GEORGES SIMENON
Biographie

Primedia Business How the Pictures in Philippe Kahn's Head Become the Photos on Your Phone Tim McElligott Wireless Review, Feb 1, 2004 Print-friendly format E-mail this information It was Silicon Valley that lured young Philippe Kahn away from teaching mathematics in France in 1982, at the age of 29. And it is there he quickly made his name and his fortune, such as it is. But less than 30 miles as the condor flies to the southwest of the infamous valley is a hamlet, by comparison, called Santa Cruz. It's there where Kahn is making his future and, in a way, helping to make ours by enabling wireless operators to bring advanced wireless picture and video communications technology to the masses. Santa Cruz was founded in the niche between Monterey Bay and the southern coastal range. It is a fitting home for an entrepreneur known for filling a niche as Kahn did by founding software language and developer toolkit company Borland in 1982 and mobile data synchronization company Starfish in 1994. The vision began in a maternity ward in 1997. Along with the usual items one packs for the delivery room, Kahn packed his digital camera, laptop and cell phone. During the down time shortly after the birth of his daughter Sophie, Kahn tinkered with his gadgets, hacked out some code and 48 hours later began sending streams of baby pictures to friends and family.

offshore racing records for east and west of North America and points in
between, but its next win against Philippe Kahn's Pegasus will be its first. The rivalry stands at 2-0 after last weekend's 13th annual Coastal Cup race
when Pegasus 77, a Reichel/Pugh 77, ran away from Pyewacket, an R/P 75, in
the record time of 26 hours 24 minutes 55 seconds for the Encinal Yacht
Club's 360-nautical mile race from San Francisco to Santa Catalina Island.
With early strong winds fading to a drifter, Pyewacket dropped out 25 miles
from the finish 2 1/2 hours after Pegasus 77 had finished. "We got lucky on this race," Kahn said. "It won't be the same at
[Transpac]."

71. To Reach The Clouds, By Philippe Petit
by philippe Petit. . all over the world. No one wishes to hire me, practitionerof an absurd arrogance; for a while I make sure it stays that way.
http://www.fsgbooks.com/fsg/toreachcloudsexcerpt.htm
To Reach the Clouds
My High Wire Walk Between the TwinTowers by Philippe Petit Back to main To Reach the Clouds page BEFORE Rebel poet? By four years old, disdain for my fellow man starts to show: I climb onto everything to distance myself. At age six, I announce, "When I grow up, I want to be a theatrical director!" Then I proceed to learn magic on my own. During the next ten years, I study drawing, painting, sculpting, fencing, printing, carpentry, theater, and horseback riding, all with prestigious masters; I embrace focus, tenacity, respect for the tool, and passion. The reaction of my parents to my unruly individuality is to legally emancipate me on my seventeenth birthday. Autodidact, I become a juggler and a tightrope walker. By the time I turn eighteen, I've been expelled from five schools for practicing the art of the pickpocket on my teachers and the art of card manipulation under my desk. I refuse to take the basic exam to prove I can read, write, and count, and thereby jeopardize my chances of landing a job picking up garbage or operating a cash register. Instead, I leave home and become a wandering troubadour, a street-juggler without a permit who is arrested constantly . . . all over the world. No one wishes to hire me, practitioner of an absurd arrogance; for a while I make sure it stays that way. It becomes essential to write, play chess, learn Russian and bullfighting, discover architecture and engineering, invent hiding places, erect tree houses, train at lock-picking to indulge my gourmandise for knowledge while honing my perfectionism.

MONSIEUR HIRE
Date of publication: 06/15/1990 For cast, rating and other information, (click here) By Roger Ebert
Monsieur Hire's life is organized with the extreme precision of a man who fears that any deviation from routine could destroy him. He lives alone in a neatly ordered room, where everything has its place. He dresses carefully and conservatively and goes out every day to work by himself in a small office in the town, where he operates a mail-order business. He comes home to his dinner of a hard-boiled egg. He listens to the same piece of music, over and over. He speaks to people only to observe the formalities: "Good morning." "Nice day."
His sexual life is equally precise. Hour after hour, he stands in his darkened room, looking across the small courtyard of his building into the window of a young woman who lives directly opposite, and one floor below. She never pulls her shades. He watches her dress, undress, read, eat, listen to the radio, make love. Hour after hour.
Another young woman is found dead in the neighborhood - her body cast aside in an overgrown vacant lot. Who committed the crime? There are no suspects, but in this neighborhood a man like Monsieur Hire always is a suspect. He has no friends, no associations, no "life." The neighbors have marked him out as peculiar. To look at him, you would think it was absurd that he could kill anyone. But suspicion begins to grow.

For Coffee
in Paris,
the Future
is Now
An Interview With Philippe Bloch of Columbus Cafés By Jonathan Bell
A few years ago in Paris , I met a young man brimming with enthusiasm for new wave coffee bars - America’s contribution to the oldest coffee tradition of all -the “café,” the public place where one can go to enjoy coffee. The man was Philippe Bloch, and with his partner, he had just created the Columbus Café, Paris’ first and sometimes faltering step towards reinvigorating public coffee (and tea) consumption in France. The first Columbus Café was unabashedly American in menu and styling. In those early days, at the first café, one could watch customers being visibly puzzled as to how to use the store. Many pedestrians stopped to look in, but passed on, uncertain of what value, if any, it might hold for them. All that has changed in only a few years’ time. Columbus Cafés have sprung up in several locations and are enjoying considerable success. What was at first pioneering is now an established trend that will soon be propelled into higher gear as Starbucks begins implementing its plan to first concentrate large scale European expansion in both France and Spain. As the traditional and established coffee cultures of Europe face increasing pressure to change, now seemed a good moment to interview Philippe Bloch about what Columbus Cafés has achieved as a small but dynamic chain, how it happened and where it is going.
