William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) . Born in Belfast, Ireland, this British physicist began the papers on the laws of conservation and dissipation of energy. He published 661 papers on scientific subjects and patented 70 inventions. Knighted (as Lord Kelvin) by Queen Victoria for his work on the electrical engine, he was in charge of laying the first successful transatlantic cable in 1866. He was educated at the University of Glasgow and Cambridge University.

Thomson was a leading figure in the creation of thermodynamics, he researched problems as diverse as the age of the Earth and the design of the nautical compass, and was intimately involved in the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable. He also corresponded with an array of other important scientists such as George Fitzgerald, Hermann von Helmholtz, James Joule, James Clerk Maxwell and George Gabriel Stokes. Thomson was educated at Glasgow and Cambridge universities, and from 1846 until 1899 was professor of natural philosophy at Glasgow. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1851, knighted in 1866 and elevated to the peerage as Lord Kelvin in 1892. He died at his home near Largs in Ayrshire, Scotland, on 17 December 1907 at the age of 83 after a long and successful life. Family matters From Glasgow to Cambridge Cambridge Mathematical Journal , in which he defended the mathematical rigour of Fourier series against the erroneous criticisms of Philip Kelland, a mathematician at Edinburgh University. During his time as an undergraduate he wrote a further 10 papers and was quickly tipped to be the "senior wrangler" (the student who would come first in the final mathematics examinations).

William Thomson 's father, James Thomson, had originally intended to become a minister of the Presbyterian Church but had opted for an academic career as a mathematician. William's mother died when he was six years old and from that time he was brought up by his father. James Thomson was the professor of engineering in Belfast at the time of William's birth and, when William was eight years old, his father James was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Glasgow. James Thomson was a dominant father who brought his family up in a strict Presbyterian fashion. William's sister wrote of this childhood [4]:- Our father read to us regularly every Sunday morning some chapters in the Old Testament, and in the evening some in the New. However, despite his father being very strict he had a very close relationship with William. It was from his father that William learn mathematics and at a very young age he became an accomplished mathematician with knowledge of the latest developments in the subject.

Lord Kelvin (William Thomson) Click here for full size picture Introduction William Thomson, who was knighted in 1866 and was raised to the peerage in 1892 (as Baron Kelvin of Largs) in recognition of his work in engineering and physics, was foremost among the small group of British scientists who helped to lay the foundations of modern physics. His contributions to science included a major role in the development of the second law of thermodynamics; the absolute temperature scale (measured in kelvins); the dynamical theory of heat; the mathematical analysis of electricity and magnetism, including the basic ideas for the electromagnetic theory of light; the geophysical determination of the age of the Earth; and fundamental work in hydrodynamics. His theoretical work on submarine telegraphy and his inventions for use on submarine cables aided Britain in capturing a preeminent place in world communication during the 19th century. The style and character of Thomson's scientific and engineering work reflected his active personality. While a student at the University of Cambridge, he was awarded silver sculls for winning the university championship in racing single-seater rowing shells. He was an inveterate traveller all of his life, spending much time on the Continent and making several trips to the United States. In later life he commuted between homes in London and Glasgow. Thomson risked his life several times during the laying of the first transatlantic cable. Thomson's worldview was based in part on the belief that all phenomena that caused forcesuch as electricity, magnetism, and heatwere the result of invisible material in motion. This belief placed him in the forefront of those scientists who opposed the view that forces were produced by imponderable fluids. By the end of the century, however, Thomson, having persisted in his belief, found himself in opposition to the positivistic outlook that proved to be a prelude to 20th-century quantum mechanics and relativity. Consistency of worldview eventually placed him counter to the mainstream of science.

    Kelvin Scale
The Kelvin temperature scale (K) was developed by Lord Kelvin Celsius scale . This zero point is considered the lowest possible temperature of anything in the universe. Therefore, the Kelvin scale is also known as the "absolute temperature scale". At the freezing point of water, the temperature of the Kelvin scale reads 273 K. At the boiling point of water, it reads 373 K. Whereas the Kelvin scale is widely used by scientists, the Celsius or Fahrenheit scales
    Kelvin Scale
The Kelvin temperature scale (K) was developed by Lord Kelvin in the mid 1800s. The zero point on this scale is base on the point at which the pressure of all dilute gases mathematically project to zero from the triple point of water (see graph at left). Recall that the triple point is the temperature at which liquid water, ice, and water vapor can coexist simultaneously. Celsius scale . This zero point is considered the lowest possible temperature of anything in the universe. Therefore, the Kelvin scale is also known as the "absolute temperature scale". At the freezing point of water, the temperature of the Kelvin scale reads 273 K. At the boiling point of water, it reads 373 K. Lord Kelvin developed this scale with the help of a Carnot engine. The Carnot engine deals with the relationship between pressure, work, and temperature. The Carnot engine is the most efficient engine possible. However, even it cannot reach 100% efficiency. If an engine was 100% efficient, no energy would be wasted. The Carnot engine is only theoretical, which means that all real engines are even less efficient. To learn more about Carnot engines, go to your local library and look for books on the fundamentals of physics or thermodynamics.
