My name isn't actually my name. I didn't change it to protect my anonymity or be someone else. I didn't really change it at all. It kind of attacked me and attached itself. The Story: I had a really mean spanish teacher who we will call Ms. Jespersen (which really is her name, I'm just to lazy to think up a good new name). Anyways, she can't speak english. I assumed that the first rule of teaching another language was that you have to know the one you're teaching in (boy was I wrong). She couldn't pronounce my real name and thusly gave me a new one. So I became Sofia in spanish class. And little by little Sofia oozed out of the spanish room and followed me to lunch and everywhere else. After a while I stopped resenting my new name because it is easier to pronounce than my old one (which was 7 letters and 3 syllables long. If you add it to my last name you get 16 letter and 6 syllables which is far beyond the comprehension of anyone who dares to ask for it) and it means wisdom in Greek . All in all it worked out, but I wish it didn't have the aura of the devil worshipping Jespersen floating about it. People, places and things that stole my name (before I did)...

Pronunciation Guide to Mathematicians
These are mathematicians frequently encountered by undergraduate students. For a more complete listing, A History of Mathematics: An Introduction , by Victor Katz (Harper Collins) has a wonderful pronunciation guide as part of the index. Interested persons are urged to consult this text.
Note on Pronunciation
Not all of the phonetic pronunciation symbols can be used in HTML (for example the schwa sound symbol and long vowel symbols) so this guide uses some nonstandard symbolism. Not all Web browsers, for example, Lynx, recognize some of the special characters used in this document. The accented syllable is capitalized. Most of the links are to MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive and can be quite slow. Abel

Note, that you could find out most of the following information by chatting with Sofia.
    • Why is the project called Sofia?
There is a tradition to call chatrobots with names. The most prominent is "Alice". Sofia Kovalevskaya (1850-1891) was a mathematician working on partial differential equations, Abelian integrals among other things.
    • What software does Sofia use?
We currently use a version of Program D developed by Noel Bush and contributors in Java. This program seems currently no more in development. It was the most stable open source solution we could find and runs reasonablly well on Linux. We keep looking for updates since there are stability issues problems when fed huge data junks.
    • On which hardware does sofia run Sofia lives in a PowerEdge 2650 Server (dual 3.06GHz Intel Xeon, 3Gig Memory, 4 hot-plug SCSI drives Raid X).

A Good Book To Read While reading this novel I was surprised by how close the themes that run through the book are to our experiences today. Here is what Michael Katz, translator and editor of the Norton Critical Editions, has to say about the book: This remarkable Russian novella combines contemporary social themes, elements of the author's extraordinary autobiography, and the controversial woman's question of the nineteenth-century culture. I agree with everything he as to say. The book is only 139 pages long, so if you are looking for an enjoyable short read, this is it.
Sofia Kovalevskaya was born in 1850 in Russia. She lived only 41 years but managed to become the first European woman to hold a doctorate in mathematics (she was 24 at the time), and the first female member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She had many other accomplishments as well. The postage stamp shown here was issued by Russia in 1996 to honor her.

Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya January 15 February 10 ) was a Russian mathematician and a student of Karl Weierstrass in Berlin . In she was appointed professor at Stockholm University , the first woman in Europe to become a professor. Kovalevskaya was born in Moscow . Her father was Vasily Vasilievich Kriukovskoi (1800-1874), an artillery officer of Polish descent. He managed to convince the Russians to list him as descended of aristocracy, a Hungarian king in particular; in he was permitted to change his surname to Korvin-Krukovsky. Her mother was Elizaveta Fyodorovna Schubert (1820-1879). She was granddaughter of Theodor Schubert aka Fyodor Ivanovich Schubert (mathematician and astronomer of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences ) via Fyodor Fyodorovich Schubert Sofia Kovalevskaya contributed to the understanding of partial differential equations and essentially completed the study of rotating solids, applying the then-new theory of Abelian functions (and thus "justifying" the enormous effort that was put into the theory). Kovalevskaya had a crush on Fyodor Dostoevsky and practiced his favourite piano work, Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, to get his attention, but he was focussed on the older sister Anna and he very probably proposed to her.

    Introduction
A normal intelligence quotient (IQ) ranges from 85 to 115 (According to the Stanford-Binet scale). Only approximately 1% of the people in the world have an IQ of 135 or over. In 1926, psychologist Dr. Catherine Morris Cox - who had been assisted by Dr. Lewis M. Terman, Dr. Florence L. Goodenaugh, and Dr. Kate Gordon - published a study "of the most eminent men and women" who had lived between 1450 and 1850 to estimate what their IQs might have been. The resultant IQs were based largely on the degree sof brightness and intelligence each subject showed before attaining the age of 17. Taken from a revised and completed version of this study, table II shows the projected IQs of some of the best scorers. For comparison I have included table I which shows the IQs' relation to educational level.

Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
Some suggestions on the historical perspective might be:
    (a) Any wars etc.
    (b) Scientific breakthroughs of the time
    (c) Major discoveries of the time
    (d) How did this mathematician change history etc.
