THE Buddha Dhamma is the religion of religions. Long before Jesus and Mohammed appeared, the Tathagata Buddha preached the religion of Truth to the people of India. The contemporary religious promulgators who preached Religion were Purana Kassapa, Makkahali Gosala, Ajita Kesakambala, Pakuda Katyayana, Sanjaya Belattiputta, and Niganta Nathaputta. Purana Kasyapa specialized in the doctrine of inaction. We quote the words of the translator of the Samannaphala suttanta regarding the teachings of the above-named six teachers as follows: Makkhali Gosala in answer to the King said : There is, King, no cause either ultimate or remote, for the depravity of beings ; they become depraved without reason and without cause. There is no cause, either proximate or remote, for the rectitude of beings ; they become pure without reason and without cause. The attainment of any given condition, of any character, does not depend either on one's own acts, or on the acts of another, or on human effort. There is no such thing as power or energy, or human strength or human vigour. All animals, all creatures, all beings, all souls, are without force and power and energy of their own. They are bent this way and that by their fate, by the necessary conditions of the class to which they belong, by their individual nature : and it is according to their position in one or other of the six classes that they experience ease or pain.

Preface
Many truths lie buried in the dark depth of the past covered over by numerous strata of forgotten events. I propose to dig up one of them, one that would have to combat the history of the primitive ages as it is commonly accepted and also the cherished theories of the scholars of the east and the west, both old and new. What I fear is that the importance of the discovery may fail to attract the attention of the learned world through my own insignificance, utterly unknown to fame as I am. Ten Eminent Disciples of the Buddha

This is a translation from a Chinese book of similar title written by Reverend Xing Yun. The following is only about ten percent of the entire book. There are many other interesting stories in the book. We heard stories about the Buddha, but little did we hear about his 10 eminent disciples. Tonight by recounting and rejoicing in their deeds, we celebrate their merits and contributions in the earliest days of Buddhism.
Sariputra (Also Sariputta, Upatissa, foremost in wisdom)
Sariputra was born to a Brahmin family of great theorists. He displayed great wisdom since a young age. At 20, he left home to seek out great teachers. He became friend with Mogallana. Both of them were so wise that they thought no one could qualify to be their teacher! Later he heard about Buddha's teaching on impermanence and dependent origin , and realized that he had finally found a suitable teacher. Both of them together brought 2 hundred disciples to follow Buddha. Sariputra attained Enlightenment 7 days after following Buddha. He became the chief disciple of Buddha. In the early days, Sariputra was always standing on the right of Buddha while Mogallana on the left. His wisdom was beyond all others except Buddha. He supervised the construction of the first Monastery in Jeta Grove. This construction was plagued with many intellectual challenges from other religions, but Sariputra out debated them all.

Vedas Vedas . Traditional Indian notion regarding Vedas is that, they are considered as revelations from the Almighty to the enlightened ones or Rishis (sages) or compositions by super brains, as a result of their profound contemplation. Thus the term Veda is not limited to a few books and it has got a great role in all Indian traditions. In fact, the whole wisdom of ancient India revolves around the Vedas . Indian tradition strictly adheres to Gurukula Sampradaya that is, handing over of knowledge directly from preceptor (teacher) to disciple (student). Owing to this practice, the ancient Indian mindset, gave little attention to arrange things chronologically. Their acts were guided by principles expressed in the form of slokas , or verses in certain metrical forms Slokam a ["Let noble thoughts come to us from all quarters of this universe" (Rigveda 1/89/1)]. This universality and secular vision in all walks of life makes us difficult to fix a particular time span as the exact period of a particular school thought. Traditional Indian accepts Vedas as apaurusheyam (not man-made), but revealed truths and of eternal validity or relevance.

Although Ananda and the assembly had heard these words, they remained speechless. As they did not awaken to the Teaching, they brought their palms together and waited for the Buddha's further instruction with their minds set on hearing it. (note 1)

Ananda used to lean on the false mind for support. The Buddha, after showing the falseness of the first two aggregates, rupa and vedana taught him to return to the seeing of the mind. The disciple was thrown off balance and, not knowing what to say, was speechless. He was still uncertain and awaited His further preaching.

The Buddha then held up His shining hand, straightened His fingers to give (further) instructions to Ananda and the assembly and asked: "After I attained Enlightenment (Bodhi), I went to Mrgadava park where I told Ajnata-kaundinya and his group of five bhiksus as well as you monks, nuns and devotees, that all living beings failed to realize Enlightenment and became Arhats because they were misled by foreign dust which created delusion and distress (by entering their minds). What at that time caused you to awaken so that you can now win the holy fruit?"
Ajnata-kaundinya then rose from his seat and replied to the Buddha: "I am now a senior in the assembly in which I am the only one who has acquired the art of interpreting because I had awakened to (the meaning of) the expression "foreign dust", so tat I won the (holy) fruit. World Honoured One (foreign dust) is like a guest who stops at an inn where he passes the night or eats something and then packs and continues his journey because he cannot stay longer. As to the host of the inn, he has nowhere to go. My deduction is that one who does not stay is a guest and one who stays is a host. Consequently, a thing is "foreign" when it does not stay. Again, when the sun rises in a clear sky and its light enters (the house) through an opening, the dust is seen to dance in the ray of light whereas the empty space does not move. I deduce that that which is still is the void and that which moves is the dust. Consequently, a thing is "dust" when it moves."

We cannot attempt to write a biography of Katyayana since essentially nothing is known of him except that he was the author of a Sulbasutra which is much later than the Sulbasutras of Baudhayana and Apastamba . It would also be fair to say that Katyayana's Sulbasutra is the least interesting from a mathematical point of view of the three best known Sulbasutras. It adds very little to that of Apastamba written several hundreds of years earlier. We do not know Katyayana's dates accurately enough to even guess at a life span for him, which is why we have given the same approximate birth year as death year. Katyayana was neither a mathematician in the sense that we would understand it today, nor a scribe who simply copied manuscripts like Ahmes . He would certainly have been a man of very considerable learning but probably not interested in mathematics for its own sake, merely interested in using it for religious purposes. Undoubtedly he wrote the Sulbasutra to provide rules for religious rites and to improve and expand on the rules which had been given by his predecessors. Katyayana would have been a priest instructing the people in the ways of conducting the religious rites he describes. Katyayana lived in a period when the religious rites that the Sulbasutras were written to support were becoming less influential. People were turning to other religions and perhaps this lack of vigour in the religion at this time partly explains why several hundreds of years after

Then, the Buddha said to the venerable Purnamaitrayaniputra, "Purna, go to the Licchavi Vimalakirti to inquire about his illness."
Purna replied, "Lord, I am indeed reluctant to go to this good man to inquire about his illness. Why? Lord, I remember one day, when I was teaching the Dharma to some young monks in the great forest, the Licchavi Vimalakirti came there and said to me, 'Reverend Purna, first concentrate yourself, regard the minds of these young bhikshus, and then teach them the Dharma! Do not put rotten food into a jeweled bowl! First understand the inclinations of these monks, and do not confuse priceless sapphires with glass beads!
"'Reverend Purna, without examining the spiritual faculties of living beings, do not presume upon the one-sidedness of their faculties; do not wound those who are without wounds; do not impose a narrow path upon those who aspire to a great path; do not try to pour the great ocean into the hoof-print of an ox; do not try to put Mount Sumeru into a grain of mustard; do not confuse the brilliance of the sun with the light of a glowworm; and do not expose those who admire the roar of a lion to the howl of a jackal!

Prediction
AS ALREADY EXPLAINED, "prediction" means that the Buddha gives us the assurance, "You will surely become buddhas." The term "prediction" (juki) includes three meanings of great importance and subtlety, which it is essential that we understand. The first important point is that Shakyamuni Buddha says not "You are buddhas" but "You will become buddhas." In the sight of the Buddha, all living beings have the buddha-nature, and any one of them can definitely become a buddha. But if the Buddha says merely, "You are buddhas," this statement will be greatly misunderstood by ordinary people. They will be liable to take these words to mean that they are already perfected as buddhas while in a state of illusion, and will have the idea that they can become buddhas without any effort, like riding an escalator.
The prediction given by the Buddha is often compared to an admission permit to a school, and this comparison is quite just. It is not a diploma but only an admission permit. This assurance signifies, "You have passed the entrance examination of the highest university, which leads to the degree of buddhahood. If you study here for some years, you will surely graduate and will become buddhas." Having this assurance, ordinary people must hereafter practice all the more, and must make ever greater efforts to realize this goal.
What a joyful thing it is for ordinary people to have obtained admission to the Buddha's universityto have received the Buddha's prediction, "You will become buddhas." In chapter 3 of the Lotus Sutra, Shariputra was the first
