Z Jordanus (Jordanis) de Nemore The name given in MSS. of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries to a mathematician who in the Renaissance period was called Jordanus Nemorarius. A number of his works are extant, but nothing is known of his life. It is customary to place him early in the thirteenth century. Emile Chasles, the geometrician, concluded from a study of the "Algorismus Jordani" that its author lived not later than the twelfth century. In the fourteenth century the English Dominican Nicolas Triveth, in a chronicle of his order, attributed the "De ponderibus Jordani" and the "De lineis datis Jordani" to Jordanus Saxo, who, in 1222, succeeded St. Dominic as master general of the Friars Preachers. Since then, the identity of Jordanus Saxo with Jordanus Nemorarius has been accepted by a great many authors; it seems difficult to maintain this opinion, however, as the Dominican superior general never adds de Nemore to his name, and the mathematician never calls himself Saxo. By the end of the 12 century the best mathematics was done in Christian Italy. During this century there was a spate of translations of Arabic works to Latin. Later Example. However European thinkers and intellectuals are beginning to have some influence again. The science The Chinese devise a sign for zero. In 1202 it is introduced to Europe for the first time, where it begins to change the way people do maths. Jordanus Nemorarius writes the book Mechanica which contains a law about the way levers work and a law on the composition of movements. The earliest known description of a wheelbarrow appears as a stained glass window in Chartres Cathedral in France. The alchemist Arnold of Villanova ALMOST discovers carbon monoxide and is the first known person to prepare pure alcohol. The Chinese use bombs to produce shrapnel and damage - until then explosives had only been used to produce fire, light, noise and confusion among the enemy. They also use kites as a way of sending signals behind the enemy lines. In 1270 Witelo publishes his Perspectiva , a book on optics which deals with refraction, reflection and geometrical optics. Perhaps most importantly, Witelo rejects the current idea that rays of light are emitted from the eye.

He is someone who has been the subject of considerable research without any definite conclusions being reached about his life. Perhaps the most significant fact is a very negative one, namely that Jordanus de Nemore's name does not appear in any list of clerics so it is generally assumed that he was a layman. On the positive side we note that Richard de Fournival, who was Chancellor of the Cathedral of Amiens, made a list of works which were desirable for the Cathedral library in 1250 and four works by Jordanus appear. There are two things which research has discovered which are controversial. One is a marginal note written on a manuscript which states:- This is enough to say for the instruction of the students of Toulouse. This was, for quite some time, thought to have been written by Jordanus so proving that he taught at Toulouse. However Thomson, in [14], discounts the manuscript as being written by Jordanus and in this case there is no reason to associate him with Toulouse. The second controversy among scholars regarding Jordanus is whether Jordanus de Nemore and Jordanus de Saxonia are the same person. He wrote several books on arithmetic, algebra, geometry and astronomy. Jordanus also used letters to replace numbers and was able to state general algebraic theorems but this early use of algebraic notation was not used by subsequent writers. In astronomy he used letters to denote the magnitudes of stars (nor unrelated to his use of letters for algebraic notation). He wrote a treatise on mathematical astronomy called Planisphaerium as well as Tractatus de Sphaera. Jordanus visited the Holy Land and, on the return journey, he lost his life at sea.
