Johannes Kepler was educated in Tuebingen, and he learned the Copernican system from Michael Maestlin, one of the leading astronomers of the day. While he was speculating on the mysteries of the universe in mathematical terms, he obtained a chance to work with Tycho Brahe, then Imperial Mathematician to Rudolph II. Kepler then worked on the problem of the orbit of Mars, based on Tycho's data. He struggled with this problem over five years, and the result is Kepler's (first two) laws of planetary motion (the third law appeared ten years later). Norwood Russell Hanson writes on this discovery as follows: ... he slowly came to suspect that perhaps his predecessors of the previous 2000 years were hasty in thinking the planetary orbits circular. Hindsight makes us underestimate the strength of this ancient maxim; ... But no bolder exercise of imagination was ever required: Kepler dared to 'pull the patters' away from all the astronomical thinking there had ever been. Not even the conceptual upsets of our century of natural science required such a break with the past. ( Patterns of Discovery , p. 74)

Kepler, Johannes
Austrian Astronomer. Kepler proposed the fundamental simplification of the Copernican scheme by hypothesising one ellipse for the orbit of each planet. This achieved a very good fit, and finally put to rest the Platonic scheme of explaining the motions of the heavens in terms of compounds of uniform circular motion. Kepler is famous for three laws, firstly, elliptical orbits for planets, secondly the law that a line from the sun to a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times, and finally that the square of the time a planet takes to complete one orbit is proportional to the cube of its mean distance from the sun. Kepler was the first whole hearted and public advocate of the Copernican system . He is also famous for trying to reproduce the ratios of the orbits of the planets from fitting together the five perfect solids, and the theory that the sun holds the planets in their orbits by magnetism. Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
Johannes Kepler was one of the most important scientist in the field of astronomy. He was the founder of "celestial mechanics", having been the first to explain planetary motion.
In addition to his theories on the structure of the Universe, Kepler made important headway into the field of optics, his publication Stereometrica Doliorum formed the basis of integral calculus, and he also made important advances in geometry. In addition to these major breakthroughs, Kepler also explained how the tides were influenced by the Moon, determined the exact year of Christ's birth, derived Logarithms based on mathematics, with no reference to John Napier's work, and is responsible for finding the three laws of planetary motion. Kepler's first Law: The orbit of a planet about the Sun is an ellipse with the Sun's center of mass at one focus. Kepler's second Law: A line joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time. Kepler's third Law : The squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their semi-major axes.

Introduction to Johannes Kepler
Johannes Kepler was a German scientist who lived from 1571 - 1630. Kepler spent many years studying the geometry of planetary orbits in the hope of finding cosmic perfection. Along with Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler is the founding father of empirical science.

"The heavenly motions... are nothing but a continuous song for several voices,
perceived not by the ear but by the intellect, a figured music
which sets landmarks in the immeasurable flow of time."
John Banville: Kepler , (Minerva 1990)
Kepler's Background
Johannes Kepler His schooldays, though academically successful, were thoroughly miserable. His know-all cleverness irritated his classmates, who frequently beat him up. He considered himself physically repulsive (admitting to 'a dog-like horror of baths'), thoroughly unlikeable, an outsider. He turned to the world of ideas for escape and found solace in an abiding religious conviction.
The Cosmic Mystery O Ancient Greek geometers knew that the number of solids that can be constructed from regular geometric figures is limited to five. They are known variously as the 'perfect', 'Pythagorean' or 'Platonic' solids. Kepler speculated that one of the five solids could be inserted between each concentric planetary sphere. This seemed to explain why there were just six planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) with five intervals separating them, and why the intervals were so irregular. Convinced that he had discovered a subtle geometric relationship between the diameters of the planetary orbits and their distances from the Sun, Kepler wrote
