All of the "German" universities of the day are described. Along with Dr. L. von Bortkiewicz, Lexis describes the Royal Prussian Friederich-Wilhelm University on pp. 313-335. Most of Simmel's career, and this goes for the Department, Dilthey taught 2 hour classes on Tuesday and Thursday morning as the senior professor. Simmel did the late afternoon (maybe 3-5 or 4-6) lectures on the same day. Year on Year, Dilthey and Simmel switched topics between 'The history and development of philosophy' and 'Aspects of modern philsophy' (Both had previously done major works on Kant and Schopenhauer and, I think, were of like mind on 'modern- Fin de Siecle' philosophy). ==Geschichte== Die Universität Dorpat war zwischen 1802 und 1898 nicht nur deutschsprachig; sie war auch intellektuell und hinsichtlich des Lehrkörpers eine deutsche Universität (von den 30 deutschsprachigen Universitäten um 1875, von denen 23 im [[Reich]] lagen, war Dorpat die elftgrößte; über 50% der Professoren waren "Reichsdeutsche", weitere 40% [[Balten]](deutsche)), administrativ und finanziell aber natürlich russisch. In der Lehre bereitete die Universität nicht nur den gesamtbaltischen Adel (in Estland und Kurland gab es keine Universität) und die Bildungsbürgerschaft beruflich vor, sondern auch - und aus der Sicht des Staates vor allem - Staatsdiener und Ärzte für das gesamte Russische Kaiserreich. Wissenschaftlich war die Universität Dorpat, die etwa zwischen 1860 und 1880 ihr "Goldenes Zeitalter" erlebte, international. Die Universoität Jurjev existierte bis 1918, als sie für einen Teil des Wintersemesters unter deutscher Besatzung als Dorpat wiedereröffnete. 1919 wurde sie im gerade entstandenen Staat [[Estland]] unter dem estnischen Namen Tartu als Nationaluniversität ereröffnet und blieb dies bis 1940. 1940 eroberte die Sovietarmee Estland, 1941-1944 war es von den Deutschen besetzt. Seit 1944 besteht die Universität Tartu dann ununterbrochen, wobei sie 1940-1941 und 1944-1989 den Namen "Staatsuniversität Tartu" trug. Die volle wiedererlangte akademische Unabhängigkeit kann man auf das Jahr 1992 datieren, obwohl seit 1988 ungestörte Forschung wieder möglich war.

Monday, May 31, 2004 Money, Method, and the Market Process Ludwig von Mises The Great German Inflation I All the misfortunes from which Europe has suffered in the last two decades have been the inevitable result of the application of the theories which have dominated the social and economic philosophy of the last fifty years. Our troubles are the upshot of much laborious thought. The German inflation, above all, was the outcome of the monetary and banking theory which for many years had obsessed the men who occupied the chairs of economics at the Universities, the men who governed the financial policy of the Reich, and the editors of the most influential newspaper and periodicals. The central feature of these erroneous theories was a total rejection of the Quantity Theory and of all the teachings of the Currency School. The empirisch-realistische Volkswirt who distrusted every "theory"—especially theories imported from abroad—was firmly convinced that both the Quantity Theory and the Theories of the Currency School were nothing but an inexplicable blunder committed by Ricardo and his followers. The German Kathedersozialisten did not waste their time on the study of English political economy. Hence they were unaware of the problems which were the subject of the long-lasting controversy between the Banking School and the Currency School. The only source of their knowledge of the matter was the book published in 1862 by Adolph Wagner under the title
