Professor Jones's group is involved in the study of transition metal organometallic compounds for the cleavage of strong carbon-element bonds, with synthesis, structure, and reactivity being integral components of each project. New complexes for carrying out organometallic reactions are developed and the mechanism of the reaction is studied as a means of improving reactivity. NMR spectroscopic studies figure heavily in their work as a probe of organometallic structure. One area that has been developed in the group over the past few years involves complexes that can activate C-H bonds of unreactive aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Through a series of kinetic studies, the relative thermodynamics of arene vs. alkane activation by the 16-electron intermediate [(trispyrazolylborate)Rh(CNR)] has been established. The studies show that alkanes first bind to the metal before undergoing cleavage of their C-H bonds, and that the metal wanders along the hydrocarbon chain before choosing which bond to break.

William Jones
Death Row, Illinois
Art by William Jones
Writings by William Jones William Thomas Jones, the person you are reading about on this webpage is a person, a man, a loving son to a wonderful mother. Just because I'm in prison on death row for a crime I didn't commit don't make me any different than most of you my dear readers. Yes, I'm in a confined area, locked in a cell and watched 24 hours a day, but my life hasn't always been spent like this. I was raised by a single parent, a mother, named Rosie Lee Jones, in the steel mill city of Pittsburg, Pa. The paintings and poems you will read and see on this page are inspired by my life experience in and out of prison. I was born in 1955 in the city of Memphis, Tenn, the tenth child out of eleven. I grew up learning from the streets. I was a high school drop out, I did drugs, I drank alcohol and I also sold drugs. As a teenager, I went to jail a few times for drinking and joy riding in cars that didn't belong to me. I was also arrested for other things in that nature, but I managed to stay out of serious trouble. I was mostly into music back then and I am still into it today. I would hang out with a few of my buddies but I wasn't a criminal by todays' standards. I also kept a small time job. I wasn't a gang banger and I'm still not one. I'm not a violent person I treat all people with the respect I want to be treated with. I think I have a big heart and a deeply sensitive soul. Aithought I'm not well educated, I have a lot of common sense. As I sit here on death row writing this message for the webpage, I realize common sense can't help the hurt that's in my heart when I wake up all alone in this little cell. This type of life is very different from all the experiences I've gone through thIs is hell. The only bright spot is when I get a letter from my friends and love ones.

By universal consent Jones was not an important mathematician. Nevertheless he did publish a number of mathematical works: Synopsis palmariorum mathesios, 1706 (a text for learners that did include fluxions and infinite seriesJones introduced here the symbol pi in its enduring meaning) and a number of papers in the Philosophical Transactions. In 1711 he published Newton's De analysi, one of the early shots in the priority battle, and his possession of Collins' papers was crucial for the Newtonian defense. Jones had completed Introduction to the Mathematicks, which was just commencing publication when he died; it was never published and is lost.
His first book was A New Compendium of the Whole Art of Navigation.

Jones, William (Megasiawa; Black Eagle)
Fox anthropologist Born on March 28, 1871, on the Sauk and Fox Reservation in Indian Territory, William Jones was the product of English-Welsh and Fox marriages. His grandfather, William Washington Jones, went west with Daniel Boone, fought in the Black Hawk War, and while in Iowa married Katiqua, daughter of the Fox chief Washi-ho-wa. Their son, Henry Clay Jones (Bald Eagle), married an English woman named Sarah Penny. She died when William was one year old, and the boy was raised by his grandmother Katiqua on the reservation, to which some of her people had been moved in 1870. Katiqua, of the Eagle clan, refused to speak English in the nine years she raised him. Shortly after 1880, Katiqua died and the boy's father sent him to a Quaker boarding school for Indian children in Wabash, Indiana, where he remained for three years. He then returned to his father's house in Indian Territory and worked as a cowboy. Years later, shortly before his death, Jones recalled his teenage years with deep nostalgia: "I wish the Plains could have remained as they were when I was a 'kid.' . . . Did you ever behold clearer moonlight nights anywhere else? Did you hear the lone cry of the wolf and the yelp of the coyote? I wish you could have seen the long horn and the old-time punchers." In the fall of 1889 he entered Hampton Institute in Virginia; upon his graduation in 1892 he received two prizes for scholarship. Later that year he entered Philips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he excelled in classical studies and began to formulate plans for studying medicine and returning to his people as a physician.

16. The Geddes Mystery - Brian Jones, Spectrum: The True Story Of William Goodwin Ge
The Geddes Mystery is about Queensland pioneer, william Geddes, 'The Lord of Caboolture' and the adventures of his son Goodwin Geddes, whose disappearance in 1877 sparked one of Australia's longest investigations.
http://www.geocities.com/braljo/Geddes.html
The Geddes Mystery tells the true story of Queensland pioneer William Geddes, the 'Lord of Caboolture', and the exploits of his golden boy, Goodwin Geddes - dux of Brisbane Grammar School and one of the finest surveyors in the land. After the disappearance of 21-year-old Goodwin in 1877 darkness engulfed the Geddes family. A life insurance claim added controversy to grief with rumours of fraud and conspiracy. In the search for truth a web of intrigue was spun in almost every colony in Australia and New Zealand, as well as Fiji and San Francisco, involving bungled police operations, political interference and betrayal at Parliament House.
Dubbed 'the Geddes mystery' by the press, it is a story of marginal people whose colourful lives - with champagne races, dances, riding parties and regattas - are etched against a backdrop of the rich and famous: the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, the actress Nellie Stewart, the inventor Louis Brennan, the bushranger Ned Kelly, and politicians Sir Arthur Palmer, Sir Charles Lilley, Sir Henry Ayers and the man who drafted the Australian Constitution, Sir Samuel Walker Griffith.
After discovering a set of documents from the 1870s-1880s, the author Brian Jones now reveals the secrets of the Geddes mystery. By allowing the documents to speak for themselves, he tells the adventurous story of his ancestors and offers a rare glimpse of colonial life in the late 19th century. Jones is the author of Searching for Tony, an account of his brother's disappearance in Queensland in 1982 - 105 years after the mysterious disappearance of his great-grandfather Goodwin Geddes.
