    Brokering Distributed Mathematical Services
The goal of this project is the development of a framework for brokering mathematical services that are distributed among networked servers. The foundation of this framework is a language for describing the mathematical problems solved by the services.
    Distributed Maple
Distributed Maple is a system for writing parallel programs in the computer algebra system Maple based on a communication and scheduling mechanism implemented in Java.
Integrating Temporal Specifications as Runtime Assertions into Parallel Debugging Tools
This project pursues the integration of formal methods with tools for the debugging of parallel message passing programs. The idea is to generate from temporal logic specifications executable assertions that can be checked in the various states of parallel program execution.

    Kepler, Johannes (1571-1630)
German astronomer, famed for his discovery of the laws of planetary motion. Kepler exemplifies the resistance shown by some of the leading Renaissance scientists (including also Copernicus and Galileo ) to the idea that there might be innumerable inhabited worlds. Having accepted that the Earth and other known planets revolve around the Sun, he was enthusiastic about the possibility of life in other parts of the solar system. However, he was resistant to the notion that the stars might have planetary systems of their own and questioned pluralism on theological grounds: "If there are globes similar to our Earth ... Then how can we be masters of God's handiwork?" His relief upon hearing the details of Galileo's discovery of four satellites of Jupiter are evident in his published response: "If you had discovered any planets revolving around one of the fixed stars, there would now be waiting for me chains and a prison among Bruno 's innumerabilities. I should say, exile to his infinite space." In Kepler's opinion the newly-found moons were made by God for the benefit of the Jovian inhabitants: "Our Moon exists for us on Earth, not for the other globes. Those four little moons exist for Jupiter, not for us. Each planet in turn, together with its occupants, is served by its own satellites. From this line of reasoning we deduce with the highest degree of probability that Jupiter is inhabited."

    Johannes Kepler
The German astronomer Johannes Kepler, b. Dec. 27, 1571, d. Nov. 15, 1630, was the first strong supporter of the heliocentric theory of Copernicus and the discoverer of the three laws of planetary motion. He attended seminaries at Adelberg and Maulbronn before studying theology, philosophy, and mathematics at the University of Tubingen. At Tubingen, Kepler's scientific ability attracted the notice of the astronomer Michael Maestlin. Through Maestlin, Kepler became a supporter of the Copernican theory, although his teacher continued to expound officially the old Ptolemaic system. Kepler had planned to enter religious life, but he accepted a chair in mathematics and astronomy at Graz. At the age of 24, Kepler published Mysterium cosmographicum (Cosmographic Mystery, 1596), in which he defended the Copernican theory and described his ideas on the structure of the planetary system. Influenced by the Pythagoreans, Kepler viewed the universe as being governed by geometric relationships that conform to the inscribed and circumscribed circles of the five regular polygons. Although he was not a Copernican himself, Tycho Brahe, the mathematician at the court of Emperor Rudolph II at Prague, was so impressed with Kepler's work that in 1600 he invited Kepler to come to Prague as his assistant. Confronted with the Catholic persecution of the Protestant minority in Graz, Kepler gladly accepted. When Brahe died the following year, Kepler was appointed his successor and thus inherited Brahe's scientific legacy.

Kepler, Johannes (15711630) The German astronomer, mathematician, and physicist Johannes Kepler was the first scientist to demand physical explanations of celestial phenomena. His three laws of planetary motion, the results of a lifetime of work, changed astronomy and played a crucial role in the development of Newtonian physics and calculus His work helped discredit Ptolemy's geocentric model and helped establish Copernicus's heliocentric theory. Kepler studied at the University of Tübingen (15891594) and was a brilliant student. After graduating, Kepler taught mathematics at Graz. Later, he moved to Prague to assist astronomer Tycho Brahe Kepler succeeded Brahe and in doing so gained access to Brahe's considerable astronomical observations. Kepler began to construct the Rudolphine Tables, which provided highly accurate planetary observations. Kepler used the data on Mars's orbit to determine that the orbit was an ellipse with the sun at one focus. Kepler's first and second laws (elliptical orbits, equality of areas swept out by motions of planets) were published in his book Astronomia n ova New Astronomy Kepler praised the advances made in Galileo's Starry Messenger published a year later.

Kepler, Johannes German mathematician and astronomer. He formulated what are now called Kepler's laws of planetary motion: (1) the orbit of each planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the foci; (2) the radius vector of each planet sweeps out equal areas in equal times; (3) the squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their mean distances from the Sun.
Kepler became assistant to Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe 1600, and succeeded him 1601 as imperial mathematician to Holy Roman Emperor Rudolph II. Kepler observed in 1604 a supernova, the first visible since the one discovered by Brahe 1572. Kepler completed and published the Rudolphine Tables 1627, the first modern astronomical tables, based on Brahe's observations. His analysis of these data led to the discovery of his three laws, the first two of which he published in Astronomia nova 1609 and the third in Harmonices mundi 1619.
Kepler was one of the first advocates of Sun-centred cosmology, as put forward by Copernicus. Kepler's laws are the basis of our understanding of the Solar System, and such scientists as
