As an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in 1913, Oskar Klein invented the idea that extra dimensions may be physically quite real, though smaller than ours, and that they could lead to the observed forces beyond gravity when looked at from our four-dimensional world. (This idea was studied independently by T. Kaluza and is now called Kaluza-Klein theory.) Klein's impact on physics is much broader the Klein-Gordon equation is still used daily, and his name is associated with several additional major accomplishments. Research about critical states is currently a very active field, which is important both scientifically and techologically. The research has implications for most areas of physics, ranging from the early universe to critical fluctuations in superconductors and superfluids (my own area of research), certain models of the brain, hardening of steel, forest fires, etc etc. I will explain what a critical state is thought to be, and discuss some theory, experiments, and simulations. MONDAY November 19 at 16.15 Professor Clyde Martin, Texas Tech University STABILITY AND LIMIT CYCLES IN THE MAMMALIAN BRAIN The portion of the brain that governs circadian rhythm is a small nucleus in the brain stem. In rats the region consists of approximately 16,000 neurons and has very simple structure. The connectivity of the regions is a somewhat controversial subject. A model of this region is developed in terms of a three dimensional network of van der Pol oscillators. We are able to demonstrate analytically by explicitly calculating the eigenvalues of a 32000 by 32000 matrix and using Hopf bifurcation techniques that phase locking occurs even with a very simple and sparse connectivity structure. We are also able to demonstrate that entrainment occurs when the models are stimulated by periodic light signals. Further more we have been able to demonstrate in simulation that the models are hyper robust - 90% of the nodes can be removed and the network retains phase lock and entrainment properties.

Berwald
Ludwig Berwald (1883-1942). Born in Prague. Studied mathematics in Munich and became a full professor at the German Charles University in Prague. His scientific work is mainly in differential geometry, notably on Finsler geometry and on spray geometry, i.e. , path spaces. He died in Poland after having been deported by the German authorities just because he was Jewish.
Bortolotti
Enea Bortolotti (1896-1934). Born in Rome. After a break during the First World War, he received his Ph.D. in 1920 at Pisa; he was particularly influenced by L. Bianchi. After teaching at the medical school, he became professor of geometry at the Univerity of Cagliari in 1928. From there he moved on to the same position at the University of Florence in 1934. Despite his premature death, Bortolotti published about a hundred papers, notably in differential geometry.
Cartan
Elie Joseph Cartan (1869-1951). Born in Dolomien near Chamb©ry, France. Student at l‘‰cole Normale since 1888, he received his Ph.D. in 1894 with a thesis in which he completed Killing’s classification of semisimple algebras. He lectured at Montpellier (1894-1903), Lyon (1896-1903), Nancy (1903-1909), and Paris (1909-1940). His following work on the representation of semisimple Lie groups combines group theory, classical geometry, differential geometry, and topology. From 1904 he worked on differential equations and differential geometry, and developed a theory of moving frames (calculus of differential forms). He also contributed to the geometry of symmetric spaces and published on general relativity and its geometric extensions as well as on the theory of spinors. For his Collected Works, cf.

We will have a meeting to celebrate the work of Oskar Klein. As an assistant professor at the University of Michigan 75 years ago he invented the idea that extra dimensions may be physically quite real, though smaller than ours, and that they could lead to the observed forces beyond gravity when looked at from our four-dimensional world. (This idea was studied independently by T. Kaluza and is now called Kaluza-Klein theory.) Klein's impact on physics is much broader the Klein-Gordon equation is still used daily, and his name is associated with several additional major accomplishments. The speakers will be L. Brink, K. Kaluza-Klein Theory in Perspective
Authors: M. J. Duff
The Kaluza-Klein idea of extra spacetime dimensions continues to pervade current attempts to unify the fundamental forces, but in ways somewhat different from that originally envisaged. We present a modern perspective on the role of internal dimensions in physics, focussing in particular on superstring theory. A novel result is the interpretation of Kaluza-Klein string states as extreme black holes.(Talk delivered at the Oskar Klein Centenary Nobel Symposium, Stockholm, September 19-21, 1994.)

Oskar Klein was was the youngest son of Sweden' s first rabbi, Gottlieb Klein, who was originally from the Southern Carpathian. Gottlieb Klein received his doctorate from Heidelberg and moved to Sweden in 1883. He evidently instilled an interest in learning in his young son, as Oskar became quite fond of biology at an early age. This interest changed to chemistry around the age of 15 and soon after, in 1910, Svante Arrhenius, at what seems to be the behest of Gottlieb, invited Oskar to work in his laboratory at the Nobel Institute. Here he took up an interest in solubility and he published his first paper in 1912 on the solubility of zinc hydroxide in alkalis. This was the very same year that he finished his secondary education. He waited, however, until 1914 to take the University exam. Arrhenius wanted to send Klein to work with Jean-Baptiste Perrin in his laboratory at the University of Paris but the plan was foiled by the outbreak of World War I. Klein found himself caught up in the tempest and saw military service in 1915 and 1916. After his service concluded, but with the war still raging, he returned to work with Arrhenius. Their work now centred around studying dielectric constants of alcohols in various solvents. During this particular stay in Stockholm, he met Hendrik A Kramers, who, at the time (1917), was a student of

edited by G Ekspong (Stockholm Univ.)
The Oskar Klein Memorial Lectures, instituted in 1988 and supported by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences through its Nobel Committee for Physics, are given at Stockholm University in Sweden, where Oskar Klein was professor in Theoretical Physics 1930-1962. Volume 1 contains the 1988 lectures on "Symmetry and Physics" and "From the Bethe-Hulthén Hypothesis to the Yang-Baxter Equation," given by C N Yang , Nobel Prize winner (1957) and professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The 1989 lectures on "Beyond the Standard Models," referring to models for cosmology and elementary particles, and on "Precision Tests of Quantum Mechanics'' were given by Steven Weinberg , Nobel Prize winner (1979) and professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The volume also contains translations of some of Klein's original papers, one on intermediate charged fields (original in French, 1938), another on five-dimensional quantum theory ("Kaluza-Klein theory," original in German, 1926). A scientific biography of Klein, written by Professors I. Fischer-Hjalmars and B Laurent, who both knew Klein well, is included as well as an autobiography by Klein.
