In seguito diventò professore all'Ecole Politechnyque di Parigi.

February 04, 2004 Gaston Maurice Julia Yesterday, in honor of his birthday, Google paid homage to Gaston Julia with the following banner image: Julia was a French mathematician who studied the iteration of polynomials and rational functions in the first third of the twentieth century. He is better known in modern times for his contributions to the science of fractal geometry as popularized by Benoit Mandelbrot I was especially struck by this tribute as I've been playing with fractals since around 1990, and in fact, I posted some images created by the venerable fractint as part of my earliest web content. Here are a couple of examples:
I'm currently looking for a good Mac (OS X only, please) fractal generator. So far I'm evaluating Fractal Domains and Easy Fractal and am leaning slightly towards FD though I would prefer a more fractint (select and zoom) like interface. There's no disputing the beauty of the fractals created with this program, though:
Finally, here's a link to an interesting web-based

Julia and Mandelbrot Sets - Theory
1. Julia sets
At first fractals only existed in the mind of very few people. Those people did not know what they have found nor were they able to visualize the results of their essays. For example in 1919 the french mathematican Gaston Julia wrote an essay of several hundred pages which got a price from the French Academy. This great work then was forgotten for about 50 years, but then it was brough to the mind of mankind again by people examining dynamic systems. In todays world people now are able not only to examine dynamic systems but rather to visualize them using computers. If only Gaston Julia would know how it looks what he had discovered... He studied iterative dynamic systems, i.e. a system with where z is a complex number. 'Iterative', because the function f is applied again and again, so he examined the sequence of points z, f(z), f(f(z)), f(f(f(z))), ..., for different initialization values of z. The sequence of those points is called orbit of the initialization value z, or to define it: Definition Orbit of z : Let f be a function. Then the list of successive iterates of a point or number is called the orbit of that point.

Google celebrating Gaston Maurice Julia
Is that a Mandelbrot set on the "G"? That would be a nice present for Julia!
Claudia's post on Halfway down the Danube inspired a twirling gazillion of self-recurrent fractal memories.
My first educated contact with fractals was around 1990 when a friend of mine (Hello Adrian Salic! How is Harvard this time of the year?) borrowed me a copy of Benoit Mandelbrot's The Fractal Geometry of Nature. Romania was fresh out of the revolution and foreign books were slowly-slowly entering the country. Mandelbrot's book was printed in 1982 – to us an eight years old book meant something amazingly fresh.
Back then I had a garage-made clone of ZX Spectrum, and I wrote some software for it to test the algorithms found in the book. The Z80 processor was slow in a hard-to-explain-today kind of way, and the interpreted Basic was even slower. So it used to take six hours or so for a two-color screen of Mandelbrot or Julia set. More than enough for a basketball game.
But back to our heroes. It is strange how

Mandelbrot and Julia sets
(An index may have a content of its own.) Given a function f(x) and a starting value x one can construct a new value x =f(x ). With some persistence, the next value x is obtained by another application of f: x =f(x )=f(f(x )). This is an iterative process that, generally speaking, generates a sequence x , x , ... x k , ..., where x k is the k th iterate obtained by applying the function f to x k times. The sequence is known as an orbit of its starting point x . Gaston Julia (1893-1978) and Pierre Fatou (1878-1929) made a fundamental contribution to the study of iterative processes. Their contribution (Ref [3]), although regarded as a masterpiece, was largely ignored by the mathematical community until a revival in the late 1970s spawned by the discovery of fractals by Benoit Mandelbrot. For a given function f, behavior of an orbit very much depends on the selection of the starting point x . Following is a rough classification of possible behaviors:
  • k
  • =x p so that the sequence repeats itself
  • Chaos k The set of points with chaotic orbits is called the Julia set for a given function f. Until quite recently the study of iterations and Julia sets has been in a prolonged limbo. B.Mandelbrot has the following to say on the development of the theory

    Gaston Julia
Gaston Maurice Julia ) was a French fractal mathematician who devised the formula for the Julia set . His works were popularised by French mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot , and the Julia and Mandelbrot fractals are closely related. Julia was born in February 3 in the Algerian town of Sidi Bel Abbès, at the time under French rule. In his youth, he had an interest in mathematics and music. His studies were interrupted at the age of 20, when France got involved in World War I and he was called to serve in the army. In one operation on a stormy, cold night he had suffered a severe injury and thus lost his nose. After many unsuccessful operations to remedy the situation, he was forced to wear a leather strap around the area where his nose was for the rest of his life. His presence became more known after the war after a 199-page article he wrote was featured in the , a French mathematics journal. The article, titled " Mémoire sur l'itération des fonctions rationnelles " described the iteration of a rational function. The article gained immense popularity among mathematicians and the general population as a whole, and so led to Julia's later receiving of the Grand Prix de l'Académie des Sciences. Despite of his fame, his works were all forgotten until the day Benoit Mandelbrot mentioned them in his works, after which they found fame again, although not as much.

Filed under: Et Cetera He's the answer to my question of yesterday re: why Google's home page featured a fractal-laden logo. This Algerian-French mathematician was born on February 3, 1893 (101 years ago yesterday) in Sidi Bel Abbes, Algeria. He was only 25 when, in 1918, he published his monumental "Memoire sur L'iteration des Fonctions Rationelles," which instantly made him world-famous in the mathematics centers of his day. As a soldier in World War I, Julia had been severely wounded in an attack on the French front designed to celebrate the Kaiser's birthday. He lost his nose, and had to wear a leather strap across his face for the rest of his life.
