Edited and with an Introduction by Matteo Motterlini. Chicago, Chicago U.P., 1999, pp. 416, $34.00, ISBN 0-226-46774-0. Presentazione di Matteo Motterlini. Indice Autori Links The work that helped to determine Paul Feyerabend's fame and notoriety, Against Method , stemmed from Imre Lakatos's challenge: "In 1970 Imre cornered me at a party. 'Paul,' he said, 'you have such strange ideas. Why don't you write them down? I shall write a reply, we publish the whole thing and I promise youwe shall have a lot of fun.'" Although Lakatos died before he could write his reply, For and Against Method reconstructs his original counter-arguments from lectures and correspondence previously unpublished in English, allowing us to enjoy the "fun" two of this century's most eminent philosophers had, matching their wits and ideas on the subject of the scientific method. For and Against Method opens with an imaginary dialogue between Lakatos and Feyerabend, which Matteo Motterlini has constructed, based on their published works, to synthesize their positions and arguments. Part one presents the transcripts of the last lectures on method that Lakatos delivered. Part two, Feyerabend's response, consists of a previously published essay on anarchism, which began the attack on Lakatos's position that Feyerabend later continued in

    Science as Successful Prediction
The following excerpt was originally published in Criticism and the Growth of Knowledge
    by Imre Lakatos
Science: Reason or Religion? Belief may be a regrettably unavoidable biological weakness to be kept under the control of criticism: but commitment is for Popper an outright crime. Kuhn thinks otherwise. He too rejects the idea that science grows by accumulation of eternal truths.[ ] He too takes his main inspiration from Einstein's overthrow of Newtonian physics. His main problem too is scientific revolution For Popper scientific change is rational or at least rationally reconstructible and falls in the realm of the logic of discovery (social) psychology of discovery . Scientific change is a kind of religious change. The clash between Popper and Kuhn is not about a mere technical point in epistemology. It concerns our central intellectual values, and has implications not only for theoretical physics but also for the underdeveloped social sciences and even for moral and political philosophy. If even in science there is no a way of judging a theory but by assessing the number, faith and vocal energy of its supporters, then this must be even more so in the social sciences: truth lies in power. Thus Kuhn's position would vindicate, no doubt, unintentionally, the basic political credo of contemporary religious maniacs ("student revolutionaries").

Imre Lakatos was born in Hungary; he spent hard years, as a Jewish man, during and after the second world war. And he fled from Hungary after the revolution against the Russian regime in 1956, and eventually came to England. Lakatos was influenced by Karl Popper and George Polya (mathematician), and he finished his doctoral work by writing a thesis on the Logic of Mathematical Discovery submitted to Cambridge in 1961. (Lakatos in 1961; photo by courtesy of LSE Lakatos website , maintained by Alex Bellamy) From 1960 he taught at the London School of Economics, and eventually succeeded Popper's position there, but their views on the philosophy of science diverged. Lakatos is most famous for his "methodology of research programs" which was formed by a confrontation with Kuhn's view on paradigm. He defended, with Popper, rationalism in the philosophy of science, but took in some elements from Kuhn and inductivism. According to Lakatos, scientists work under some tradition called a "research program", which has some theoretical assumptions called "hard core", and they try to solve specific problems by adding and modifying auxiliary hypotheses and others. Since the "hard core" is immune to falsification by their "methodological decisions", problem-solving is done by modifications and innovations in auxiliary hypotheses and assumptions which are collectively called "protective belt" around the "hard core". This process produces a history of a research program, a succession of modified theories sharing the "hard core". Lakatos thought that we can meaningfully speak of rationality of adopting, modifying, or abandoning and replacing, such a research program.

LAKATOS, Imre, 1922-1974, Professor Of Logic
    Covering Dates:1945-1978
Life/Work: Imre Lakatos was born in Hungary with the family name of Lipsitz. Due to anti-semitism his mother took him to live in Debrecen. He attended Debrecen University and graduated in 1944. During the Nazi occupation of Hungary he changed his name to Molnar and joined the underground resistance. During the war he became a committed communist and after the war once more changed his name, this time to Lakatos.
In 1947 he was made a secretary in the Ministry of Education and became involved in the reform of Higher Education in Hungary. In 1948 he wrote a doctoral thesis on concept formation in science and received his degree from Budapest University. However his political prominence and "revisionist" tendencies meant that he fell foul of the campaign against the "Hungarian-Tito-ists". He was arrested in 1950 and spent the next three years in jail.
He was released in 1953 and in 1954 Alfred Renyi obtained a post for him in the Mathematical Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Science. His job was to translate important mathematical works into Hungarian. It was here that he first came into contact with western books and journals, in particular the work of Karl Popper and Polya.

    Imre Lakatos

Imre Lakatos (1922-74) lectured at LSE from 1959 until his death in 1974. A Hungarian, he had been a research student of Hegelian-Marxist philosophy under György Lukacs before leaving Hungary to study in Moscow in 1949. On his return to Hungary in 1950 he was imprisoned for four years. He supported the Hungarian uprising in 1956 and left the country after its suppression. In 1959 he was appointed to a readership in the School's Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method. He became Professor of Logic in 1969.
Lakatos is famous as a philosopher of mathematics and science in the liberal-rationalist tradition. In Proofs and Refutations (1976) he presented an epistemology for mathematics in the form of a multiple dialogue where mathematical proofs are negotiated. It was at LSE he formulated his methodology of scientific research programmes to explain scientific progress. He disagreed with Popper's falsificationism, his own philosophy replacing Popper's 'truth' with a concept of progress. He was a charismatic and loved figure. Following Lakatos' death in 1974, Ernest Gellner described the philosopher's lectures as 'intelligible, fascinating, dramatic and above all conspicuously amusing'. The philosopher of science Paul Feyerabend (1924-94) described Lakatos as 'a fascinating person, an outstanding thinker and the best philosopher of science of our strange and uncomfortable century'. Lakatos' published works include:
