Profil af Ulrich Kohlenbach Ulrich Kohlenbach has held a research position at Brics since 1997 and since 2000 he has been a part of the permanent faculty at Daimi. Last semester he taught the course ”Models and Logic” together with Mogens Nielsen and this semester he is teaching the course ”Logic and Proof Interpretations”. In 1990 I received my PhD degree in mathematics. The next year I spent publishing the main results of my thesis in a series of papers. More importantly, I got married to my wife Gabriele the same year. As my assistant position was about to terminate, I was in need of a new position in order to work on the next "thesis" the so-called "Habilitationsschrift", a peculiar German requirement for a career as a university teacher. This time the chair of "Analytic Number Theory", Wolfgang Schwarz helped me out and he was as supportive of my research as Bliedtner had been before. In 1995, my Habilitationsschrift "Real growth in standard parts of analysis" which deals with the extractability of polynomial bounds from interesting fragments of analysis was accepted by the department of mathematics and I was awarded the title "Privatdozent". The next year, my wife and I moved to the US where I took up a visiting position at the Mathematics Department of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Despite an exhausting teaching load (so-called "Michigan reform calculus") this was an exciting year having as eminent logicians as Andreas Blass, Peter Hinman, Yuri Gurevich and Kevin Compton as colleagues.

Philosophy Department RESEARCH INTERESTS My research interests fall in three areas: formal logic with emphasis on proof theory and non-classical logics in computer science; history and philosophy of logic, history of analytic philosophy; and philosophy of mathematics. Although these are distinct areas, they are closely connected: a large part of (early) analytic philosophy was concerned with logical investigations and philosophy of mathematics (especially in Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein); past and current philosophy of mathematics is tightly linked to the advances of formal logic in the last hundred years, in no small part to proof theory; and much of the history of logic of the early 20th century is history of non-classical logic. Michael Beeson, Biographical Sketch I was born in Topeka, Kansas, on August 19, 1945, a couple of weeks after the bomb fell on Hiroshima. I grew up in Topeka, Dodge City, and Wichita, and graduated from Topeka High School in 1963. I spent four years at Caltech, where I studied both mathematics and physics, graduating in 1967. In my senior year I was exposed to mathematical logic, and decided that would be my subject. I remember Richard Feynman, from whom I took a lecture course on quantum electrodynamics, but who also would eat in the student cafeteria with us many a Friday afternoon, and who gave us advice on all subjects, for example: "Listen, son. You know those jokes in magazines about married couples? Those aren't jokes! They're all true." I then went to graduate school at Stanford to study logic under Dana Scott. When I arrived, I went to see Dana and asked to do an independent study with him. "Fine," he said, "go work all the problems in Shoenfield's Mathematical Logic ". They filled four notebooks. (However, after my first year there, Dana departed for Oxford, and I eventually got my Ph. D. under Friedman and Kreisel as joint advisors, with a lot of unofficial advice from Sol Feferman.) Stanford was a very stimulating environment. There I learned mathematical logic from Dana Scott, Sol Feferman, Georg Kreisel, and Harvey Friedman, artifical intelligence from John McCarthy, minimal surfaces from Bob Osserman and Bob Finn, number theory from Paul Cohen, and differential equations from Professors Schiffer and Gilbarg. I acquired a golden retriever, whom I named Socrates, because I was taking a course in Greek philosophy at the time.
