Working Magick with the Cthulhu Mythos
article
by George D. Jackson
During the course of teaching my class "The Path of the Adept," the subject of Necronomic magick and the Cthulhu Mythos invariably seems to arise. If one is going to explore this area, I deem it absolutely necessary that a person has a knowledge of its originator, Howard Phillips Lovecraft. H.P. Lovecraft was born August 20, 1890, and died March 15, 1937, at the age of 46. He was a child prodigy, reading at two and writing at three. His parents were, to say the least, strange. His father died insane while Lovecraft was still a small child, and his mother was hugely overprotective and misanthropic. She had a pronounced aversion to touching him as a child. She too died while he was young. One of the key figures in his childhood was his grandfather, Whippie Phillips, who told him ghost stories and tales of witchcraft while he was still very small. One of the first books that he read was Grimm's Tales, to be followed by The Arabian Nights. At this time, he was five years old. One of his older relatives suggested he assume the name of "Abdul Alhazred," which was probably derived from "Hazard," a family connected to the Phillipses. Alhazred was later to be identified as the author of

BOB KUTTNER IS WORRIED. He's BOB KUTTNER IS WORRIED . He's afraid that we've reached an ideological tipping point in favor of conservatism. Funny, a reporter just asked me that as part of an interview, which in a way is evidence that Kuttner may be right. On the other hand, he seemed to think that I am a conservative, and that InstaPundit is part of the tipping. Well, if I am I'm a pro-cloning, pro-gay-marriage conservative who wants to see Mars made earthlike and settled by humans. If that's conservatism, I'm your man! And that underscores the problem. Conservatism, as that term is used by a lot of people, doesn't mean much more than skepticism toward, well, the likes of Bob Kuttner. So if it triumphs, will it really be that huge a change? For Bob Kuttner, maybe. posted at 09:38 AM by Glenn Reynolds If you've got a modem, I've got an opinion!

ROBERT KUTTNER HAS LOST IT IN HIS DEBATE WITH JOHANN NORBERG. Here are a few lines from Kuttner's reasoned argumentation: But you have a very unfortunate habit of just making things up when the facts don't happen to fit your nutty theories. There's also a rich debate, not resolved by recourse to your kind of fundamentalism Debating you is like debating a devotee of a fundamentalist religion. How can an intelligent person who reads the newspapers possibly believe that? This has been a really depressing exchange, because you are so sophomoric and poorly informed in your extreme views. You are a utopian and an absolutist. You offer no hypotheses that are falsifiable, which makes you a dogmatist. Radley Balko has pointed out Kuttner's behavior. So has this post from the Catallarchy blog. Kuttner's not exactly foaming at the mouth here, but Norberg wins the reasonableness battle hands-down. UPDATE: Julian Sanchez comments on Kuttner's blown fuse. posted at 12:22 PM by Glenn Reynolds If you've got a modem, I've got an opinion!

Mitologia Cthulhu w Polsce

Byli to m.in. August Derleth, Robert Bloch, Henry Kuttner, Clark Ashton Smith, Ramsey Campbell, Brian Lumley i wielu wielu innych. Oto one.

THE AMERICAN FANTASY TRADITION
Edited by Brian M. Thomsen
Tor/ 606 pages/ $27.95
ISBN: 0-765-30152-0 Brian M Thomsen, the editor of this big fat (over 600 pages) anthology, supposedly took 22 years to research it. Perhaps it took over two decades simply to winnow the list of possibilities down to a reasonable number. And since more than a dozen of the selections weren't published until after he started his quest, it must have occasionally been like swimming upstream. There are no big surprises here, although the inclusion of some of the more recent stories might be small ones until they are read and prove so entirely suitable. The selections all fit the theme of the American tradition of fantasy within the larger context of American literature and into Thomsen's three divisions (The American Tale Folk, Tall and Weird, Fantastic Americana, and Lands of Enchantment in Everyday Life). Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Tor is publishing a book that could (and, one hopes, will) easily become a standard textbook and curriculum anchor but probably has little commercial appeal. In any case, bravo! Thomsen does not provide any flashes of brilliant insight in his introduction relying entirely on the established critical literary theorems, particularly those of Richard Chase. The brief introductions to each story are simple and biographical. About the most controversial thing he says (in his foreword) is that "a substantial number of major American authors (such as Edgar Allan Poe and Robertson Davies) who have dabbled in the fantastic realms fall outside of the thematic canons with greater affinities to the European roots of the genre rather than that of the 'home-grown' variety." Poe and Daviesget left out.
