Der "Schalker Kreisel" (1933-1942) von links: Fritz Szepan, Herbert Burdenski, Ernst Kuzorra (1940) Die beste deutsche Fußballmannschaft der Jahre vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg kam aus Gelsenkirchens Stadtteil Schalke. Der 1904 gegründete Verein nahm etwa gleichzeitig mit dem "Dritten Reich" seinen Aufschwung und errang 1934 zum ersten Mal den deutschen Meistertitel, dem bis 1942 noch fünf weitere folgten. Legendär war dabei das offensive Kurzpassspiel, dessen Geschwindigkeit die meisten Gegnenspieler in Verwirrung stürzte, so dass bald vom "Schalker Kreisel" die Rede war. In jenen Jahren nannte man Schalke 04 bei seinen Gegnern, und davon gab es im Ruhrgebiet nicht wenige, respektlos den "Polackenverein". Höhepunkt war vielleicht das Endspiel um die "großdeutsche Meisterschaft" gegen Admira Wien im Sommer 1939 im Berliner Olympiastadion, das mit einem 9:0-Sieg der Schalker "Knappen" endete. Im nationalsozialistischen System war das keine positiv besetzte Bezeichnung und 13 Spieler wehrten sich dagegen in einer offiziellen Erklärung im Fußballfachblatt "Kicker" vom 7. August 1934 energisch. Sie wiesen darauf hin, dass ihre Eltern alle im "heutigen oder früheren Deutschland geboren seien" und sie selber auch keine Immigranten seien. Dies entsprach auch der Wahrheit, doch stammten 10 der Fußballer aus dem Osten, die meisten von ihnen aus Masuren, andere aus Schlesien und Großpolen. Das bedeutete freilich keine propolnische Einstellung, im Gegenteil, einige engagierten sich frühzeitig für Hitler und sein System, änderten teilweise sogar ihre Namen: aus Czerwiñski wurde Rothardt, aus Przytulla Valentin. A corollary of Kreisel's argument is that "intuitively valid" and "valid in all set-theoretic structures" have the same extension. (5) V(A) Val(A) Mephisto emerges from behind podium.
