Lord Kelvin
Lord Kelvin was a British scientist who was born in Belfast, Ireland. He lived from 1824-1907. Lord Kelvin developed a temperature scale that is named after him. Kelvin's work with temperature and pressure systems led to the theory the energy cannot be destroyed, only passed from one form to another.
Lord Kelvin
Lord Kelvin was born as William Thomsen in Belfast, Ireland, in 1824. The absolute scale of temperature (Kelvin scale) is named after him as he was the first to develop its theory. Kelvin's work with Carnot's cycle led to the second law of thermodynamics. This law explains that heat cannot spontaneously pass from one object to another without some form of energy being transformed or lost. Both of these accomplishments lended toward a better understanding of our universe, from how an automobile engine works, to the dynamics of a thunderstorm, to how Earth obtains heat from the sun.

Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in some way when they are heated or cooled. In a mercury or alcohol thermometer the liquid expands as it is heated and contracts when it is cooled, so the length of the liquid column is longer or shorter depending on the temperature. Modern thermometers are calibrated in standard temperature units such as Fahrenheit or Celsius.
Early History
The first thermometers were called thermoscopes and while several inventors invented a version of the thermoscope at the same time, Italian inventor Santorio Santorio was the first inventor to put a numerical scale on the instrument. Galileo Galilei invented a rudimentary water thermometer in 1593 which, for the first time, allowed temperature variations to be measured. In 1714, Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer, the modern thermometer.

Lord Kelvin. (18241907) Titlen Kabel under Atlanten dækkende Teori ogpraksis . William Thomson alias Lord Kelvin var utrolig produktiv.

Lord Kelvin

Lord William Thomson Kelvin
British Physicist "When you can measure what you are speaking about and express it in numbers, you know something about it."
For centuries people have been measuring and marking things. Sometime around 1592 Galileo built the first known temperature- measuring device. It was some 125 years later that Gabriel Fahrenheit finally developed the first accurate temperature- measuring device. By the 18th century there were some 19 different temperature scales in common use. Each was based upon a different standard ranging from the melting point of butter to the coolness of earth in a Paris cellar. Today there are only two thermometer scales in common use; Fahrenheit and Centigrade. The Fahrenheit scale is standard in most english speaking countries. The Centigrade scale (named after the Swedish inventor, Celsius) is used nearly every place else in the world, and will probably become the universal standard in the near future. Lord Kelvin took the whole process one step further with his development of the KELVIN SCALE. The Kelvin scale represents the last word in thermal scales measuring the ultimate extremes of hot and cold. The scale was developed by heating a carbon filament which Kelvin considered to totally light-absorbing. Lord Kelvin observed that the hotter the "black body" (carbon filament) became the bluer the radiated light became, and as the filament cooled down the radiated light became redder. When the filament was heated to 3,200 degrees centigrade (from absolute zero) the (carbon filament) emitted a fairly white light. Thus 3200 degrees Kelvin is considered the "standard" temperature reading for interior white light.

KELVIN IS LORD!!!
ALL PRAISE THE LORD KELVIN!!
Only The One, True Lord KELVIN Can Conserve You From Entropy!
Who Is This Man Called Kelvin?
Who is the Lord Kelvin? Perhaps you have asked yourself this as you have heard others speak of Him. Well, I have good news for you: the Lord Kelvin Loves you and wishes to Conserve you from Entropy . "Now, slow down a minute buddy! I don't quite understand what all THIS means!" You are, no doubt, wanting to say to me. That's OK, for I was once like you and didn't know about the Lord , the one true Lord Kelvin . Let me tell you about our Lord, for He is your Lord as He is mine: the Lord Kelvin chose to come among us as a Man so that He may give us His teachings. He didn't have to , He chose to! He did this because He loves us, for we are His Creation . As is our Universe. The Lord Kelvin created it all. For He is more than just the Man that moved among us, He is the Lord of Our Universe, the Second Wrangler who is also the Senior Wrangler! The Sublime Mystery that is the Lord Kelvin transcends our ability to grasp, but all we need to know is that He LOVES us and wants the best for His Children.

Scottish mathematician and physicist who contributed to many branches of physics. He was known for his self-confidence, and as an undergraduate at Cambridge he thought himself the sure "Senior Wrangler" (the name given to the student who scored highest on the Cambridge mathematical Tripos exam). After taking the exam he asked his servant, "Oh, just run down to the Senate House, will you, and see who is Second Wrangler." The servant returned and informed him, " You, sir!" (Campbell and Higgens, p. 98, 1984). Another example of his hubris is provided by his 1895 statement "heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible" (Australian Institute of Physics), followed by his 1896 statement, "I have not the smallest molecule of faith in aerial navigation other than ballooning...I would not care to be a member of the Aeronautical Society." Kelvin is also known for an address to an assemblage of physicists at the British Association for the advancement of Science in 1900 in which he stated, "There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement." A similar statement is attributed to the American physicist Albert Michelson Kelvin argued that the key issue in the interpretation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics was the explanation of irreversible processes. He noted that if entropy always increased, the universe would eventually reach a state of uniform temperature and maximum entropy from which it would not be possible to extract any work. He called this the Heat Death of the Universe. With
