    Iamblichus Isocrates Leucippus
The originator of the atomic theory was a contemporary of Socrates. His birthplace was variously reported as Elea, Miletus, and Abdera, but these are more likely associations based on his philosophical interests rather than accurate reports. The fact is little is known about his life. Two works are often attributed to him: The Great World System or ( MEGAS DIAKOSMOS ) and On Mind . It is probably piontless to try to distinguish his contributions to atomism from those of his pupil Democritus , but there is little question that the fundamental outlines of the theory were his invention.

    Leucippus and Democritus: atomist philosophers
1 October 2001 Scribes: Lukas Tagalakis and Jamieson Hunter These minutes were spoken on 3 October; for another version, go to the unspoken minutes Monday's lecture concentrated on the teachings of the early atomist philosophers Leucippus and Democritus. These philosophers, both from Abdera, are often mentioned together. Leucippus is believed to be the originator of Atomist thought, which Democritus, with much ambition, expanded and carried through in detail. Epicurus, a contemporary of Democritus, further expanded the atomic theory into a complex system. There exists one or two pieces of evidence that Epicuras denied that Leucippus even existed. However scholars, including professor Hutchinson, have enough evidence to suggest that he did exist and that he was crucial in the development of the atomic theory. Professor Hutchinson described these attacks by Epicurus as polemical in nature. A student asked what the word polemical meant and professor Hutchinson said that it is derived from the Greek word polemos

    ANAXAGORUS AND LEUCIPPUS
Anaxagorus was the first philosopher to visit Athens. Burnett described him as a Persian soldier from Klazomenai, a Greek city that had been conquered by the Persians. He was a teacher of Pericles, and a student of the school of Anaximenes. He was banished from Athens for saying that the sun was a red hot stone and that the moon was like earth. Anaxagorus began by trying to explain the world in a Milesian sense while respecting the conclusions of Parmenides. Empedokles had taught that everything in the world was made from four basic elements. Anaxagorus denied this possibility. He said that there was a little of everything in everything. Or else how could hair be made of what is not hair unless hair was part of it. All things are together, was the way he put it, and everything however small or great had an equal number of portions of the opposites. Matter is infinitely indivisible. No matter how small you may divide anything it still had the same number of opposites. However, everything gives the appearance of that which is most in it. Therefore air is that which has in it most cold, fire has in it most heat, and so on. LEUCIPPUS Of all of the followers of Parmenides by far the boldest was Leucippus who challenged the basic thesis of the masters philosophy, that what is not cannot be. When Pythagorus developed his theory of the one and the many, the many were separated by the void, or what is not. Parmenides rejected this idea. Leucippus revived it. Following the lead of Parmenides, Leucippus argued that what is must be one, but it is a plenum, he said, a plenum filled with an infinite number of bodies each of which meets all of the requirements of the one but are separated from all others by the void. These he called atoms. They were infinitely hard and indivisible, they came in a myriad shapes and sizes, and everything that exists is made up of them. This idea was further developed by Democritus and we will discuss him later because he was a contemporary of Plato, and like him a student of Socrates.

Legien, Carl (1861-1920) German labor leader. Chairman of the German Federation of Trade Unions and editor of their journal. Leibnitz, Gottfried Wilhelm (1646-1716) German mathematician (co-inventor of Calculus, modern mathematical logic), physicist (law of conservaion of energy), geologist, etc., etc. Initially a mechanical materialist in philosophy, but in opposition to Locke's empiricism, moved to a position of rationalism and objective idealism with his theory of Monads - the indivisible, spiritual substances of which the Universe is composed; the monads were endowed with self-activity, but had no physical influence on one another; held that the criterion of truth is clarity of knowledge, tested by the application of Aristotle's Formal Logic. See Hegel's analysis and on Law of Sufficient Ground Leibniz is most renowned as co-founder of the calculus with Newton (Newton and Leibniz each invented different systems of notations for calculus independently; there was an intensely competitive relation between the two men who would set each other mathematical puzzles to see whose calculus was superior, and Newton faked the date of publication of the second edition of the Principia to claim priority) and founder of mathematical and symbolic logic. Leibniz also did important work in mechanics, geology, biology, history, linguistics and engineering. He was prominent in the public affairs of his day, putting a scheme for the unification of the German states, which had been the legacy of the Thirty Years War, to the Imperial Diet, argued for the reunification of the Protestant and Catholic Churches, founded the Academy of Sciences under Frederick I of Prussia, and participated in every sphere of science, art and public life in the Europe of the Habsburgs and Louis XIV.
