Wednesday, January 22, 2003 Sorry to be so lax at blogging this week. Go look at St. Gaspar's quote on being swamped on the Blogs right sidebar. Came home from Virginia on Monday, and all day Tuesday and Wednesday involved in an emotionally draining Formation Advisory Council Meeting with CPPS priests from all four provinces. It finally ended today with some resolution, but there is still a great deal of work to be done. Now it is late at night, the laundry is finished, and it is time to pack. In the morning I leave for Houston, TX for a Retrouvaille International Board Meeting. There looks to be some fireworks there, some even provided by yours truly. Prayers would be appreciated. I should be giving some reports during the weekend on this blog, so stay tuned. Oh, and by the way, I was born in Oakland so you can probably guess where my Super Bowl loyalties will reside. Sunday Eucharist will come first.

This has been a great vacation, staying at my community’s Province center and taking little side trips to some of Northern California’s more celebrated attractions. Yesterday my sister and I along with some friends did a one-day trip to Yosemite, leaving at 5:00am on Friday morning and returning here at 1:00am Saturday morning. The sights are spectacular and refreshing, and the walks in the quiet woods were exhilarating. If you ever make a trip to California do not neglect to visit one of Earth's natural sanctuaries.

Knowing the history of Los Angeles can make your vacation come alive. The earliest key date in the development of Los Angeles is August 2, 1769. Spanish explorers from the east, led by Junipero Serra and Captain Gaspar de Portola entered what came to be known as Los Angeles. The purpose of the expedition was to establish missions linking San Diego and San Francisco, known as "El Camino Real," or The Royal Road. Legend also has it that during their brief stay in the area, the men experienced three earthquakes. Unfazed by this, the group decided to establish a large settlement.
Los Angeles got its name from Serra who originally called the area "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula," which was obviously shortened later. Throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the mission existed under the control of the Mexican government. On March 9th, 1842, Francisco Lopez discovered gold in the Santa Clarita Valley and by 1845, U.S. troops began battling for control of California. On January 9, 1847, Commodore Stockton recaptured Los Angeles for the third and final time. And just days later Mexican general Andres Pico surrendered California to U.S. General John Fremont. I am writing in response to the commentary article, , by Mr. Scott Lax. Although I do not subscribe to the idea of war, the idea Mr. Lax proposes sounds okay by me. I am a 47-year old male so of course I would be included. Mr. Lax, why not just say any registered republican should be sent to war? Is that it? Why not just say plain and simply if I, a 47-year old, would like to take the place of his 17-year old son in a draft, I should be allowed to do so? No restrictions on age or sex. Gabriel Gaspar

Flats Fishing on a Budget in Mexico
by Steve Morgan
AFTER forty hours of travelling, of sleeping in airport waiting lounges on three continents; of deciding whether American English or Spanish was more difficult to understand - and for the last ten minutes, sweating profusely - I finally left the bags unattended and tested the hammock. Sun-up ... time to go bonefishing.
Face to face with billy the bonefish.

Most people look for a bed or a beach to continue their relaxation.
PUNTA ALLEN
Punta Allen - at the end of the road to nowhere.
BONEYS .... BIG BONEYS
Actually, I lie. Some of the abundant longboats adorning the Caribbean beach front have 60hp Yamahas and the fact that I could see only Yammies in the 100 strong fleet speaks volumes for their reliability in the tropics.
My first came half an hour after we started wading the flats.
Never backwards in coming forward, when John and Tony were deciding who was going to have the first shot, I grabbed Gaspar and started wading and after chasing several shadows, I finally came face to face with a small school.
They were feeding in a rock-lined sandy bay about ten metres in diameter - about eight fish cruising slowly and digging their noses in the sand. Careful not to spook the fish by laying the #9 Bonefish line across their backs, I dropped the brown Charlie six feet ahead of the leading fish.

The People Behind The ATF3
The ATF3 didn't just happen... it is the result of millions of man hours, poured into it by dedicated professionals over a span of more than three decades. One of the few people who was present on the program for the majority of those three decades, John Evans, has compiled a list of Garrett people who have worked on the program at one time or another. Thanks also to Rick Burkmier and Mark McSorley Although John's memory is excellent, we apologize if we inadvertently missed any individuals. If you contributed to the program and are not on the list, please e-mail me so I can add you to the list. Except for one, the list does not contain people within the U.S. Coast Guard or at Dassault who contributed to the development of the engine. I would like to add you also, so please e-mail me with your story. We're also trying to compile a short bio of each person on the list with a photo. The ones for which I have a bio will have a hyperlink on the name. Click on it to read the person's bio. If you'd like to submit a bio, check the bio page to see what information we're gathering and e-mail it to me with a face shot of yourself.

http://www.press.uillinois.edu/epub/books/vives/life.html
The Life of Juan Luis Vives
The Spanish humanist Juan Luis Vives has been recognized as the most important voice in sixteenth-century Europe in defining the roles and educational principles pertaining to women. This characterization is based on the popularity of a single work: his De Institutione Foeminae Christianae. The English translation, The Instruction of a Christen Woman by Richard Hyrde, a member of the household of Thomas More, was first printed circa 1529 by Thomas Berthelet. Subsequently it was published at least eight more times within the century, with variations reflecting political and religious changes in English culture. After the last sixteenth-century edition, however, the work was essentially lost from view until twentieth-century scholars rediscovered it. These scholars, however, have been generally unaware of the life story of its author. Similarly, scholars focusing on the humanist thinker's life and times, or on his many influential philosophical and religious writings, have paid little attention to his work on women. Thus members of neither group appear to have recognized the conjoining of certain traumatic events in Vives's life with the creation of this extraordinary treatise. The one previous student of Vives who has dealt with both topics was unaware that Vives was nearly prostrated by personal anxieties as he prepared to write this work. Early in the twentieth century, Foster Watson introduced Vives the man and Vives the thinker to readers of our era. Watson admired him for his innovative and commonsensical way of thinking and for his intellectual influence upon his contemporaries.
