Walter Ledermann Gymnasium in Berlin in 1917, progressing to the Leibniz Gymnasium in the same city in 1920. There he learnt classics, studying Latin for nine years and Greek for six years. The school also taught French but, as was usual at this time, not much science. Although very little mathematics was taught in German schools in general, Walter had the advantage that the Leibniz Gymnasium taught more mathematics than other schools as a mark of respect for Leibniz after whom the school was named. He writes [2]:- Although I was fond of the classics, especially Greek with its wonderful literature, I was fascinated by mathematics immediately after my first lesson at the age of eleven, and I decided there and then to make mathematics my career. In 1928, when he was seventeen years old, Ledermann graduated from the Leibniz Gymnasium and received the necessary certificate which allowed him to study at any German university. He remained in Berlin and entered the University there (now the Humboldt University) to study for the State Examination which was the qualification necessary to enter secondary school teaching. At the University of Berlin Ledermann was taught by many famous mathematicians including Schur Schmidt , von Mises Planck Hopf Feigl , and others. As one might imagine given this array of famous names, he found it a stimulating experience. Ledermann was most influenced by

We interviewed Walter Ledermann in St Andrews in September 2000. Part 1: Parents and upbringing EFR: Could you tell us something about your parents. My father was born in Berlin, although his father came from a part which is now Polish and he was originally a schoolteacher. Because in my father's school there were both Polish and German speaking children, my father was bilingual. I never met my grandfather because he died the year I was born. My parents, my father certainly, entirely felt himself to be German. He had a German name, and was born in Berlin. In the First World War he was called up as a doctor in the medical service, became a captain in the army, was sent to the front in Belgium and France, and so on. He was a very patriotic German, and whatever he saved as a doctor he bought German Government bonds to support the government. Then came hyperinflation in 1922 when money was completely wiped out. In the end, after one year, the new currency was introduced at the rate of 1 to 10 . One billion old marks was one new mark. Then my father got a letter from the bank where he had been saving his assets, saying, "Dear doctor we have, of course, all your savings, your Government bonds etc, and if you would be kind enough to come here and collect them, we will be at your disposal. But we cannot send them to you by post because their total value is less than the stamps ..."

Happy birthday Walter
Professor Walter Ledermann (pictured) will be the guest of honour at a one-day conference on Monday 19 March to celebrate his 90th birthday. Walter, who came to Sussex in 1962 as one of five founding members of the School of Physical Sciences, was Professor of Mathematics from 1965 until his retirement in 1978. According to Professor James Hirschfeld, who is organising the event, Walter was "widely reckoned to be one of our best lecturers" and he continued to give revision classes for first and second years until last year. Two eminent mathematicians of algebra - Peter Neumann from the University of Oxford and Martin Liebeck from Imperial College - will speak on finite groups. The lectures will take place in Pevensey 1A7 and are open to all. The day also includes a buffet lunch (with speeches from Walter and the Dean of SMS, Professor Charles Goldie). See www.maths.sussex.ac.uk for booking details. For any other enquiries, contact James Hirschfeld on jwph@susx.ac.uk

FOUNDING AMERICA'S SOCIAL SYSTEMS
Social Security and Medicare are today considered landmarks in the long struggle to achieve social justice for the nation's elderly, poor, sick and disabled. Most of our unemployed, indigent and otherwise needful citizens could rely only on the meager help of voluntary support such as public charity - until 1940. During that year, the federal government posted off its first social security payment. The even rewarded a mission by a handful of staunch crusaders to lift the burden of poverty and despair from tens of millions of Americans for generations to come. Among the handful were two compassionate Jewish activists in government service who led that campaign and rightfully deserve being called the fathers of the social security in America. Despite their historic accomplishments, both remain virtually unknown. Their paths had met and we meet them now. ISAAC RUBINOW (1875-1936) b. Gordon, Russia Medical Doctor/Economist/Social Worker. He emigrated to the United States and soon after earned a degree in medicine. But he left his practice within several years, distressed at how our medical system ignored the many without the means for decent care. He switched to economics, which together with his knowledge of medicine, would serve as tools to help reverse the system's insensitivity and disregard. Rubinow insisted that all Americans should enjoy a guarantee of social insurance to provide for human needs "without injury to the man's ego and self-respect."
