His father, a native of Ireland , was the landlord of the London Coffee House on Ludgate Hill , "a man," on the testimony of those who knew him, "of fine culture, a profound Shakespearian, and a thorough gentleman." His mother was descended from the family of Richard Bentley . It was from his father that Leech inherited his skill with the pencil, which he began to use at a very early age. When he was only three, he was discovered by John Flaxman , who was visiting, seated on his mother's knee, drawing with much gravity. The sculptor admired his sketch, adding, "Do not let him be cramped with lessons in drawing; let his genius follow its own bent; he will astonish the world"advice which was followed. A mail-coach, done when he was six years old, is already full of surprising vigour and variety in its galloping horses. Leech was educated at Charterhouse School , where William Makepeace Thackeray , his lifelong friend, was a fellow pupil, and at sixteen he began to study for the medical profession at St Bartholomew's Hospital , where he won praise for the accuracy and beauty of his anatomical drawings. Neither of us thought you could match the first trip we took with you, but you managed to put us on more HUGE fish than we did the first trip. We kept track of our catches and determined we caught over 65 fish in two days weighing anywhere from 2 lb - 9 lbs. Still no 10 pounder, but I am sure we'll get another chance. Don't forget the 6 foot gar fish we had hooked - that was the biggest fish I have ever seen. The difficulty about this concept was that there weren't enough men to go round. The mortality rates for boys were far higher than for girls and men were more likley to emigrate than women. The consequence of the idea that women were essentialy wives and mothers was that they were regarded as altogether dependent on men, either as fathers or husbands. Wives wait for their husbands to finish drinking on pay night. S.C.Hall, The Trial of Sir Jasper from The Victorian City, Images and Realities , Dyos and Wolff (1973) At the oppostie end of the social scale prostitution provided the 'best' living for women. A girl on the streets could earn more in a night than a working man in a week. It was quite possible that she would be healthier too as she would be better fed and better housed. The down side was the danger of disease. The worst of the venereal diseases, syphilis, was incurable until the end of the nineteenth century. Then as now a certain number of women lived extremely well but for the most part prositution was apt to end in alcolholism and disease. 'O'melia, my dear, this does everything crown!
