Laplace, Pierre Simon de (1749-1827)
French mathematician, astronomer, and physicist who, in 1796, announced an early version of the nebular hypothesis - the now generally-accepted theory of how our planetary system formed. The solar system, Laplace said, originated out of a gradually cooling cloud of gas, with the planets most remote from the center condensing first. This theory had a strong influence on subsequent speculation about the nature of our neighboring worlds. It implied that the inner worlds were younger and that, in particular, cloud-covered Venus might be an immature version of the Earth - a virgin world. By contrast, planets further from the Sun, such as Mars, would have formed later and therefore could be expected to be more highly evolved. Laplace's theory also suggested that planets are a natural consequence of the evolution of stars, so that many stars ought to have planetary retinues. It therefore provided powerful support for the doctrine of pluralism

Labriola, Antonio (1843-1904) Italian philosopher and socialist, father of Italian Marxism. Labriola was born in Cassino in 1843. He studied Hegelian philosophy at the University of Naples under Bertrando Spaventa, who saw in the new Italian State the realization of the Hegelian ideal. Spaventa's brothers Bertrando and Silvio were also typical exponents of the historical right, liberal but not democratic. Lectures on the Philosophy of the History Between 1870 and 1874 (before the fall of the Right), Labriola wrote for liberal political journals, such as Gazzetta di Napoli Il Piccolo and Monitore di Bologna The Origin and nature of the passions in the Ethics of Spinoza of 1866, the The Doctrine of Socrates according to Senofonte, Platone and Aristotle of 1871, the On Moral freedom and the Morality of Religion , both of 1873). In 1874 he became Professor of Moral Philosophy and Pedagogy at the University of Rome. Subsequently he lectured on philosophy, philosophy of history and pedagogy. Problems of the Philosophy of History and Socialism Around 1890 he began to study the works of Marx and Engels and became convinced that in the modern world the most creative and revolutionary force is the working class Socialist movement. He entered into an intense correspondence with the leading exponents of European Socialism: Engels, Kautsky, Bernstein, Georges Sorel. He considered German Social Democracy to be a model for Italy, although he considered Italy to be a more backward nation. He was the main organiser of the May Day demonstrations in Rome in 1891. His

    PIERRE SIMON, MARQUIS DE LAPLACE
LAPLACE, PIERRE SIMON, MARQUIS DE With these brilliant performances the first period of Laplaces scientific career may be said to have closed. If he ceased to make striking discoveries in celestial mechanics, it was rather their subject-matter than his powers that failed. The general working of the great machine was now laid bare, and it needed a further advance of knowledge to bring a fresh set of problems within reach of investigation. The time had come when the results obtained in the development and application of the law of gravitation by three generations of illustrious mathematicians might be presented from a single point of view. To this task the second period of Laplaces activity was devoted. As a monument of mathematical genius applied to the celestial revolutions, the Mdcanique cleste ranks second only to the Principia of Newton. J. B. Biot, who assisted in the correction of its proof sheets, remarked that it would have extended, had the demonstrations been fully developed, to eight or ten instead of five volumes; and he saw at times the author himself obliged to devote an hours labor to recovering the dropped links in the chain of reasoning covered by the recurring formula. Ii est ais a voir. 2 The Exposition du systme du inonde (Paris, 1796) has been styled by Arago the Mdcanique cleste disembarrassed of its analytical paraphernalia. Conclusions are not merely stated in it, but the methods pursued for their attainment are indicated. It has the strength of an analytical treatise, the charm of a popular dissertation. The style is lucid and masterly, and the summary of astronomical history with which it terminates has been reckoned one of the masterpieces of the language. To this linguistic excellence the writer owed the place accorded to him Plan de lOuvrage, Euvres, tom. i. p 1.
