Thomson, William (18241907) William Thomson's father James was a mathematician, and William learned about mathematics at a young age from his father. He attended Glasgow University and concentrated his studies in physics, especially heat, electricity, and magnetism. Later he attended Cambridge. Thomson read with great interest Fourier's Analytical Theory of Heat and further studied and used the mathematics of Lagrange and Laplace George Green's work on the mathematical foundations of gravitation, electricity, and magnetism, An Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to Electricity and Magnetism motivated Thomson and focused his research Excited by what he read, Thomson shared Green’s ideas with other scientists and had the book published as a series of journal articles. Building from Green's foundation, Thomson worked with Stokes Rayleigh Maxwell , and others to build the theory of electromagnetism. Later Thomson designed a mirror-galvanometer that was used in the transatlantic communication cable and was knighted for that work in 1866. Thomson was a prolific scientist, having published over 600 papers.

Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin of Largs
Thomson, Sir William, Lord Kelvin of Largs (1824-1907), britischer Mathematiker und Physiker.

"They're a dangerous breed when they go ferral, academics are."
Langdon St. Ives clashes again with Dr. Narbondo, who has murdered the gentleman-scientist's wife and is threatening to use volcanoes to push the earth slightly closer to the path of an approaching comet. This means that the earth's magnetic fields will attract the comet's iron core, thus making collision and the destruction of life on earth certain. The Royal Academy intend to counter this threat by reversing the planet's magnetic poles; this, they believe, will cause a brief period wherein the earth will have no electromagnetic field at all, thus allowing the comet to sail safely by. The great Lord Kelvin is at work on a device to effect this.
St. Ives, meanwhile, is convinced that the Academy's plan will irradiate the earth. He has some save-the-world ideas involving volcanoes (and the hollow-earth theory) himself. This is only the beginning, though. Lord Kelvin's machine has other uses, as a time machine, for instance, and there is unfinished business between St. Ives and the possibly-late Dr. Narbondo.

Thomson was born in Belfast Ireland . His father, Dr. James Thomson, son of a Scots-Irish farmer, had educated himself at Glasgow University while working as a teacher. Appointed head of a school in connection with the Royal Academical Institute, he later obtained the professorship of mathematics in the Institute. In 1832 he was called to the chair of mathematics in the University of Glasgow. William began his course at the same college in his eleventh year, and was noted for his extraordinary speed in solving the problems of his father's class. It was plain that his genius lay in the direction of mathematics; and on finishing at Glasgow he was sent to the higher mathematical school of Peterhouse, Cambridge

By far, the most famous Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow was William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, who held the chair from 1846 (when he was 22) to 1897. He was one of the most distinguished scientists of his age and made a name for himself and for Glasgow University in many areas of physics such as thermodynamics, electricity, navigation and geology. His name has been given to the unit of temperature, the Kelvin He was born in Belfast on 26 June, 1824. His father became a Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow in 1834. This allowed Kelvin to enter the University at the age of ten. He further studied at Cambridge and Paris before returning to Glasgow for his Professorship, which he got with the help of his father, who was still a Maths Professor.
