William Johnson: "Still Life Fruit, Bottles"
William Henry Johnson (1901- 1970) was an African-American artist who was associated with the Harlem Renaissance art movement. Johnson was born in Florence, South Carolina, but as a teenager, went to study at the National Academy of Design in New York. He painted in France from 1926 to 1930. When he returned to the USA, he opened a studio in Harlem. Johnson had his first solo art exhibition in New York in 1941. Johnson's vibrant paintings represent many subjects, ranging from scenes from everyday life to historical commemoratives of African-Americans, like Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, and Matthew Henson. Johnson's "Still Life Fruit, Bottles" was painted in 1938-1939.

The Gray Family

William James Gray (born January 2, 1832) is believed to be the oldest child of Reese Gray, and Martha Jane Pratt. William James, a farmer by occupation, was a veteran of the Civil War, serving as a private, first enlisting in the 9th Battalion, Company D, of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry (Army of Tennessee), but later he transferred to the 37th Georgia Regiment (Infantry), Company G, which was nicknamed the "Elbert County Guard." He married Martha M. Johnson (daughter of Anthony Johnson, and Rebecca Bullard) on September 23, 1860 (in Elbert County, Georgia). The family moved to Franklin County, Georgia during the late 1870's, but, shortly thereafter, William James died, on May 11, 1879. The children of William James Gray, and Martha M. 44. How To Kill Quebec Separatism
Article by journalist and Englishrights activist william johnson.

How to kill Quebec separatism
WILLIAM JOHNSON
It's time to give Quebec separatism the . It can be done. What's needed is the nerve, the vision, the political will. The separatist leaders are now in disarray. Last week's election results in Quebec were the culmination of a bad year for separatism. And yesterday, a personal blow landed on Lucien Bouchard: The editor of the closest thing to a separatist house organ, Michel Venne of Le Devoir, questioned the Premier's commitment to the sacred cause. "If Mr. Bouchard no longer believes in sovereignty, let him say so. . . . Let others take up the cause. As long as he does not commit his government to a process [preparing for sovereignty], no one will believe any more in his incantations. His calls to mobilize will remain a dead letter. And his speeches will only bore us." The RIQ claims not to oppose the PQ, but to help by whipping up public support for secession. But it proposes dropping the PQ's commitment to offering a partnership with Canada in the aftermath of secession. This choice of full independence embarrasses the PQ, whose leaders notably Mr. Bouchard believe that only sovereignty accompanied by a partnership offer can ever be saleable. True believers are convinced that secession can be won by talking it up constantly, by harnessing the government's powers to its promotion, and by funding committed non-governmental groups. But that assumption is naive, and an attempt to implement it could backfire.

WILLIAM “JUDY" JOHNSON
Position: Third Baseman, 1918-1937
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 150 lbs.
B/T: Right, Right
Born: 1899 in Snow Hill, MD
Died: 1989 in Wilmington, DE
Hall of Fame Induction: 1975
The ultimate clutch-hitter, Judy Johnson shamelessly indulged in game-winning hits and rally-killing catches. Johnson was a bashful, quiet performer with an astonishing ability to perform under pressure. He was respected for his intellectual approach to the game, excelling with grace and poise; providing a positive influence on teammates and opponents. Ted Page, a former outfielder for the Crawfords, bragged, "Judy Johnson was the smartest third baseman I ever came across. A scientific ball player, he did everything with grace and poise. You talk about playing third base? Heck, he was better than anybody I saw. And I saw Brooks Robinson, Mike Schmidt and even Pie Traynor. He had a powerful, accurate arm. He could do anything, come in for a ball, cut if off at the line, or range way over toward the shortstop hole. He was really something." In his first pro season of 1918, he played behind Bill Francis at third, hitting a modest .227. Johnson credits John Henry "Pop" Lloyd with his early development. "He's the man I gave the credit to for polishing my skills," Johnson recalled. "He taught me how to play third base and how to protect myself. John taught me more baseball than anyone else." The well-schooled disciple of "Pop" developed into a full-time star leading the Hilldales to their first Eastern Colored League pennant, in 1923, with a .391 average.

David and Jemima Ellsworth. He entered Yale in 1762 but transferred to the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) at the end of his second year. He continued to study theology and received his A.B. degree after 2 years. Soon afterward, however, Ellsworth turned to the law. After 4 years of study, he was admitted to the bar in 1771. The next year Ellsworth married Abigail Wolcott. From a slow start Ellsworth built up a prosperous law practice. His reputation as an able and industrious jurist grew, and in 1777 Ellsworth became Connecticut's state attorney for Hartford County. That same year he was chosen as one of Connecticut's representatives in the Continental Congress. He served on various committees during six annual terms until 1783. Ellsworth was also active in his state's efforts during the Revolution. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Oliver Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut's war expenditures. In 1779 he assumed greater duties as a member of the council of safety, which, with the governor, controlled all military measures for the state.

58. Sir William Johnson- The Early America Review, Fall 1996
The Role of Sir william johnson In the Colonial Development of America and HisInvolvement in the Expansionist Policies of the British Imperial Government.

William Johnson, circa 1751
Sir William Johnson - Indian Superintendent The Role of Sir William Johnson In the Colonial Development of America and His Involvement in the Expansionist Policies of the British Imperial Government. by Paul Redmond Drew
A S THE TITLE STATES, this essay will look closely at Johnson's role in the colonial development of America, and particularly the key concern over westward expansion. This became fundamentally linked with the differing views the British government and the colonial authorities held, over how this expansion should be managed, and in particular the financial cost of such a policy. This led, inexorably it seems, to the wider issues that then escalated into the Revolution and the fight for independence. Although Johnson died before the Revolution actually started, he was a key participant in the events that led up to this break with Britain, and as such the motives and actions of this man can give a picture of how the colonies and Britain viewed the future of America.
T
A
A S WELL AS THIS POLITICAL ROLE Johnson had acquired a military one also. In 1746 he was made 'Colonel of the Forces to be raised out of the Six Nations'. The war with France that had begun in 1743, was concerned with the question of supremacy in North America, and as such naturally involved two of the subjects Johnson was most familiar with. Trade and the situation of the Indians in the area around the Great Lakes, were fundamental to the dispute. The role of the Indian tribes was therefore a vital one in any conflict between the two antagonists. The long standing feud between them meant that the support of the Indians was a key element; for this reason a brief description of the composition of the tribes and how they were disposed to the British would be in order.
