Sofia Kovalevskaya
Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya (born January 15 in Moscow , died February 10 in Stockholm .) was a Russia n Mathematician and a student of Karl Weierstrass in Berlin . In she was appointed professor at Stockholm University , the first woman in Europe to become a professor. Contributed to the understanding of partial differential equation s. Essentially completed the study of rotating solids, applying the then-new theory of Abelian functions (and thus "justifying" the enormous effort that was put into the theory). Her father was Vasily Vasilievich Kriukovskoi (1800-1874), artillery officer, of Polish descent. He managed to convince the Russians to list him as descended of aristocracy, a Hungarian king in particular; and in was permitted to change surname to Korvin-Krukovsky. Sophia had a crush on Fyodor Dostoevsky and practiced his favourite piano work, Beethoven's Pathetique Sonata, to get his attention, but he was focussed on the older sister Anna and he very probably proposed to her. (here on has some gaps i'll fill shortly) There seem to have been several roots to Sophia's mathematical bent. Some came from her father, accidentally; he had studied calculus in the army, and when they ran short of proper wallpaper for one house, used his old notes instead. Sophia spent many hours of childhood scrutinising the strange scribbles. Something of it seems to have stuck for when she later took calculus under ... it came to her very quickly, as if it had always been there.

Born: Jan 15, 1850, Moscow, Russia. Died: Feb 10, 1891, Stockholm, Sweden Sofia Kovalevskaya was the middle child of Vasily Korvin-Krukovsky, an artillery general, and Velizaveta Shubert, both well-educated members of the Russian nobility. Sofia was educated by tutors and governess's, lived first at Palabino, the Krukovsky country estate, then in St. Petersburg, and joined her family's social circle which included the author Dostoevsky. Sofia was attracted to mathematics at a very young age. When Sofia was 11 years old, the walls of her nursery were papered with pages of Ostrogradski's lecture notes on differential and integral analysis. She noticed that certain things on the sheets she had heard mentioned by her uncle. Studying the wallpaper was Sofia's introduction to calculus. It was under the family's tutor, Y. I. Malevich, that Sofia undertook her first proper study of mathematics. Sofia 's father decided to put a stop to her mathematics lessons but she borrowed a copy of Bourdeu's Algebra which she read at night when the rest of the household was asleep.

Introduction
Sofia Kovalevskaya was born in the 1800's to a noble Russian family. During this time women were discouraged in the field of mathematics. Karl Weierstrass is known as the father of modern analysis. He didn't start out in the field of mathematics though, and spent about four years of college drunk. Later on he discovered his love for mathematics, and became a great mathematics professor. He made many discoveries in the area of complex numbers, elliptic functions, abelian functions, and calculus of variations. Many great mathematicians came to study under him, including Sofia Kovalevski.
Biography of Wiestrass
Biography of Kovalevski
Sofia Kovalevskaya was born on January 15, 1850 in Moscow Russia to a family of nobility. She died from pnemonia on February 10, 1891 in Stockholm Sweden. Sofia got most of her schooling from tutors, and governesses, since her family was fairly well off. She had her first encounter with calculus in her nursery when she was 11. During the time there was a wallpaper shortage, so her walls had been plastered with pages of Ostrogradski's lecture notes on differential and integral analysis. She became v ery interested in math, and studied her wallpaper with increasing intrigue. Sofia had such a strong love for mathematics, that she began to neglect her other studies. This made her father angry so he decided to stop Sofia's math lessons. Sofia was very dedicated to mathematics, so she borrowed a copy of Boudreau's

Volume 314159 In honor of the five hundredth anniversary of her death, we are going to go back in time to interview Sofia Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya (1850-1891), a famous mathematician, novelist, and advocate of women rights. We will return to February 9, 1891, the day before her death. German Gem : Ms. Kovalevskaya, I want to thank you for meeting with us although you are sick. Kovalevskaya I feel as if a great change has come over me since my illness. I am ready to die in peace. German Gem : I would like to start off by asking you about your interesting beginnings in the field of mathematics. Kovalevskaya : Well, when I was very young, starting at the age of five, my uncle would talk about mathematics and it fascinated me. It was also in my blood; my maternal grandfather and great-grandfather were eminent mathematicians and astronomers. The meaning of the concept [s, my uncle talked about,]

Home Press Office Press Releases 24 January 2002 Generously Endowed Sofia Kovalevskaya Young Scholar's Award for Krzysztof Oplustil: Research in Heidelberg Krzysztof Oplustil On 31 January 2002 the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awarded the Sofia Kovalevskaya Prize to 29 promising young scholars and scientists from 13 different countries. One of the recipients, Krzysztof Oplustil of the University of Cracow, will be pursuing his research activities at the University of Heidelberg. The 500,000 marks that come with the award will be sufficient to cover staff and material costs for a research sojourn of more than three years at Heidelberg's Institute of German and European Company and Economic Law. "The University of Heidelberg is fortunate to be able to welcome this remarkable young research talent," said Heidelberg University Rector Prof. Dr. Peter Hommelhoff. Heidelberg's latest law research acquisition is no stranger to Prof. Hommelhoff, who supervised Oplustil's doctoral dissertation on the protection for creditors afforded by German and Polish law. With young colleagues in Heidelberg the Kovalevskaya laureate will be devoting his efforts to the recently founded "European Company". Says Oplustil: "In terms of eventual accession to the European Union, it is vital for us in Poland to know the European legal system and establish interfaces with its Polish counterpart." Sofia Kovalevskaya also began her career in Heidelberg Mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaya (1850-1891) also began her academic career in Heidelberg. Born in Moscow in 1851, she came to Heidelberg at the age of 19. Initially barred from study like all other women at the time, she was finally permitted to attend lectures unofficially. A few years later she was offered the chair of mathematics at the University of Stockholm, thus becoming one of the first women in Europe to aspire to a university professorship.

MEMOIRS OF CHILDHOOD (also known in English as A RUSSIAN CHILDHOOD) Kovalevskaya's most well known and highly praised work in literature. She relates in beautifully poetic prose her early childhood up to the age of 15 years. The story beautifully expresses the beginnings of her complex relationship to her family and to her sister in particular. Kovalevskaya, as is her trademark, places the story within the wider context of the social problems of the time and place. Frequently translated into English. The most recent translation by Beatrice Stillman, 1978. Novellas: NIGILISTKA
A NIHILIST GIRL The first edition was printed in Geneva, 1892. This is the story of a young girl who strives to be of use to people by participating in revolutionary circles. The prototype for the heroine is Vera Sergievna Goncharova, niece of N.N. Goncharova, Pushkin's wife. Kovalevskaya was acquainted with Vera Goncharova. The novel appeared in two versions in English, one entitled Vera Vorontsova, the other Vera Barantsova. The novella appeared in Russia in 1906, but was then banned. A Czech translation was allowed into Russia in 1908. The novel was also translated into German, French, and Polish. The work is considered one of two outstanding works by Kovalevskaya, the other being her MEMOIRS OF CHILDHOOD. Modern Language Association (MLA) is publishing Natasha Kolchevska's new translation of NIHILIST GIRL in October 2001.

Sofia Kovalevskaya This week's look in the vaults tells us about Sofia Kovalevskaya Kovalevskaya was born on January 15, 1850, in Moscow.
She was a brilliant mathematician and showed an interest in the subject from an early age. When Sofia was about six years old, her father retired from the army and the family moved to live in a castle near the Lithuanian border. She felt unloved and ignored by her parents and this was made worse by the remote location of the castle. She had a strict English governess who would humiliate her if she ever disobeyed or failed to live up to expectations. The family didn't have enough wallpaper for Sofia's room so the walls were covered with some printed notes on advanced maths that her father had bought when he was a student. Little did anyone realise what an effect this would have on Sofia. She spent hours studying the formulas and trying to understand them. She remembered these formulas years later when she began to study maths at an advanced level and amazed her teachers by what she knew.

This is a true piece of art, a compelling love story wrapped into the trials and tribulations of humanity's pursuit of balance with being true to oneself and to those you love. This true story is beautifully told of the tribulations faced by a woman in pursuit of mathematics in a world unaccustomed or accepting of women. I couldn't put it down! Beyond The Limit We enjoyed this book immensely and recommend it to all readers who enjoy history. The book captures the struggles of women who persued higher education in a time of world governmental and social change. The romantic twists and turns of the characters are sure to keep the reader's interest from cover to cover. Brilliant, inspirational, important I highly recommend this book! From the very first page, the story engages the reader and the writing dazzles. This true story is about the trials and struggles of a brilliant, Russian female mathematician, Sofya Kovalevskaya, in the late 1800s. This was not a popular time to be a woman in Russia, and certainly not popular to be a smart woman especially if you wanted to study mathematics! However, the development of mathematics and science in Europe at this time was on fire (as was the politics), and Sofya was right in the thick of it all.
