Algunos biógrafos dicen que Legendre nació en Toulouse y que se trasladó a París en su juventud. Legendre que pertenecía a una familia acomodada, recibió una buena educación en el Colegio Mazarino, también conocido como Colegio de las Cuatro Naciones, de París. El Colegio Mazarino debe su nombre al cardenal Giulio Mazarino (1602-1661), que aunque nació en Italia, fue primer ministro de Francia en la época de Luis XIV. Mazarino, junto con Richelieu, son los símbolos del absolutismo francés. Mazarino legó su capital para fundar un colegio dedicado a la enseñanza de alumnos de las cuatro provincias (de ahí su otro nombre) anexionadas por los tratados de Westfalia y de los Pirineos.
