WILLIAM JONES
JONES, WILLIAM (1726-1800), English divine, was born at Lowick, in Northamptonshire on the 3oth of July 1726. He was descended from an old Welsh family and one of his progenitors was Colonel John Jones, brother-in-law of Cromwell. He was educated at Charterhouse School, and at University College, Oxford. There a kindred taste for music, as well as a similarity in regard to other points of character, led to his close intimacy with George Home (q.v.), afterwards bishop of Norwich, whom he induced to study Hutchinsonian doctrines. After obtaining his bachelors degree in 1749, Jones held various preferments. In 1777 he obtained the perpetual curacy of Nayland, Suffolk, and on Homes appointment to Norwich became his chaplain, afterwards writing his life. His vicarage became the centre of a High Church coterie, and Jones himself was a link between the non-jurors and the Oxford movement. He could write intelligibly on abstruse topics. He died on the 6th of January 1800. In 1756 Jones published his tractate On the Catholic Doctrine of the Trinity, a statement of the doctrine from the Hutchinsonian point of view, with a succinct and able summary of biblical proofs. This was followed in 1762 by an Essay on the First Principles of Natural Philosophy, in which he maintained the theories of Hutchinson in opposition to those of Sir Isaac Newton, and in 1781 he dealt with the same subject in Physiological Disquisitions. Jones was also the originator of the British Critic (May 793). His collected works, with a life by William Stevens, appeared in 1801, in 12 vols., and were condensed into 6 vols. in 1810. A life of Jones, forming pt. 5 of the Biography of English Divines, was published in 1849.

William Jones (1760-1831)
4th Secretary of the Navy, 19 January 1813 - 1 December 1814
William Jones was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1760. Apprenticed in a shipyard, during the American War of Independence he saw combat in the battles of Trenton and Princeton and later served at sea. In the decades that followed the war he was a successful merchant in Charleston, South Carolina, and in Philadelphia. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1800 and was offered the office of Secretary of the Navy in 1801, but declined and remained in Congress to the end of his term in 1803. With the War of 1812 raging, William Jones became Secretary of the Navy in January 1814. His policies contributed greatly to American success on the Great Lakes and to a strategy of coastal defense and commerce raiding on the high seas. In late 1814, near the end of his term, he made recommendations on the reorganization of the Navy Department. These led to the establishment of the Board of Commissioners system which operated from 1815 until 1842. During much of 1813 and into 1814, Jones also served as acting Secretary of the Treasury and in 1816 was appointed President of the Second Bank of the United States. He returned to commerical pursuits in 1819. William Jones died in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on 6 September 1831.

    JONES, WILLIAM E. (1808-1871). William E. "Fiery" Jones, legislator, lawyer, judge, and Unionist Republican, was born in 1808 in Georgia. Nothing is known of his family or early life, but he edited the Augusta Chronicle and Sentinel and the Constitutionalist qv He served as one of the commissioners who arranged the surrender of San Antonio. Jones and other Texans attending the court session were marched to Perote Prison qv in Mexico, where they arrived on December 22, 1842. In late March 1843, Waddy Thompson, qv United States minister to Mexico, arranged the release of Jones, Samuel A. Maverick, qv and district judge Anderson Hutchinson. qv Jones returned to Texas and represented Gonzales County in the Eighth Congress in 1843-44. He considered running for the vice presidency of the republic in 1844 but chose instead to accept an appointment in February of that year as judge of the fourth district court. Under the Constitution of the Republic of Texas, qv district judges also served as associate justices of the Supreme Court, so Jones held that position as well until annexation. qv In April 1846 Governor James Pinckney Henderson qv continued Jones's career on the bench by appointing him to a six-year term as judge of the Second Judicial District. Jones moved from Gonzales to Guadalupe County in 1845 and lived there until 1851. He was a founder and trustee of Guadalupe College and a trustee of the Guadalupe High School Association. The Census of 1850 reported that he and his twenty-seven-year-old wife, Kezziah, had two young sons, and that he was moderately prosperous, owning nine slaves and $6,800 in real property. Jones moved to Comal County in 1851 and apparently as a consequence of that move resigned his district judgeship. In 1858 the region of Comal County in which Jones lived became part of Blanco County, and the state legislature named him the commissioner to hold the first elections and organize the new county. Jones's county of residence changed again in 1862 when Kendall County was formed in part from Blanco County.

    JONES, WILLIAM GOODRICH (1860-1950). William Goodrich Jones, acclaimed as the "father of Texas forestry," was born in New York on November 11, 1860, the son of John Maxwell and Henrietta (Offenbach) Jones. His father was a merchant, watchmaker, and jeweler of Galveston, Texas, with interests both in the East and abroad, and his mother was the sister of French composer Jacques Offenbach. Because of the looming Civil War, qv During his early years Jones made repeated trips through East Texas, observing the developing lumber industry, qv which followed the penetration of the piney woods by the railroads. In 1898 B. E. Fernow, chief of the United States Bureau of Forestry, made a trip to Texas and asked Jones to make a survey of the region and write a report on the condition and future of forestry in Texas. The resulting document became a blueprint for conservationists in Texas. Jones denounced the haste and waste of the large logging operators and predicted that under current methods the great forest would disappear within twenty-five years. He recommended that the state and federal governments cooperate to regulate a planned-cutting, sustained-yield, systematic reforestation program that would prolong the life of the Texas forest indefinitely. When President Theodore Roosevelt and chief forester Gifford Pinchot called a White House Conference on Conservation, Jones attended as one of the Texas delegates. After this meeting Jones led in organizing a conservation agency for Texas. In 1914 he gathered key lumbermen, conservationists, and public officials together for a meeting in Temple to found the Texas Forestry Association;
