Vaughan Jones
I suppose I've been involved in TEFL in one way or another for all of my working life. I stumbled into it early on in Grenoble, France where I had gone straight after university to seek glory on the rugby field. Sadly, in the early eighties, rugby was still very much an amateur sport so I needed a job to pay for the beer. Through various rugby contacts I got a teaching post at the local Chambre de Commerce and spent two very stimulating years relearning my native tongue through the eyes of my French students. Attracted by the idea of "TEFLing" round the world but worried that I still didn't know much about teaching, I decided to hang up my rugby boots, do the 4-week preparatory certificate at International House, London and try and find a job outside Europe. In 1984-85, I spent a very bizarre year teaching
for a door-to-door sales company called HOLP in Yamagata, deepest Japan. It was like having my own cram school. My "classroom" was the lobby of the Hotel Green Tohoku and I taught students ranging from three-year-old children to a group of local neuro-surgeons. Character-forming stuff...

Vaughan Jones DCNZM DSc FRS FRSNZ Vaughan Jones was born and educated in New Zealand, at St Peter's School (Cambridge), Auckland Grammar School, and the University of Auckland, where he graduated MSc with First Class Honours in 1973. He was awarded a Swiss Government Scholarship and an FWW Rhodes Memorial Scholarship, which enabled him to study for his doctorate at the University of Geneva. In 1979 he was awarded the degree of Docteures Sciences (Mathematique) and the following year the Vacheron Constantin Prize for his doctoral thesis. He spent his first postdoctoral year as ER Hedrick Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and from 1981 worked at the University of Pennsylvania as Assistant and then Associate Professor, before being appointed as Professor of Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley in 1985. During the 1980s his research focussed on von Neumann algebras, and in the course of this work he discovered a new polynomial invariant for knots which led to surprising connections between apparently quite different areas of mathematics. Vaughan Jones was awarded a Fields Medal at the 1990 International Congress in Kyoto (Japan) for his remarkable and beautiful mathematical achievements. The Fields Medal is awarded every four years, and is regarded as the euqivalent of a Nobel Prize. (Some say that Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician and that this is the reason why there is no Nobel Prize for Mathematics.) Vaughan Jones is the only New Zealander ever to have won this prestigious award, and it is believed also that he is the only winner from the Southern Hemisphere.

Adviser
In 1987 I got married to my Spanish girlfriend, completed my Diploma in TEFLA, moved to Madrid and thought, "Now what?!" I was just about to take up a post with the British Council in Kyoto when an opportunity to join Macmillan Madrid as a Sales Rep/Teacher Trainer presented itself. I jumped at the chance and spent the next couple of years careering round Spain in my Fiat Uno, talking to teachers, giving workshops and trying to explain to my publishing colleagues what sort of materials I thought were really needed in the classroom. Gareth Richard Vaughan Jones
Hero of Ukraine
A Man Who Knew Too Much... " That part of the world is a cauldron of conflicting intrigue and one or other interests concerned probably knew that Mr Gareth Jones knew too much of what was going on... He had a passion for finding out what was happening in foreign lands wherever there was trouble, and in pursuit of his investigations he shrank from no risk... I had always been afraid that he would take one risk too many. Nothing escaped his observation, and he allowed no obstacle to turn from his course when he thought that there was some fact, which he could obtain. He had the almost unfailing knack of getting at things that mattered." London Evening Standard , by Former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George , 26th August 1935.

Pulsating in the fragrant air With perfumed flowers everywhere. Resplendent is the red, red rose In carmined, multi-floral pose Each budding tenor giving tongue To hold the rhythm of the song The hollyhocks and fuschias fill The treble and sopranos' trill Each bell created every year To ring in chorus, crystal clear. Begonias themselves appoint A bass profundo counterpoint While red hot pokers, breathing fire Co-ordinate our floral choir. But through the music can be found One perfect, honeyed, solo sound One note which makes the heart rejoice The violet's soft, melodic voice. Railroad History
Located near the site of the train wreck that took the life of the legendary engineer, the Casey Jones Railroad Museum State Park commemorates Jones' life and the story of railroading in Mississippi.
Shortly after midnight on April 30, 1900, the "cannonball" left Memphis, Tennessee with Jonathan Luther "Casey" Jones at the throttle. Trying to make up time in the run from Memphis to Canton, Mississippi, Jones has just run through a stop signal when a freight train came into view crossing the track in front of the "Cannonball. Realizing that a crash was inevitable, Jones ordered his fireman to jump clear just before the "Cannonball" rammed into four cars of the freight train. Jones was killed in the crash. The early 1900s were a period of expansion for the railroad across the country and train wrecks were almost a daily event. The brief account of the crash that appeared in the Memphis Commercial Appeal mentioned the engineer's death, but it was not considered a major news story. The tale of the ill-fated "Cannonball" would have ended on that night in 1900 if not for a friend of Jones' and a popularity of Vaudeville. Wallace Saunders, and African American engine wiper in Water Valley and a friend of Jones was deeply moved by the engineer's death and composed "The Ballad Of Casey Jones" as a tribute to his friend. The song eventually found its way to Vaudeville and with the addition of some fictional verses, became a popular hit. By the end of World War I, dozens of versions of this song had been published and millions of copies of the sheet music were in circulation. Casey Jones had become a legend.
