The tenth in our series on the wonderful Kempe glass in All Saints. This one is in the north aisle – the central window. Six Saints This window is the latest addition to the church, installed in the year 2000, in memory of Paul Reynolds, who died in 1999. He was Surveyor to the Fabric and was particularly involved in the restoration of the building following the fire of 1985. The window depicts six saints or holy people, five of whom have particular association with the British Isles. Left: (Top) St. Alban. Alban was a Roman citizen of Verulamium (now St. Albans). He carries a sword as a symbol of his death by beheading in about 250 AD., and a martyr’?s palm. He was the first recorded martyr in these isles and this church is in St. Alban’s diocese. (Bottom) St. George. Patron saint of England, George carries a lance as a sign that he was a soldier and he holds a shield on which are the three lions of England. His white vest bears the red cross of St. George. (Compare with the West window) Centre: ( Top) St. Edmund. Edmund was a Saxon king of East Anglia who was martyred by the Danes in 870 AD. He was buried at the now ruined abbey at Bury St. Edmunds. He carries a sceptre to denote his kingship and some arrows

CHARLES EAMER KEMPE WEBPAGE
It has been said that the most famous suffer the greatest reverse of fate. It is certainly true of Charles Eamer Kempe whose distinctive style in stained glass reached the peak of popularity in the late 19th century but for some years has had scant appreciation from modern critics. A notable exception is Owen Chadwick who states in his book ‘The Victorian Church’ that "the art attained its Victorian zenith not with the innovation of William Morris or Edward Burne-Jones but in the Tractarian artist Charles Eamer Kempe". There is scarcely a church in Britain within a radius of thirty miles that does not have a ‘Kempe’ window or some other example of his ecclesiastical furniture. In 1987 it was the 150th Anniversary of his birth and the Kempe Society, formed in his name in 1984, celebrated the occasion with an exhibition which visited the Cathedrals of Durham, Chichester and Southwark and the Church of St Botolphs Aldgate in the City of London and produced an informative leaflet which some of the following information is taken.
Charles Eamer Kempe was born on June 29th. 1837, at Ovingdean Hall, near Brighton, the fifth son and youngest child of Nathaniel Kemp, (Charles preferred the older spelling of his surname later in life) a prominent figure in the county and his young second wife Augusta Caroline, the eligible daughter of Sir John Eamer, city magnate and former Lord Mayor of London. Brought up by a devout mother at the time of the Tractarian revival in the Church of England, Kempe hoped to become a clergyman but, as an undergraduate at Pembroke College, Oxford he realised his severe speech impediment would prevent him from passing on the Christian message by word of mouth. Providence, it would seem acted wisely for although the disappointment was great Charles found some sublimation in developing a latent artistic ability.

Not Slothful in Business: Macleod, Kempe and the Glass of Govan Old Parish Church By Philip N. H. Collins and Adrian Barlow This dramatic presentation of the Govan correspondence was devised by Philip N. H. Collins and written by Adrian Barlow. It was performed ( with illustrative slides ) at the launch event on Saturday 7th July 1990 within the Steven Chapel. Adrian Barlow took the part of the Narrator, Philip Collins the part of Charles Eamer Kempe, and Gilbert Bell used his Scots tongue to give flavour to the Govan 'voices'. All three speakers are members of the Kempe Society. Our connection with the Kempe Society was established by Mr. William Murray, formerly Organist at Govan Old. The correspondence between Kempe and his studio and Dr. John Macleod and Govan Parish has been published by the Kempe Society as 'The Govan Correspondence'. The original letters and accounts are deposited by Govan Old at the Strathclyde Regional Archive, located in the Mitchell Library, Glasgow. Narrator 'Not Slothful in Business', the title of our talk, is part of the inscription to be found on the East window of this Church. This window was installed as a memorial to Dr. John Macleod; and the full text of the inscription, approved by the Kirk Session in March 1899, reads as follows:

Daniel S. Silver Four Colors Suffice: How the Map Problem Was Solved . Robin Wilson. xiv + 262 pp. Princeton University Press. First published by Penguin Books in 2002. $24.95 Progress in mathematics is inevitable: Given enough time, even the most fearsome problem surrenders to some new attack. The fall of Fermat's Last Theorem to Andrew Wiles in the mid-1990s, after battles spanning three and a half centuries, is an example. A less well-known instance is Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken's conquest in 1976 of the Four-Color Problem, the subject of this lively and captivating book by mathematician Robin Wilson. "A student of mine asked me today to give him a reason for a fact which I did not know was a fact—and do not yet," wrote the English mathematician Augustus De Morgan in 1852 to his Irish friend and colleague Sir William Rowan Hamilton. The "fact" is that only four colors are required to color any map in such a way that adjacent regions receive different colors. The student was Frederick Guthrie, but it was Frederick's older brother, Francis, who first proposed it. Francis decided that it must be true after coloring a map of the counties in England, and he allowed Frederick to submit the challenge to De Morgan. "What do you say?" continued De Morgan in his letter to Hamilton. "The more I think of it the more evident it seems."

El que resulta sorprenent és que, com afirmava Guthrie, per complicat que sigui un mapa es pugui pintar amb només quatre colors. El problema consistia en demostrar que quatre colors són suficients per a qualsevol mapa o bé en trobar-ne un que en requereixi cinc o més. La major part de demostracions errònies es basen en el convenciment que el nombre mínim de colors que cal per pintar un mapa és el màxim nombre de regions dos a dos adjacents. Després es prova que en cap mapa no hi pot haver cinc regions tals que cadascuna sigui adjacent a les altres quatre, un resultat que ja era conegut per De Morgan. La conclusió és immediata: quatre colors són suficients per a qualsevol mapa. Malauradament, la hipòtesi de partida és falsa, com prova el mapa de la figura 3. North Chapel - Jesus with teachers These beautiful stained glass windows are mainly the work of Charles Eamer Kempe. Separately, the west window has St. Michael slaying the dragon, while Christ reigns in Majesty in the magnificent east window. The windows were funded by Antony Gibbs of Tyntesfield, together with the chancel, screen, altar and reredos, in 1893/94. The two windows not designed by Kempe are on the south side of the Chancel. These were made by C.E.Tute (l858-1927)., who is thought to have worked for Kempe at one time and adopted his style. NORTH WALL - The Nativity (C. E. Kempe)
The left and middle lights are filled with shepherds clad in cloaks and hoods, one of them carrying a type of musical pipes, standing or kneeling in worship and honour, while Joseph holds a lighted candle taken from the lantern in his hand. On the right the Blessed Virgin wearing a dark robe and white mantle unveils the Divine babe, whilst a vested attendant angel kneels at her side and a celestial choir descends the broad staircase. Labels in any time period tend to fluctuate -we may call the Middle Ages that period of time from the twelfth century to the fifteenth century. An art historian would label these early, high and late Gothic, but for the sake of discussion we will use "Medieval," to encompass both. A large part of the population at this time was illiterate, but that does not mean that they did not love stories like the rest of us. What has survived from that period are the stories, in the forms of the works of Christine de Pisan (1363 - 1431) and Jean Foissart ( c 1330 - c1404). Yet we will see different pictures of the same society from their point of view as we examine their works. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
