THE END OF LAISSEZ-FAIRE
Note
This essay, which was published as a pamphlet by the Hogarth Press in July 1926, was based on the Sidney Ball Lecture given by Keynes at Oxford in November 1924 and a lecture given by him at the University of Berlin in June 1926. The text is worth reading for especially two reasons. First of all, for the wealth of historical information about the origin of the laissez-faire expression and attitudes. Secondly, as clear evidence of the risks of fallacious reasoning that involves anybody who wants to uphold a political position on misrepresentation of reality and of the opposing view. See for instance the passages (Part III) where Keynes compare producers and consumers to giraffes, everybody trying to cut everybody else from the access to the most succulent leaves. This was probably the case of the mercantilist state that Keynes tried to revive but it was certainly not possible during the limited laissez-faire period when industrialization and trade expanded to many parts of the world. John Maynard Keynes
John Maynard Keynes (June 51883 - April 211946), English economist. John Maynard Keynes was a significant and radical economist whose ideas had a major impact on economic and political thought. He is particularly remembered for advocating interventionist government policy, by which the government would use fiscal and monetary measures to aim to mitigate the adverse effects of economics recessions and booms. His ideas have been further developed by the school of Keynesian economics
Life and works
Keynes graduated in mathematics from Cambridge University, and afterwards increasingly turned his attention to economics. An advisor to the British government during World War 1, he first came to public prominence with the publication of The Economic Consequences of the Peace , published after the end of the war in 1919. This argued that the reparations which Germany was forced to pay to the victors in the war were too large and would lead to the ruin of the German economy. These predictions were arguably borne out when the German economy collapsed in the Hyperinflation of 1923, with only a small amount of reparations ever being paid. Keynes also published his Treatise on Probability in 1920, a notable contribution to the philosophical and mathematical underpinnings of probability theory.

John Maynard Keynes
Born 5th. June, 1883, at Cambridge, England; died Easter Sunday, 12th. April, 1946, in Sussex.
Polymath, British economist, pioneer of the theory of full employment, and with many other interests from book collecting to probability theory. His influence on economics was such that the thirty-year boom in Western industrial countries (1945-75) has been called the Age of Keynes. Educated at Eton and King's College Cambridge where he blended effortlessly into the idealistic atmosphere of the "higher sodomy" which attained its most rarefied form in the secret society known as the Cambridge Apostles, to which he was almost immediately elected. In the Apostles he met his lifelong friends Lytton Strachey and Leonard Woolf, and hence became part of the Bloomsbury Group . Believing himself ugly, he was shy in the presence of the undergraduates he admired. However, in 1908 he began a serious affair with the painter Duncan Grant of whom he later said he was the only person in whom he found a truly satisfying combination of beauty and intelligence.

The legacy of John Maynard Keynes
Samuel Brittan: Financial Times 23/11/00
Review of John Maynard Keynes, Fighting for Britain, 1937-1946 , Macmillan £25.00 Although in some ways he anticipated Gordon Brown, Keynes deserves to be remembered for his doctrine of over-saving With his third volume, mostly devoted to the wartime activities of John Maynard Keynes, Lord Skidelsky has come to the end of his monumental biography of the great British economist. The work is illuminating on many different levels: for its contribution to British social and cultural as well as economic history, for its insight into the evolution of economic doctrines, and above all as a fascinating portrait of a unique personality. One of the merits of the third volume is its modesty. There is an epilogue in which events following Keynes death in 1946 and subsequent economic discussion are helpfully summarised; and the author makes a few pertinent comments ambulando. But Skidelsky does not try to impose his own assessment of what Keynes really meant or should have meant. I have to admit that I did not find the details of haggling with the Americans about how to finance World War II, or about the ill-fated US postwar loan from the US that Keynes negotiated at the end of his life, as riveting as the cultural and philosophical material in the first volume or the economic arguments in the second. Others will differ; and the value of these chapters lies in the manifold fresh detail that Skidelsky has unearthed.
