Kirkman's Schoolgirls Problem
Proposed by the Reverend Thomas P. Kirkman in 1850 this problem asks if it is possible for a schoolmistress to take her class of 15 girls on a walk arranged in five rows with three girls per row, on seven consecutive days such that no girl will walk with any of her classmates in a triplet more than once? The problem was solved in the same year it was formulated, and leads to the study of Steiner triple systems and more generally combinatorial designs A B C ... "Jones' Fight" by Thomas Kirkman (1845) Col. Dick Jones was decidedly the great man of the village of Summerville. He was colonel of the regiment-he had represented his district in congress-he had been spoken of as candidate for governor-he was at the head of the bar in Hawkins county, Kentucky, and figured otherwise largely in public life. His legal opinion and advice were highly valued by the senior part of the population-his dress and taste were law to the juniors-his easy, affable, and attentive manner charmed all the matrons-his dignified politeness captivated the young ladies-and his suavity and condescension delighted the little boarding-school misses. He possessed a universal smattering of information-his manners were the most popular; extremely friendly and obliging, lively and witty; and, in short, he was a very agreeable companion. Yet truth requires it to be admitted, that Col. Dick Jones was professionally more specious than deep, and that his political advancement was owing to personal partiality more than superior merit-that his taste and dress were of questionable propriety: for instance, he occasionally wore a hunting-shirt white fringed, or a red waistcoat, or a fawn-skin one, or a calico morning gown of a small yellow pattern, and he indulged in other similar vagaries in clothing. And in manners and deportment, there was an air of harmless (true Virginian bred and Kentucky raised) self-conceit and swagger, which, though not to be admired, yet it gave piquancy and individuality to his character.

Memoirs and portraits of one hundred Glasgow men
Notes on the story of James Clark
They span and wove at both Deanston and Catrine, but the cloth was all finished (as it still is) at Catrine. He had read more than most busy men find time or taste for. His specialty was mercantile science, on which he was justly reckoned an authority. He was a leading member of the Chamber of Commerce; and in 1853 the Royal Commission on the Law of Partnership called on him for his views, which, as may be supposed, were against Limited Liability. This fine property, with its picturesque old house and beautiful grounds, he bought in 1851, before which he had lived in West Regent Street. Crossbasket has belonged to several well-known "Glasgow Men." In the beginning of last century it belonged to Dean of Guild Thomas Peter, founder of Peter's mortification "for the sustentation of ane honest, decayed and poor man of the merchant's rank, being a burgess, guild-brother, and inhabitant of the burgh." Charles Mackintosh, Alexander Downie, and John Cabbell were James Clark's immediate predecessors. The "Glasgow Regiment" which James Finlay blew up was a different corps altogether, and has long vanished from the army list. It was known as the "Royal Glasgow Volunteers," its regimental number was the 83rd, and it was disbanded in 1783. A "John Finley," who appears among its subalterns, may have been the piper's elder son, afterwards Major, R, E. This 83rd had no connection with the later 83rd or "Dublin Regiment," now the "Royal Irish Rifles."

BIFA Award Winners, European Film Award Noms, Kirkman Adjusts "Dear Jesse" Compiled by Laura Macdonald, Mark Rabinowitz and Aaron Krach >> 1st Annual BIFAs Announced On Thursday, October 29th, the British indie film clan got together for a victorious night in London's classy Cafe Royal, with Ken Loach ("Ladybird, Ladybird," "Carla's Song") and his Cannes award winning film " My Name is Joe ," picking up four BIFAs, including Best British Independent Film, Best British Director and Best Original Screenplay. Long thought of as one of Britain's best indie filmmakers, but relatively unknown to most filmgoers, Ken Loach professed his ambivalence to awards, but his delight in celebrating British cinema at its ground roots. Gary Oldman's gritty film " Nil by Mouth " picked up three awards, including acting awards for Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke (also the winner at Cannes), as well as for Laila Morse as Best Newcomer.
