Mathematics at the Brno German Technical University Introduction This lecture is devoted to education of mathematics at the school which was the first technical school in Brno. The history of the German Technical University is the history of technical educational institution until 1945. In 1849 the school started as a Technical College, and during 1849-1873 it was transformed into Technical University of the second half of 19th century. The students of the school came to Brno from many parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and later from many other countries. The aim of this lecture is to describe the staff at the Departments of Mathematics. There were many renowned mathematicians teaching at this school, especially up to 1918. These, in most cases young, mathematicians became professors of important universities in Austria and Germany. Some of them are e.g. Emanuel Czuber, Ernst Fischer, Johann Radon, Georg Hamel, Richard Mises, and Heinrich Tietze. Some well-known Czech, German, and Austrian mathematicians also tried to become professors at the German Technical University in Brno: for example, Matyas Lerch, Hans Hahn, Wilhelm Blaschke and Emil Artin. The hundred years' history of this school still remains largely unexplored in the Czech Republic. Lothar Koschmieder Narozen: 22. dubna 1890 v Legnici Zemøel: 6. bøezna 1974 v Tuebingen Lothar Koschmieder v rodné Legnici nav¹tìvoval v letech 1899-1908 gymnázium. V letech 1908-1913 studoval na univerzitì ve Vratislavi (kromì matematiky také fyziku, filozofii, hudbu a lingvistiku) s výjimkou letního semestru roku 1909, kdy byl na univerzitì ve Freiburgu, a letního semestru roku 1910, kdy nav¹tìvoval pøedná¹ky na univerzitì v Göttingen. Jeho uèitelem matematiky na vratislavské univerzitì byl zejména Adolf Kneser, který významným zpùsobem ovlivnil jeho vìdeckou dráhu. Ke konci svého studia nav¹tìvoval Koschmieder pøedná¹ky i na novì zøízené technice ve Vratislavi. 13. února 1913 podal Koschmieder na univerzitì pøihlá¹ku k rigorózní zkou¹ce a pøedlo¾il disertaèní práci s názvem Anwendung der elliptischen Funktionen auf die Bestimmung konjugierter Punkte bei Problemen der Variationsrechnung . Práci zhodnotil Kneser jako velmi dobrou disertaci. Jako hlavní obor rigoróza zvolil Koschmieder matematiku, jako vedlej¹í fyziku a hudební vìdu. Samotná rigorózní zkou¹ka probìhla 7. kvìtna. Doktorem filozofie byl Koschmieder promován 22. øíjna 1913. V zimním semestru roku 1913/14 byl Koschmieder jmenován asistentem matematicko-fyzikálního semináøe na univerzitì ve Vratislavi. Na jaøe roku 1914 vykonal zkou¹ku uèitelské zpùsobilosti a získal oprávnìní k výuce èisté a aplikované matematiky, fyziky a filozofické propedeutiky na støedních ¹kolách. Bìhem první svìtové války slou¾il v letech 1914-18 v armádì. Dva roky byl nejprve vedoucím mnoha vojenských meteorologických stanic v Nìmecku, pak zastával tuto funkci pøímo na frontì v Rumunsku a v posledním roce války v Istanbulu a Dama¹ku. Po válce se 1. prosince 1918 vrátil na své asistentské místo na univerzitì ve Vratislavi.
