Vaughan Partner, Dechert LLP Selected Definitions of "Hedge Fund" "Hedge fund" is an expression believed to have been first applied in 1949 to a fund managed by Alfred Winslow Jones. Mr. Jones's private investment fund combined both long and short equity positions to "hedge" the portfolio's exposure to movements in the market. Today, hedge funds are no longer defined by a particular strategy and often do not "hedge" in the economic sense. The following is a selection of definitions and descriptions of the term "hedge fund" showing the diversity of views among commentators. "The term 'hedge fund' is commonly used to describe a variety of different types of investment vehicles that share some common characteristics. Although it is not statutorily defined, the term encompasses any pooled investment vehicle that is privately organized, administered by professional money managers, and not widely available to the public." In October 1942, she won an amateur contest at the Apollo Theatre; shortly afterwards, in April 1943, she joined Earl Hines ' big band as second pianist and singer to Hines and Billy Eckstine. Eckstine formed his own bop-oriented big band early in 1944, and Vaughan joined him a few months later, making her first recording with his orchestra on December 31. She left Eckstine after about a year, and thereafter, except for a brief stay in John Kirby's group in winter 1945-6, she worked only as a soloist. Although she began to perform predominantly slow, popular ballads with heavy vibrato to the accompaniment of "easy listening" orchestras, her early associations with bop musicians (especially Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker , with whom she recorded Lover Man in 1945) established her lasting reputation as a jazz singer. This reputation endured in part because of her tendency to treat her voice more as a jazz instrument than as a vehicle for lyrics: she negotiated wide leaps within her full-bodied contralto range, improvised subtle melodic and rhythmic embellishments, and made fluid alterations of timbre from a bell-like clarity to a bluesy growl.

Trevor Vaughan-Jones Trevor was born in Cape Town to a father of Irish descent and a Scottish mother on 23 July 1947. He went to Wynberg Boy's High School. He will always be the first to tell you that he was a rebel in school and after the first term in Matric he walked out never to continue again. In those days, if you had a learning disability you were considered an idiot. (One thing we all know is, that Trevor is not.). He is a firm believer that self-taught is best taught, and this is why he reads a great deal and so has gleaned most of his knowledge. New fangled gimmicks such as the computer and Internet play no part in his life and even less with his hobbies. His interest in minerals started in his early teens. As a Boy Scout, he presented a school boyish collection in order to gain his Naturalist's Badge. Once he had gained his mid twenties and he was able to afford more, he purchased better specimens. He has a broken service with the Transport Dept. or rather the old S.A. Railways - to day it's Metrorail.

Ancestral Family Topic 384 Nicholas Vaughan (c.1685-c.1738) Nicholas Vaughan, in his own words If he could speak to us today, Nicholas Vaughan might describe his life as follows. I was born about 1685 in present-day Prince George County. My father, William Vaughan, died when I was young leaving me 169 acres upon which I paid tax in 1704. My wife, Ann Lewis, and I moved to Hatchers Run south of Petersburg, in Dinwiddie County, in 1719. Our 232-acre tobacco plantation was in Bristol Parish and the births of the youngest 4 of our 7 known children are in the parish register that began in 1720. Our children were later in Amelia County. I was dead by 9 December 1738 when the Amelia County Court appointed Richard Hicks the guardian of Abraham Vaughan, “infant son of Nicholas Vaughan.” Ann was married to Henry Fitz by August 1739 when Hicks sued Ann and Henry Fitz, the administrators of my estate.
