. C'est donc une matière vivante, en évolution permanente, dont le panorama est impossible à dresser.
