Call for Nominations for the Felix Klein Prize
Principal Guidelines
The prize, established in 1999 by the EMS and the endowing organisation, the Institute for Industrial Mathematics in Kaiserslautern, is awarded to a young scientist or a small group of young scientists (normally under the age of 38) for using sophisticated methods to give an outstanding solution, which meets with the complete satisfaction of industry, to a concrete and difficult industrial problem.
Nomination for the Award
There are no restrictions on eligibility other than those specified in the Principal Guidelines. The prize committee is responsible for solicitation and evaluation of nominations. Nominations may be made by anyone, including members of the prize committee or by candidates themselves. It is the responsibility of the nominator to provide all relevant information to the prize committee, including a resume and documentation of the benefit to industry and the mathematical method used. The nomination for the award should be reported by the prize committee to the EMS president at least three months before the date of the award. The nomination for the award must be accompanied by a written justification and a citation of about 100 words that can be read at the award date. The prize is awarded to a single person or to a small group and cannot be split.

It is awarded to a young scientist or a small group of young scientists (normally under the age of 38) for using sophisticated methods to give an outstanding solution, which meets with the complete satisfaction of industry, to a concrete and difficult industrial problem. The prize is presented every four years at the European Congresses of Mathematics. The prize committee consists of six members appointed by agreement of the EMS and the Institute for Industrial Mathematics in Kaiserslautern. The first prize will be presented at the 3ecm. It carries a monetary award of 5,000 Euro. Attribute-Driven Design Method
The Attribute-Driven Design (ADD) method is a method for designing the software architecture of a product line to ensure that the resulting products have the desired qualities. The ADD method is based on the following:
  • Both functional and quality requirements must be specified. The method insists on an explicit statement of quality requirements. Although these requirements are always present, we have found in practice, they are not always collected explicitly. The ADD method is a recursive decomposition method. At each stage in the decomposition, the elements of the next level decomposition are validated against both the functional and quality requirements. Architectural drivers are the combination of quality, functional, and business requirements that "shape" the architecture. There are usually a small number of requirements that qualify as architectural drivers. They are often (but not always) the most important quality requirements from a business perspective. The identification of architectural drivers enables focusing design attention on achieving a limited number of the most important goals at each stage of the decomposition.

Indra's Pearls: The Vision of Felix Klein
- Book Review, by David Mumford (Author), et al
Book Description

Felix Klein, one of the great nineteenth-century geometers, rediscovered in mathematics an idea from Eastern philosophy: the heaven of Indra contained a net of pearls, each of which was reflected in its neighbour, so that the whole Universe was mirrored in each pearl. Klein studied infinitely repeated reflections and was led to forms with multiple co-existing symmetries. For a century these ideas barely existed outside the imagination of mathematicians. However in the 1980s the authors embarked on the first computer exploration of Klein's vision, and in doing so found many further extraordinary images. Join the authors on the path from basic mathematical ideas to the simple algorithms that create the delicate fractal filigrees, most of which have never appeared in print before. Beginners can follow the step-by-step instructions for writing programs that generate the images. Others can see how the images relate to ideas at the forefront of research.

Why A Felix Klein Prize?
Nowadays, mathematics plays an ever greater role often the decisive role in finding solutions to numerous technical, economical and organizational problems. In order to encourage such solutions and to reward exceptional research in the area of applied mathematics the EMS decided, in October 1999, to establish the Felix Klein Prize. However, in order to bring about change, it was not sufficient for Klein alone to yield up research results. Numerous and diverse scientific measures were necessary to activate the in Germany long-neglected-areas of applied mathematics. Around the turn of the century, Klein succeeded, together with many allies, in bringing about much improved conditions for the development of applied mathematics. Scientists who can prove, in a prominent and commendable way, that mathematical theory and mathematical models lead to practical solutions of problems, and who thereby contribute to and influence the future growth of the mutual stimulation of theory and practice, are following in the footsteps of Felix Klein and are worthy candidates and eligible for the award of the Felix Klein Prize.
Author: Dr. Renate Tobies, Dept. of Mathematics, University of Kaiserslautern, habilitated in the History of Mathematics and has published five books, three of which include material on Felix Klein, and a number of essays.
