John Blow (1649-1708): A Voluntary for the Cornett Stop Total time 61:04 If you haven't heard these Concertos before – don't hesitate! Composed between 1742 and 1745 they are varied, tuneful, frequently contrapuntal, grand in the Handelian manner – and very baroque. Highly enjoyable and entertaining from start to finish. If you have heard them before, then you probably heard them in one of the versions for string orchestra – all six performed all on one sound and textural level as Six Concertos for Strings. The present recording takes a different approach. These concertos were entitled "For Strings and Continuo, or Keyboard and Continuo", and we took John Stanley at his word! In fact, when preparing the scores, conductor Leslie Jones found that some are more suited to Strings, some to Keyboard. In the end, conductor and producer settled on the following: two concertos as Organ with strings, two as Harpsichord with strings, and two for Strings, one with harpsichord continuo, the other with organ continuo.

Detail of Name Board
John HILLS was a pianoforte manufacturer in the Southwark (Obelisk; St George) and Kennington areas of London from around 1805 until his death in 1831. The business was then run by his wife, Ann HILLS nee AGG, with assistance from her eighteen year old son, William. He eventually took charge and ran the business until around 1845, when it closed. William (1813-1894) then took to teaching music, styling himself, in the manner of the day, 'Professor of Music', as did his older brother, great-great-grandfather John HILLS (1808-1870), who married his first cousin Caroline Haynes in 1846, following the death of his first wife.
We are keen to find descendants of William HILLS and Elizabeth CHERRY who was born c 1840. Children were : Margaret born c1865 [married Wardle], Noel c 1868, Frank c 1870, and Frederick Herbert "Bertie" HILLS 1873. Living members of this family were all in Essex in both the 1881 and 1901 censuses. William Hills died at Bishop's Stortford in 1894; his wife Elizabeth HILLS nee Cherry, one of the first female graduates from the University of London, was listed as a schoolmistress, living in Ilford, aged 61, in the 1901 census.
Also seeking descendants of John and Caroline HILLS son (William's nephew), John Leslie HILLS (born 26th September 1847) and his wife Edith Maria Tillson. Children were : William born c1870 [went to Canada], Jack c1873, Frank c1874, Lily HILLS c1878, Maud c1880 [married MAY] and Harry HILLS born after 1881.

From Sterne to Baldessari: The Illustration of Tristram Shandy
by Andrew Ellam , June 1999
The Visual Basis of Tristram Shandy
That the visual is important in Tristram Shandy has become a critical commonplace. Sterne’s interest in fine art has a convincing factual basis: ‘he was an amateur painter,… he used a painter’s vocabulary at times,… he knew Romney, Reynolds, and Gainsborough, and… he made passing reference to Hogarth’s Analysis of Beauty . But the relevance of visual representation to TS is greater than mere interest on Sterne’s part in the paintings and painters of his time; rather TS questions fundamentals of visual and linguistic representation. On the particular relevance of the visual to, and its thematic resonance with, TS , rests my choice to examine the images which have illustrated it from its first publication to the present day.

Significant Scots
John Leslie Bishop Leslie is generally allowed the praise of great learning and of high diplomatic abilities, though it is almost as generally regretted, that he did not turn them to a better use. His fidelity to a declining cause is also allowed, even by its enemies, to have been a sentiment as free from the dross of worldly or selfish views as the motives of a line of public conduct ever are. The isolation of a catholic church dignitary in society seems favourable to the develop. merit of such sentiments; and there are not many cases in which the principle is observed to have been more powerful than in the history of this Scottish prelate. His tongue, his pen, the travel of his body, his temporal fortune, were all devoted with the most generous unreserve to the cause which he thought that of justice and true religion; and what more can any man do, to show the superiority of his nature to the meaner passions? The works of bishop Leslie are as follow: 1. Defence of the honour of Mary Queen of Scotland; with a declaration of her right, title, and interest to the crown of England; Liege, 1571, 8vo, which was immediately suppressed. 2. Afihicti Animi Consolatiónes et Tranquilli Animi Conservatio; Paris, 1574. 3. De Origine, Moribus, et Rebus Gostis Scotorum: Romas, 1578, 4to. 4.

~~~~Market Trend~~~~
The market is still hot due the lack of listings. The number of listings under $1.0 mil is miserable, less than 25 homes for sale in our area. The trade-up level of over $1.0 mil to $1.5 mil is still very thin. Yet, the lack of listings isn't the case over $1.5 mil to $3.0 million. A glut would be a good description. These high-end properties have now leaped passed the great bubble days of 2000. This phenomenon is pulling up all the whole market. When will it stop? Who knows? We are on another crazy Silicon Valley ride. Let's all not miss it this time!
Significant Scots
John Leslie LESLIE, JOHN, bishop of Clogher, was born at Balquhain, in the north of Scotland, after the middle of the sixteenth century. He was of an ancient and highly respectable family. The earlier part of his education he received at Aberdeen, the latter part at Oxford. He afterwards travelled into Spain, Italy, Germany, and France, and acquired such a proficiency in the languages of all these countries, excepting the last, that he spoke them with the fluency of a native. In the Latin language he particularly excelled, and was so familiar with it, that it was said of him in Spain, when he resided there, Solus Lesleius Latine loquitur. He remained on this occasion twenty-two years abroad, and, during that time was present at the siege of Rochelle. He also accompanied the duke of Buckingham on the expedition to the isle of Rhee. Leslie stood high in favour with Charles I., and was by that monarch admitted a member of his privy council. In 1633 he was appointed to the bishopric of Raphoe, in Ireland, where he built a handsome palace. This building he afterwards held out against Cromwell, adopting the loyal alternative of enduring a siege rather than submit to the usurper.
