An explanatory note for the draft Resolution of Verkhovna Rada, On the Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the First Edition of the Holy Bible in the Ukrainian Language, reads: “The publication of the Holy Bible in the Ukrainian language facilitated the spiritual development of the Ukrainian people, its literary language, and stimulated translations.” On October 31, the Kyiv public celebrated the publication of the first Ukrainian canonical translation of the Holy Bible, by Panteleymon Kulish and Ivan Puliuy, at a special soiree. THE FIRST UKRAINIAN VERSION: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Ukraine has long-standing traditions of book publishing. Ivan Fedorov [one of the earliest known Slavic book printers] found refuge and favorable working conditions in Ukraine. In 1568-70, he printed Uchytelne Yevanheliye [The Instructive Evangel], a collection of instructions based on biblical texts in Church Slavonic, at the estate of the Ukrainian magnate Hryhory Hodkevych. In 1589, in Ostroh, he printed the New Testament for home and school use, and shortly afterward put out 1,500 copies of the so-called Bible of Ostroh, the first complete Slavonic version of the Scriptures (in Russia, a similar edition appeared only in 1663). At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Ivan Fedorov’s effort was continued by Ostroh Academy graduate Demyan Nalyvaiko, printing works by Fathers of the Church simultaneously in Slavonic and colloquial Ukrainian. Church brotherhoods paid serious attention to educational projects, particularly translations of the Scriptures into the mother tongue. Metropolitan Petro Mohyla’s circle, in particular, prepared for publication an Old Ukrainian version of the Bible.

We welcome you to the Press Center of the Administration of the President of Ukraine at the first press conference of the Head of state this year. L.KUCHMA: - Ladies and gentlemen, I am glad to meet you again and greet you in this hall. A little more than a month passed since our last meeting. I understand that a lot of important events have taken place in our country's political and economic life. The important thing is that the year is over now, and we can sum up its results. Some state events, in the first place, international, have taken place, and I would like to dwell on them and draw your attention to them. In the first place, the CIS informal summit was held. It is evaluated in different ways. Just like my colleagues in the CIS - presidents - I believe that it was a very important step, taking into consideration the fact that the possibilities of the CIS are not use to full extent. And if everybody agreed that we should go over from political problems, that were considered and included in the CIS agenda, to economic issues it would be a positive phenomenon on the post-Soviet territory. For my part I understand that today I will be asked such questions. I want to stress, Ukraine uses only 10% of possibilities of general market of the CIS countries. Please, tell me who benefits from it? Maybe somebody will once more say Russia or Kazakhstan benefits from it? We have no right - neither political, nor economic to lose such possibilities. We cannot go back, because niches of this market are taken very quickly by other developed countries that see Russia as a great economic market.

In Memoriam Dmytro Basalyk , a longtime member of the UMA. Mr. Basalyk came to America as a post-World War II refugee where he became an entrepreneur with a stand at the historic West Side Market and an activist in Cleveland's Ukrainian community. Dr. Volodymyr Bodnar was a long-time member of the UMA and an active member of Cleveland's Ukrainian community. He visited the Museum two or three times a week to read and research the many articles he wrote to the Ukrainian-American press. He often wrote about events at the UMA and contributed copies of his books to the UMA Library. Dr. Bodnar was also a prominent singer and frequently appeared in concerts and stage productions. He was a man of great charm and accomplishment and will be missed. Mykola Hirniak was a longtime member of the UMA and a lifelong patron of Ukrainian Culture. As owner of a prominent package export company, he was well known in Greater Cleveland's Ukrainian community for his assistance to others and his generosity. Mrs. K. Kupchak

A total of 288 delegates were registered and 267 - 104 from Ontario, 75 from Manitoba, 36 from Alberta, 35 from Saskatchewan, 13 from Quebec and four from British Columbia - attended. This was a major improvement over the 1995 congress when only 177 - just two over the number necessary for a quorum participated. Included among the 267 were 31 youth delegates (aged 16-25). The 19th triennial congress of the UCC, held in Winnipeg Oct. 9 - 12 under the theme of "Hromada - Uniting Vision and Reality" also witnessed some historic constitutional changes, including the elimination of the "veto" previously held by the "Big Five" organizations - the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada, the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League, the Ukrainian National Federation, the League of Ukrainian Canadians and the Ukrainian Professional and Business Federation of Canada (now joined by a sixth - the Council of Ukrainian Credit Unions of Canada).
