CONCERT REVIEW
Lucy Kaplansky's emotional spaces
by Seth Rogovoy (NORTH ADAMS, Mass., April 1, 1997) A last-minute change brought Lucy Kaplansky to CC's Cafe at North Adams State College on Saturday night, instead of the originally-slated Sloan Wainwright Band. As a result, those in attendance got the chance to enjoy a rare, intimate evening with this nationally-known singer-songwriter who typically headlines at top listening venues like the Iron Horse in Northampton and the Bottom Line in New York. Kaplansky didn't disappoint, either, bringing with her a fine set of songs from her two albums on Red House Records, "The Tide" and "Flesh and Bone," as well as a few unrecorded numbers. The Chicago native by way of New York City has a knack for writing insinuating melodies that ascend or descend the scale, while underneath bubbles a foundation of resonant, bimodal chords that she picks and plucks percussively on guitar. The contrast between Kaplansky's snakelike melodies sung in a voice that ranged from baby-doll innocence to knowing maturity and her rhythmic guitar-playing created the tension that powered warm, sensual compositions such as "Scorpion," "This Is Mine" and "Edges," which she performed solo on Saturday night. "The Thief," one of her best original compositions most of which are co-written with her partner, Richard Litvin is a beautifully crafted bit of venom, the best putdown song since Bob Dylan's "Positively 4th Street." It is typical of Kaplansky's best work, which features strongly-drawn portraits of emotional spaces full of the sort of deep conviction tempered with ambiguity one might expect from a psychotherapist she is Dr. Kaplansky at her day job.

Historical Note
This committee, formed in January 1980, was charged with planning a project whose initial goals were to identify published works and issue bibliographies as well as to locate unpublished sources and to encourage their preservation and their proper description. In addition It recognized the need for new personal memoirs and oral history interviews. More information on the history of this committee can be found in its minutes. Members were: J. Barkley Rosser (Chairman), Maynard J. Brichford, Churchill Eisenhart, Albert C. Lewis, G. Baley Price, Mina Rees, and Nathan Reingold. Return to the Table of Contents
Scope and Contents
Records of the Committee's work in documenting the history of American mathematics in World War II. The material consists largely of letters from mathematicians active during World War II concerning historically valuable material in their possession, and of reports concerning mathematical research conducted during World War II. Included are letters, minutes, brief memoirs, reports, reprints, photographs, cassette tapes.

Lucy Kaplansky at the Palms Playhouse,

This article was written by John DeFord
Many of you have heard of Lucy Kaplansky. Shawn Colvin and Lucy go back to their days in Greenwich Village in New York City. Shawn produced Lucy's first album, The Tide, and contributes many backing vocals and guitar to the recording. Lucy released a second disc last year, Flesh and Bone. Lucy and her husband, Rick Litvin, wrote most of the songs on this effort and they are very talented writers. Both discs are critically acclaimed and I encourage you all to get these recordings, if you don't have them. Lucy is certainly not a Shawn clone; she is an extremely talented artist in her own right. With that said, if you like Shawn, there is a very strong chance you will connect with Lucy's music, as well. Last weekend, I saw Lucy perform. I actually saw her twice, once on Friday (this review) and again on Sunday evening in Monterey, at Morgan's Coffee and Tea. She seemed very surprised and shocked to see us there when she recognized me. It is something she should get used to, if she gets the recognition her talent deserves. This was another great performance, with a slightly different setlist, and two encores! It was a crazy, 950 mile roadtrip weekend, but well worth it. The venue was interesting, to say the least. The Palms Playhouse is an institution in Davis, which is a college town about twenty five miles from Sacramento. It is a converted barn of undetermined age that has served as a playhouse and music venue for 25 years, capacity is approximately 75, and seating is extremely intimate. I was in the front row, stage left, about two feet from the piano and five feet from the microphone.

Vera Pless 's name before she married was Vera Stepen. Her parents were Jewish Russians who had emigrated to the United States and were keen to make sure that their daughter had all the educational benefits that the United States had to offer. She was brought up in a Jewish area on the west side of Chicago and her parents pushed her to gain educational qualifications as rapidly as possible. When Vera was about 12 years old she was taught calculus by a family friend who was a graduate student at the University of Chicago. He saw that she had a real mathematical talent but Vera was not at this stage interested in mathematics. She played the cello in her High School orchestra and had an ambition to be a top cello player. Certainly she wanted to make first cello in the orchestra but when her father pushed her into leaving high school two years early she had to reluctantly miss out on that pleasure. Entering the University of Chicago, she was awarded a Bachelor's Degree after only three years of study. She still had no burning desire to become a mathematician, although a number of people provided inspiration [1]:-

Lucy Kaplansky crafts folk with incisors
by Charles Wohlforth
October 25 - October 31, 2001 / Vol. 10, Ed. 43
Call The Doctor Lucy Kaplansky crafts folk with incisors By Charles Wohlforth Lucy Kaplansky writes pop songs, too, but they really do aim for a deeper understanding of life. Formerly a clinical psychologist, she has meaningful insights into how and why we behave as we do. As an artist, she attempts to distill that knowledge into three-minute songs about ordinary people. And much of the time, it works. Now, the idea of songs by a psychologist may not sound promising. It may generate even less excitement to hear that Kaplansky writes as many songs about grief, narcissism, addiction, materialism and guilt as she does about love. (Lucy’s father, Irving Kaplansky, a retired University of Chicago mathematics professor, writes songs about his academic specialty, too. She hilariously quoted one of these at an Anchorage concert last year. Here, kindly provided through the daughter, are the first two verses of "That’s Mathematics," sung to the tune of "That’s Entertainment:" Oh the fun when two parallels meet
