John Leech, the son of a Coffee House proprietor, was born in London on 29th August, 1817. He was educated at Charterhouse and at the age of sixteen he went to St. Bartholomew's to study medicine. Leech's teachers should became aware of Leech's superb anatomical drawings and began commissioning him to paint portraits.
Leech left medical school and tried to make a living from drawing and painting. His first known published work was a pamphlet called Etchings and Sketchings (1835) and included drawings of street characters such as cabmen, policemen, street musicians, etc. For the next few years he produced a series of humourous pamphlets including the Comic Latin Grammar The Fiddle-Faddle Fashion Book and the Children of Mobility . Although influenced by the work of James Gillray and George Cruikshank , Leech's humour was as one critic pointed out "less grotesque, less boisterous, less exaggerated, nearer to the truth and to ordinary experience."

After graduating Leech was appointed to a post with Ferranti in Manchester where he worked on the construction of an early digital computer. In 1954 Leech left Ferranti to return to Cambridge, becoming a research student in the mathematical laboratory. He was appointed as a lecturer in the Computing Laboratory of Glasgow University in 1959. He spent the academic year 1967/68 as a research fellow at the Atlas Computer Laboratory near Harwell in England. In 1968 a new university was created in Stirling, 40 km from Glasgow. Leech was appointed as Reader and first Head of Computing Science at Stirling. Two years later he was promoted to a Personal Chair, the first awarded by the University of Stirling. He took early retirement in 1980, having worked part-time for a few years before this due to ill-health. Douglas Munn, writing in [2], describes Leech's mathematical work as follows:-

John Leech August 29 October 29 English caricaturist , was born in London His father, a native of Ireland , was the landlord of the London Coffee House on Ludgate Hill , "a man," on the testimony of those who knew him, "of fine culture, a profound Shakespearian, and a thorough gentleman." His mother was descended from the family of the famous Richard Bentley . It was from his father that Leech inherited his skill with the pencil, which he began to use at a very early age. When he was only three, he was discovered by Flaxman , who had called on his parents, seated on his mother's knee, drawing with much gravity. The sculptor pronounced his sketch to be wonderful, adding, "Do not let him be cramped with lessons in drawing; let his genius follow its own bent; he will astonish the world"an advice which was strictly followed. A mail-coach, done when he was six years old, is already full of surprising vigour and variety in its galloping horses. Leech was educated at Charterhouse , where Thackeray , his lifelong friend, was his schoolfellow, and at sixteen he began to study for the medical profession at St Bartholomew's Hospital , where he won praise for the accuracy and beauty of his anatomical drawings. He was then placed under a Mr Whittle, an eccentric practitioner, the original of "Rawkins" in

William John Leech was born in Dublin in 1881 and studied art at the Metropolitan School of Art and later transferred to the Royal Hibernian Academy Schools, where he studied under Walter Osborne . Leech's student works and early French pictures are dark in tone, and have little in common with the sunny late paintings of Osborne with which he would have been familiar. Leech's work seems to have been divided into large-scale, highly-finished exhibition pieces, and small personal sketches done direct from nature 'en plein air.' Increasingly, Leech became interested in sunlight and deep shadow, capturing the corner of a landscape or a garden, and the sensation of sunlight, with the random eye of a camera. Leech has several points in common with Roderick O'Conor . Both studied in Paris and Brittany, Leech arriving there just as the older artist was leaving, and in the early twentieth century both painted interiors, showing an interest in indoor and reflected light. Both shared a love of color and among Irish artists can be regarded as great 'colorists'. During his years in Brittany, Leech absorbed the influences of 'plenairism' and Impressionism, and his work shows various influences such as those of

John H Conway 's father was a chemistry laboratory assistant. John became interested in mathematics at a very early age and his mother recalled that he could recite the powers of two when aged four years. John's young years were difficult for he grew up in Britain at a time of wartime shortages. At primary school John was outstanding and he topped almost every class. Despite not having any clear idea of what mathematics was when he was at primary school, John Conway must have had it firmly fixed in his mind that he would become a mathematician. When he went to be interviewed at age eleven before entering secondary school he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up and he replied that he wanted to be a mathematician at Cambridge. He excelled at secondary school, not in all his subjects but certainly his performance in mathematics was by far the best of any of the pupils. Mathematics was not the only subject which interested him, however, for he also had spells of deep interest in astronomy and at other times in fossils. The interest in astronomy has remained with him and he lists it as one of his interests today. After leaving seconday school, Conway entered Gonville and Caius College Cambridge to study mathematics. He was awarded his BA in 1959 and began to undertake research in

http://13.1911encyclopedia.org/L/LE/LEECH_JOHN.htm
JOHN LEECH
LEECH, JOHN In 1862 Leech appealed to the public with a very successful exhibition of some of the most remarkable of his Punch drawings. These were enlarged by a mechanical process, and colored in oils by the artist himself, with the assistance and under the direction of his friend J. E. Millais. Leech was a singularly rapid and indefatigable worker. Dean Hole tells us, when he was his guest, I have known Mm send off from my house three finished drawings on the wood, designed, traced, and rectified, without much effort as it seemed, between breakfast and dinner. The best technical qualities of Leechs art, his unerring precision, his unfailing vivacity in the use of the line, are seen most clearly in the first sketches for his woodcuts, and in the more finished drawings made on tracing-paper from these first outlines, before the chiaroscuro was added and the designs were transcribed by the engraver. Turning to the mental qualities of his art, it would be a mistaken criticism which ranked him as a comic draughtsman. Like Hogarth he was a true humorist, a student of human life, though he observed humanity mainly in its whimsical aspects, Hitting all he saw with shafts With gentle satire, kin to charity, That harmed nut. The earnestness and gravity of moral purpose which is so constant a note in the work of Hogarth is indeed far less characteristic of Leech, but there are touches of pathos and of tragedy in such of the Punch designs as the Poor Mans Friend (1845), and General Fvrier turned Traitor (1855), and in The Queen of the Arena in the first volume of Once a Week, which are sufficient to prove that more solemn powers, for which his daily work afforded no scope, lay dormant in their artist. The purity and manliness of Leechs own character are impressed on his art. We find in it little of the exaggeration and grotesqueness, and none of the fierce political enthusiasm, of which the designs of Gillray are so full. Compared with that of his great contemporary George Cruikshank, his work is restricted both in compass of subject and in artistic dexterity.
