Philippe de la Hire
Mathematician, astronomer, physicist, naturalist, and painter, b. in Paris, 18 March, 1640; d. in Paris, 21 April, 1718; was, as Fontenelle said, an academy in himself. His father, Laurent de La Hire, (1606-1656), was a distinguished artist. Philippe first studied painting in Rome, where he had gone for his health in 1660, but on his return to Paris, soon devoted himself to the classics and to science. He showed particular aptitude for mathematics, in which subject he was successively the pupil and associate in original investigation of Desargues. In 1678, he was made a member of the Academy of Sciences, section of astronomy. Beginning in 1679, in connexion with the construction of a map for the Government, he made extended observations in Brittany, Guienne, Calais, Dunkirk, and Provence. In 1683, he continued the principal meridian north from Paris, Cassini The chief contributions of La Hire were in the department of pure geometry. Although familiar with the analytic method of Descartes , which he followed in treatises published in 1679, his most important works were developed in the method of the ancients. He continued the work of Desargues and of

La Hire's Theorem: What Is It About?
A Mathematical Droodle
Explanation Alexander Bogomolny
La Hire's Theorem
The applet suggests the following theorem: If point A lies on the polar of point B, then point B lies on the polar of A. The theorem bears the name of Philippe de La Hire , a French artist, architect and mathematician born in the 17 th century.
Proof
By definition , the polar of B is perpendicular to OB, where O is the center of the circle of reference at the inverse image C of B. Therefore, where R is the radius of the circle. Assume point A lies on polar of point B. Then AC is perpendicular OB. Let D lie on OA with BD perpendicular to the latter. Triangles OAC and OBD are similar (they are both right and share an angle at O.) From here we obtain a proportion OA/OB = OC/OD, which can also be written as , so that D is the inverse image of A and BD is its polar, which proves the theorem. Note that the proof works in all cases, except where the three points O, A, and B are collinear. The polars of A and B are then parallel, the triangles OAC and OBD degenerate into straight line segments, and the proof fails. But then obviously A coincides with C, and (1) still holds. In this case, A and C are just inverse images of each other.

Philippe de la Hire was educated as an artist and became skilled in drawing and painting. He visited Italy where he spent four years developing his artistic skills and learning geometry. The interest in geometry arose from his study of perspective in art. Much influenced by the work of Desargues , La Hire worked on conic sections which he treated projectively. He published his first work on conic sections in 1673. In 1675 he published a more comprehensive work on conic sections Sectiones conicae which contained a description of Desargues projective geometry . In 1708 he calculated the length of the cardioid. Other topics to which he made important contributions included astronomy, physics and geodesy. In astronomy he installed the first transit instrument in the Paris Observatory. He also produced tables giving the movements of the Sun, Moon and the planets. He did much work on surveying, in particular taking measurements of the French coastline. He designed an instrument to find the level at a site. He was also a major contributor to a project to map France.

In 1673 La Hire published Nouvelle methode en géometrie pour les sections des superficies coniques et cylindriques from his research in constructing conic sections. Twelve years later he published a much more extensive work, Sectiones conicae, through which Desargues' projective geometry became known.

Subject: [HM] La Hire and spaces of more than three dimensions Author: udai.venedem@wanadoo.fr Date: Sun, 20 Oct 2002 21:38:11 +0200 Dear Listers, La Hire is not a Californian rent-a-car company, but a famous mathematician, son of a most famous painter, and both were among (rare) Desargues' friends. For example, the "Holy Family", by Laurent, shows, by its "geometric" perspective, a very pertinent application of Desargues' teaching. And Philippe de La Hire is the one who transmitted the theoretical part of the Master's "universal method", namely projective geometry. La Hire wrote, among others, some books about conics. One of them is: NOUVEAUX ELEMENS DES SECTIONS CONIQUES, LES LIEUX GEOMETRIQUES, LA CONSTRUCTION, OU EFFECTION DES EQUATIONS. Paris, Pralard, 1679. In it, I fail to find a trace of what Taton claims about "the possible extension of space to more than three dimensions", La Hire is supposed to have made. Did Taton dream?
