Sysyn Over twenty years ago, Omeljan Pritsak presented his plan to translate sixty volumes of Ukrainian historical texts to his colleagues at the Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute. As with many projects of that visionary organizer of scholarship, some more modest part of his plan has been fulfilled. Six volumes of translations of medieval and early modern texts have already appeared in the excellent Harvard Library of Early Ukrainian Literature. Modern Ukrainian history has not been as fortunate, despite the increasing interest in Ukraine and teaching of courses in the field. The anthology will serve those who wish to gain a general view of Ukrainian intellectual life and those who teach Ukrainian and East European intellectual history. Although one may regret that the editors did not provide a bibliography of other texts available in English translation, they have already done much to make modern Ukrainian intellectual history accessible to the English-language reader.

Gold from the Carpathian Mountains The first Ukrainian gold nugget was produced in the town of Muzhiyeve, Zakarpattya Oblast on September 30, 1999. The specialized factory in a small western Ukrainian town in the Carpathian Mountains made the 5 kilogram (5.721 kilo to be precise) nugget after work of extracting gold-containing ore had begun at the gold deposit earlier this year. It was known that there were deposits of gold and silver in the Carpathian Mountains way back in the Soviet times but for some reasons these deposits were not used. It was only this year that a factory was built at a gold deposit. It will produce about a ton of gold annually. Free Economic Zone in Odesa Porto-Franco free economic zone was unveiled in the Odesa Sea Port on September 7, 1999. In the next three years no taxes at all will be collected in the Porto Franco zone, and in the following three years taxes will be paid but they will be halved. In fact, Odesa was a free economic zone in the years 1819-1858. During that time the foreign trade turnover increased more than sixfold and Odesa became the biggest port in the south of the Russian Empire. Promotion of Investments into the Economy of the Donetsk Oblast Several investment- and culture-promotion events were held in the city of Donetsk in early September. At one of the events, attended by the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, the new coat-of-arms and banner of the Donetsk Oblast were presented to local authorities. Mykola Bilyashivsky (1867-1926) was a notable figure in Ukrainian culture of the end of the nineteenth and first quarter of the twentieth century. He was one of those who promoted the creation of museums in Ukraine. Being a man of a very wide erudition, he contributed a lot to archaeology, ethnography, numismatics and museum management studies. Mykola Bilyashivsky was born into a family of a long genealogy. Among all the Bilyashivskys his own contribution to Ukrainian culture was the greatest. His parents were descendants of several generations of the clergy. Upon graduation from a prestigious Kyiv school, he went to study law at St Volodymyr University. But he was inclined more to learn archaeology. At the end of the eighties, he started writing articles for one of Kyiv newspapers, Kyivska Starovyna (“Kyiv Antiques”). It was then that he decided he would devote himself to promoting Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian national identity. When still a student, he took part in archaeological excavations of an ancient site in the vicinity of the town of Kaniv.

Over 350 people attended the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Calgary Branch-organized unveiling of the monument, located along Memorial Drive, between the north and south bound Edmonton Trail bridges. The locations is a green area between the two bridges, the trees of which symbolize Canada's dead soldiers in World War I. It has a lot of foot traffic. In 1933 a Genocidal Famine raged through Soviet Ukraine. This resulted in the death of between 7 to 11 million people. This genocide was instigated by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin whose main goal was to break the spirit of the Ukrainian farmer/peasant and to force them into collectivization. The famine was also used as an effective tool to break the renaissance of Ukrainian culture.

Related Materials Ukrainians in World War II Military Formations: An Overview by Peter J. Potichnyj There is a great deal of confusion about the behaviour of Ukrainians during 1939-45, and it is not limited to non-Ukrainians. Forty years after World War II, some Ukrainians are themselves unclear on issues that affected them four decades ago and have influenced their thinking to this day. The common view of the war is that of an enormous struggle between the forces of good and evil, in which the former triumphed. It follows from this view that the nations and individuals who were not on the side of the Allies (except, of course, for the neutral countries) must have been on the side of the Axis powers or, worse still, on the side of the Nazis. Whatever does not fit this neat pattern is either overlooked or misunderstood, and so it has been with the present debate over collaboration and war criminality among Ukrainians. During World War II Ukrainians collaborated with all sides, for two main reasons. First, as one of the world's largest national groups without a sovereign state, Ukrainians did not control their destiny at a crucial time in world history. Second, not unlike Jews, Ukrainians were - and still are - scattered throughout the world; thus in 1939-45 they could be found in all kinds of places and situations. Since the war's fiercest battles were on Ukrainian territory, it is not surprising that Ukrainians fought in various armies and military formations, in large numbers and on all fronts. In the Soviet army alone were 4.5 million citizens of Ukraine. According to Soviet statistics, 409,668 Ukrainians were awarded medals for bravery in the war; 961 became heroes of the Soviet Union; and 60 per cent of the 250,000-strong Soviet partisan force in Ukraine was Ukrainian.

EX-LIBRIS AND MEDICINE Petro Nesterenko (Kyiv, Ukraine) It should be noted that the interest to medical ex-libris as it is evidenced by the presented bibliography of editions in these themes, has not subsided from the beginning of our century. What was it, that interested the arists of all times engaged in this field. A classical symbol if medicine, a snake twining a cup or Aesculapius` staff., is the most frequent motif. The motifs of the end of the last century and our early century represented the studies of medical scientists, laboratories, chemist`s shops. Sometimes there occur the pictures of roentgenograms and cardiograms, a scalpel, human organs: a heart, kindneys, marrow. The ex-libris heroes are patients and physicians operating or examining their patients, nurses, sets of instruments, drug plants, etc. There are a lot of motifs representing a philosophic dialogue between a man and a scull in his hand. Some artists apply to Greek mythology. Thus, Estonian artist Lembit Lichmus has engrared in wood a picture when Achilles, a hero of the Trojan War, ties up Patrocles. A picture of Saint Apollonia, a patron of dantists, rather frequently occurs in Italian and German ex-librists. Sometimes the miniature is decorated with a concrete portrait as, for example, in the ex-libris of the Institute of Pathology of Special Medicine at Padua University. That is the portait of Bernardino Ramozzini (1633—1714), an Italian scientist. One can see a picture of a raw-bone with a scythe disputing with Aesculapius in the ex-libris of Hanse Schaffer, a German, artist, who has placed them on the balance.

If keeping to the chronology of development of Ukrainian medicine in the statement of philatelistic material one should first of all mention the postage-stamp of Ukraine of 1993 devoted to Agapit (? — 1095), one of the prominent healers of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. Before issueing the stamp (the First day of postmark 15.01.1994) the Ministry of Communications made a souvenir booklet. Yuriy Drogobych (1450—1494) was the first known Doctor of Medicine, the Ukrainian, Professor of medicine and astronomy, Rector of Bologna University, Professor of medical faculty of Kharkiv University. One can find his sculptural portrait (sculpturer Theodosia Bryzh) on the post age envelope of the USSR of 1990. The 500th anniversary of the scientist`s death was honoured by the memorial portrait (Drogobych, 04.02.1984). Danylo Samoilovych (1744—1805), a prominent epidemiologist, medical officer, organizer of medical sanitary service in Russian Empire, the author of the fundamental work about plague, a member of twelve foreign Academies. The 250th anniversary of his birth was honoured in his homeland by the memorial postmark (Chernigiv, 22.12.1994).

Yet proceedings were started against Toronto resident Wasyl Odynsky even though the government hadn't even bothered to charge him with any war crimes. The delegation noted that in the recent ruling on the Odynsky case, Justice Andrew MacKay found that: "Mr. Odynsky did not voluntarily join the SS auxiliary forces, or voluntarily serve with them at Trawniki or Poniatowa, or later with the Battalion Streibel"; "There was no evidence of any incident in which he was involved that could be considered as directed wrongfully at any other individual, whether a forced labourer-prisoner, or any other person"; "No evidence was presented of any wrongdoing by Mr. Odynsky since he came to Canada, now more than 50 years ago." The delegation said that what the UCC is asking is that in all cases where there is no evidence of any war crimes, no proceedings should be started, and in all cases where the judge has ruled that there was no evidence of any war crime, all further actions against the respondent should be terminated immediately.
