Urbain Le Verrier, décédé à Eaubonne, près de Paris, le 2 juin 1907, à la suite d'une longue et douloureuse maladie. Fils du grand astronome, M. Le Verrier était né à Paris le 7 novembre 1848. Il était entré à l'École Polytechnique à l'âge de dix-huit ans et avait été nommé Ingénieur au Corps des Mines en 1872. Après avoir, pendant de longues années, professé les cours de métallurgie, de chimie et de préparation mécanique des minerais à l'École des Mines de Saint-Étienne, il fut nommé Ingénieur en chef à Marseille, en 1888, où il professa en même temps le cours de minéralogie a la Faculté des Sciences de cette ville. En 1890, lors de la création de ce cours au Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers, il avait été nommé professeur de métallurgie et travail des métaux. Laissant à Regnault le poste vacant de répétiteur de chimie à Polytechnique, il devient répétiteur de géodésie et de machines (1837) de Savary, qu'il remplace (1839). Ses travaux sur les planètes intéressent Arago, qui l'incite à étudier les perturbations alors inexpliquées d'Uranus. Il découvre ainsi Neptune (31 août 1846) peu après son entrée à l'Institut. Il est le créateur de la chaire de mécanique céleste à la Sorbonne. En 1850, il est rapporteur de la commission mixte chargée de réformer Polytechnique. Élu à la Législative, il entre au Sénat (1852) et devient inspecteur général de l'enseignement supérieur. Directeur de l'Observatoire, il mécontente ses collaborateurs par son autoritarisme (1854). On lui adjoint un comité de surveillance, puis on le remplace par Delaunay (1870). Mais il reprend ses fonctions en 1873, après le décès de Delaunay. Président fondateur de l'Association scientifique de France, il met en place le service des avertissements météorologiques.
